By Emerald, I meant FireRed, but it doesn't matter. I'm through with the last 2 gyms. Now in the lead by 10-15 seconds. But I still have to teach Earthquake. I don't think Earthquake can OHKO the Dusclops, so all the PP will be consumed in that battle. It puzzles me that none of the ghosts have Levitate, but I won't complain. Finally, I hope that Skarmory does something other than Aerial Ace, and that I can take care of Metagross and Armaldo. Also, I never tested Facade on L55 Pokemon.

To be more specific: http://membres.lycos.fr/bunga/item-stats.html It is rare but not impossible. Something like 1/16 for each mushroom and feather. Also, luck manipulation of course. If there is a positive probability of something happening, you can make it happen (assuming that the probability is not ridiculously small). By the way, welcome to the forum.

Update time. Skarmory can't be OHKOed without an X Attack. However, I can make Skarmory either Sand-Attack or Aerial Ace. For some reason, Sand-Attack messes with my ability to get a critical hit (I thought move misses were determined when the move is selected, but apparently Sand-Attack changes this). So I took the Aerial Ace hit, surviving with 1HP left. Not that it should be an issue, since I should have gotten X Attack in the first place. At first, I thought it would be impossible to get Swellow not to use Aerial Ace, but that's only when Machoke is not close to full health. Now I only hope Steven's Skarmory leads with Spikes. Or Toxic. :D The lead is fluctuating wildly. I do know that Machop evolved to Machoke somewhere already, and Marshtomp in the other run has yet to evolve to Swampert. Regarding Mega Kick, it is a Emerald move tutor move, so Blaziken can't get it without being traded.

Also, I know you can't deathwarp back, so how much time do you lose (Gain?) by biking instead?
You didn't ask regarding my other run. I believe it is slightly faster to bike back to Petalburg instead of using death. I didn't calculate it exactly since I am against deathwarping in this run anyway. Deathwarping only impresses me if you use poison deathwarping outside of battle.

Update time. It turns out that I was 71 seconds behind after Flannery. Fortunately, I saved a whole minute against Norman's gym, which means that the run is only 10 seconds behind! Low Kick is more useful than it seems. It deals more damage to heavier opponents, such that it is able to OHKO Slaking. However, I have decided not to submit this run if and when it is finished. Earlier, I decided not to pick up X Attack from the marts, hoping that it would not matter. That was a big mistake. Even one X Attack saves at least 20 seconds against Archie. OHKOing Golbat makes all the difference. Then again, I never planned this out anyway.

IIRC, the most training against wild pokemon in any TAS was Tilus' Pokemon Blue run, where Squirtle fought 1 wild Ratata to learn Bubble in time for gym #1.
Well, you can train against trainers, which is better in general and is what the Sapphire runs do (and the Pokemon Red run as well).

Only Sableye has lower Special Defense than Defense. And Earthquake is a good bet (though not best). I don't know how accessible Shadow Ball is. Anyway, the run isn't looking good at this point. It's my fault for not planning far ahead. After I switched over to Machop and taught it Rock Tomb, the run was about 25 seconds behind my other run. Then I needed an extra critical hit on Wingull and 2HKOs on Numel and Roselia. Poochyena required a CH, and so did both Carvanha. Finally, Machop can't OHKO Golbat even with the Guts ability active. So this run has already made major concessions. I really need timesavers later on.

I gave serious thought to using Taillow, but realized that Taillow has bad Rock and Steel problems. Support is possible, though. Also Makuhita, but it's Fighting moves aren't the best. Leaving the Guts ability, Numel can get Magnitude and Overheat, but Magnitude isn't as useful in this run as it is in Pokemon Gold. Geodude? Well, the ones in Granite Cave are L8 max, and that's a steep uphill climb at that part of the game. And Geodude isn't designed to use Fire moves, or any Special-typed moves for that matter. Aron is only good at flinching. It lacks power later on. Speaking of flinching, the upgrade to the 3rd-generation games sees Low Kick lose its flinch effect for a weight-dependent power calculation. That's a crying shame. Is it true in general that 3-stage Pokemon have Fading (good) experience and 2-stage Pokemon have Medium Slow (bad) experience? That might come into play.

Almost as fast as a Sonic run. This game is very well-played and entertaining, except for the parts where the player goes in tight circles, which is unfortunate because it's the fastest way. Yes vote.

