I'm talking about resetting the movie while recording. Start recording from a power on and then reset to clear away any legal stuff and what not. Sword Master wouldn't benefit from this. Bisqwit had it right.

If doing a soft reset were to help speed things along, would an author be allowed to do so in a movie? For example, let's say I wanted to do Bad Dudes (remember, this is a "what if"). The company logo takes about three seconds to get past if I let it run. However, if I reset the game, I can skip straight to the title. FCMs record resets. Would a movie that did this be accepted? If you ask me, I don't think it should be an issue.

Well, now the stairs have been explained. Makes sense then. :P Okay, I watched it some more and two things stood out. You're not going to like these, I'm afraid. :S 1. Are you sure you can't use a ?-?-music config for rescuing the princess? I just tested some things related to this and you can still jump the armidillos. 2. Running down a hill gives you greater horizontal speed. It didn't look like you abused this as much as possible. If it's the fact that your character keeps running off without hit the slope, then it can be corrected by letting go of your walking for a frame before hitting it.

Not bad! I'll watch it a few more times to make sure about something, but for the moment, two things stuck out. 1. The jumps inside the castle and the last level seemed sloppy. Several steps were overshot. 2. You still do some unnecassary backtracking in the last level. <v_v> But this one does look a lot better though. I never expected that strategy on the moon! :P

Personally, I'm not so sure about using the shuriken. From my experiments, I'd guesstimate about 2-5 seconds lost per level, and the bosses go so quickly already I doubt it'd make up for it. If anything I'd sing your way through. Music is 60 units lighter than the umbrella and is just as powerful. It didn't look like you were using the parasol's upward motion to it's fullest extent, so the Lullaby of Doom would work as well thanks to the curve. It would also let you fight some bosses much faster. For example, the ghost ship. Just hover right underneath it and let the sine wave do the rest. The shuriken may be useful for short levels/long bosses, though. Look into that. Certainly not all levels require that much hovering. Some levels, like getting the princess and outside the house, may benefit from using a ?-?-Music configuration. If you want to know how to get above those two armidillos: press A for two frames, let go for one, and hover. Voila, you are above the armidillos and below the cactus. :) Nice comic(s), by the way. I AM A PRETTY LADY! Edit: Oh yeah, faster menus would be a major plus if just for the aesthetics. Edit Zwie: I also suggest starting a topic for this game and posting WIPs every so often so we can critique your progress.

I am quite impressed with this. You've demnsrated an intimate knowledge with the game and kept things very smooth. The way you moved around amongst falling objects, weaving in an out between them, was superb. The planning was excellent, top-notch. I always love it when things are set into action as you go and do something else. In short: Me likes. :P

It would seem Takeru or K2 or whoever it was drew from the same well as the Beattles did when they made the Yellow Sumarine movie when they made this game. In fact, Tapir looks like a Yellow Submarine character art reject. Gotta love the abstract. Now, onto the movie. Not bad! There are some problems, though. For example, you can get to the title screen from the "1992 TAKERU" text. You also decide to give most of your characters a one-letter name, even though you don't need any so you wasted time on meaningless names. You seem to be aware of the jump-down--pits trick, but don't exploit it whever possible. An example is in the beginning of the second to last level when you just walk down the tiers. Plus, in the last two levels, you do some backtracking when a jump or two could have prevented them.

I didn't like it either, but the reason I stop for those two armadillos in cactus-land is because I couldn't squeeze my sprite over the top of them and still avoid the cacti. It was either run through (and I would have survived that hit), or shoot them away and maintain my no-damage status.
I've jumped over them. Requires some frame precise moves, but it's quite easy. Consider starting with the Milk Sea (love the appropriation of Hindu iconography) and go clock wise. The path from the house to the boss is shorter, although from castle to egg may make it longer. So, I'm going to have to vote "No" on this. Some mistakes are just too obvious. Good work though, and great game choice! :P

Any game that let's me play as Astroboy with an alien head that sings its enemies to death is pure, undiluted awesome. Oh, the run? I haven't watched it yet, but as soon as I beat this game, I will!

What I meant was that your current run relies so much on speed scrolls that any current strategy will rely on those to be effective. That battle was 114 frames faster; depending on the speed scroll situation, the total improvement could be greater or less than that. The "max speed" thing was merely an afterthought, and you were correct about that part of that paragraph.

Load your movie... Then reload from the save state you left off on.

The system is already in place on the front page near the center. You can browse by system or view the recommended movies. A while ago, though, there was a system that separated the runs according to their classifications, IE hardest difficulty, two player, etc.

Input -> Joypad Configuration (or Alt+F7) Underneath the picture is an option: Allow Left+Rt/Up+Dn. Check the box.

Go into your video options and make sure "Allow more than 8 sprites per scanline" is checked.

Some emulators disable the abilty to press opposite directions. Check your options.

I was just messing around with the game and noticed something interesting: pressing opposite directions will cause your projectiles to stay in place. It has limited apllications, yes, but it could be useful against some bosses for maximizing the damage dealt with each shot. Something to consider. Edit: In fact, I've put together this movie of the first boss employing this glitch, using your current movie as a basis in order to ensure the exact same conditions. The battle is 114 frames faster (1.9 seconds) than yours as of everything disappearing. Further optmizations could be made to widen the gap: finding the best spot to "plant" the attack, maybe manipulating luck to keep him grounded, etc. It would be much more difficult to apply this technique to future bosses because of health issues (the fourth especially), but it could still be done. Just plant the attack right in front of him. That being said, any improvements made will rely on the speed scrolls. In fact, I believe the speed peaks out after a while (I need to test this), and if this is true, you could grab a scroll before your revert back to normal speed to better maintain it.

If slowdown is a concern, what are you going to do about the 99-lives thing? That surely causes some slow down.

And because the improvements are made right at the end, I have decided to provide this save state so you don't have to watch the whole thing again to see what was changed. It takes you right to the beginning of the secret passage. The improvements start towards the end of the third room. Remember, Open Read Only. Edit: Link no longer works.

I understand that some of the pauses were for luck manipulation, but what about in the Death Mountain network? There's no overworld combat there, so the pauses should have been unnecessary.
