To what degree is the developer console not allowed in HL2? Only to the degree to which use would also disable achievements? I'm sure they wouldn't disallow a run by me, and generally I set my graphics settings and key-binds in the developer console. I don't know what the HL2 community's stance on scripts is either, so I'm not going try to talk about that or actual out-of-game-executable actions like deleting the save from Windows. I think that would draw a pretty clear line though in my mind, and from an outsiders perspective, so again, I have no idea what I'm talking about for some of this, and this is a seeming correlation than a causation. Anything that doesn't disable achievements and is in-game could be considered the line that shouldn't be crossed. That means the community may also accept ACE, as that would likely not disable your ability to get achievements.

Honestly I think the categories for ACE runs on TAS is good. I don't think ACE is too much of an issue with normal speedruns either. While many runners will want to go as fast as possible, a lot also want to actually play the game while speedrunning it. Because of that, there will probably always be at least two categories for normal speedruns. Closing or powering off a game mid-run is a segmented run, but resetting is considered fine for RTA. I don't know why you would have an issue with this as many systems either have a button combination for resetting, or more on more recent consoles you can just use the Home button anyway. Rules could be made by the community as to what is allowed or not. Using in-game things such as menus, dev consoles, graphics settings, etc. should really all be decided on by the community running the game. This seems to be the one you have the biggest issue with. While I don't have any issue with it, I also see why it would be an issue, since you still have people playing the game using these methods, so it is unlikely they will get separate categories. If there are programming bugs that can be exploited to go faster, they will be abused. Generally the worst offenders are not the 100% community preferred way of running though. As for the "romhack" example you made, in that case you are no longer using the same software as everyone else. As long as you are using the same software as everyone else and are just manipulating that software using programming errors, I personally am fine with it. I don't really understand the comparison you are trying to make with this.

I won on my first try. Should I go pro?

I really enjoyed this run. Commentary was great too, though there was a point I think near the big boo fight where two lines overlapped each other, at least on the no mini-map version. It's also unfortunate that Dolphin still doesn't render the Mario painting effect. It's the only really jarring graphical issue I noticed from having played on console. If I could vote, it'd be a yes from me.

I really think your concerns are somewhat unfounded. What is allowed and disallowed, along with the various categories, are determined by the community running the game. These communities are often a diverse bunch with different thoughts and ideas on the games they run. Many times there is a group within the community that finds a certain category boring to play, generally one that either completely breaks the game and makes it more dependent on precise inputs rather than focusing on skillful gameplay, much like how you don't enjoy watching them. They make different categories for the game so that they can have more gameplay focused categories. If there isn't a portion of the community that feels anything in particular is an issue, sure, you won't see anybody trying to run a category that "fixes" it. At that point you have 2 options. 1) Deal with it, or 2) Find support to create a new category, and start running it yourself to make people in that game's community aware of it. You yourself can always actively participate in order to make a difference you want to see happen. It should also be noted that trying to define "Glitchless" is a descent into madness and should probably be avoided. The same would probably also be valid for a theoretical "No Meta" category.