I've started on an improvement. So far, I am 6 seconds ahead of my previous run after beating Roxanne, with Zigzagoon swapped for Wingull. Plan for this run: - Start with Mudkip - Catch a Wingull or Taillow somewhere along the way to Rustboro. - Don't catch Zigzagoon. - Use Mudkip/Marshtomp through beating Wattson (Mauville) but don't teach Rock Tomb. - Catch a Machop near Fiery Path. Teach it Rock Tomb. - Let Machop get paralyzed on next trainer's Roselia. - Own everyone from then on. Earthquake for ghosts. Don't catch Kyogre. I don't know exactly how I ended up with near-perfect Atk/SpAtk IVs the first time, so I had to use part of the previous run up to when I get Mudkip.

That's a rather specific number. How'd you get there?
It's the time from my Pokemon Yellow submission. It was partly a joke. I do want Sapphire to be faster than the fastest possible Yellow run but lately it appears that it won't happen.

In regard to Bisqwit's post, DOSBox is a perfect example. The fact that there exists a version of DOSBox that can generally play games at proper speed is irrelevant.

Okay, but what if you just want to review your work, or you need to make a new savestate that comes before or long after other savestates? That can get really annoying with a slow emulator.
So be it.

I thought about it for a long time before but decided it was not worth it. Suicune has HM support but has the worst attacking stats of the 3. The others don't have HM support. Also, you have to learn Rock Smash, fight two trainers to release them, then manipulate the one you want into the nearest grassy area, get to it, and get them to show up, and manipulate its DVs.

A far more worthy game to TAS would be Pokemon Red, with the newly discovered save glitch.
Can you convince us that you can actually beat the game? You can say all you want about 6 L100 Charizards having Move 0 with 0 PP with the game going crazy after the first battle. All of that is worthless unless you beat the game. I haven't thought too much about Pokemon Emerald, considering that I'm trying to work on an improvement for Pokemon Sapphire. I hope that by using a new strategy, the run can go under 1:35:11.

Welcome to the forum, S3R14L-X. Everyone on this site tends to be very busy, and TASers are obsessed with making TASes. You'll find out soon enough.

I was going to vote no for the previous submission. Then hero found a new strategy I had hoped for (actually more, since I forgot you could place 4 chips on the 5-way Horn Bet, instead of 1). As such, I will vote yes.

I can't believe you're right. Anyway, I did consider voting for public ratings, but after reading the above, decided to vote for voluntary.

100% moves don't miss, such as Facade. And enemies always use a move to knock you out if they can. I did try to get the second Slaking to use Focus Punch first, but it didn't work. I could have saved Mud-Slap, but decided it would take up too much room.

Thanks. It works now. :) The first post says this:

This version of DosBox redefines the following keys: Shift+1 to Shift+0: Select savestate slot (to type numbers (instead of selecting savestates), you must use the numpad) F1: saves savestate F2: loads savestate F3: frame advance F4: pause/unpause F5: ask & load movie (untested) F6: ask & create movie (untested) F7: toggle movie readonly access F8: close movie F10 + key: Toggle "permanently on" for the selected key F9 + key: Change autofire function for the selected key There is no way to feed these keys directly to the game.
I only see "F5", "F6", ..., not "Shift+F5","Shift+F6", ... By the way, one of the games I'm testing is running unnaturally fast no matter what number for cycles I use. For cycles=100, the loading times are slow but gameplay is fast. Is this supposed to be OK?

Run is 2 seconds shorter thanks to Time/SpaceMage. Also a previous battle was changed slightly. This run is updated from a previous run. To see the changes starting with the last Pokemon of the fourth last battle, start from this savestate: http://www.savefile.com/files/627695 Previous discussion: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5327

Voted yes; looks really clean and there's some entertaining bits too (4444 money at the museum!) While I'm at it though, something did bug me. When swapping out the Quick Claw to Kyogre, you used Item->Take and then gave it by going all the way into the Item menu. Wouldn't it be faster to just select Kyogre and Item->Give?
Thanks. I improved the submission by 2 seconds. Now I'm waiting for submission update. 4444 money? I never noticed that! (Even if I did, I didn't care). Edit: Forget it.

This was from some submission some time ago. I didn't realize though that Super Mario 2 remake was different because of "giant items".

Sure, JXQ is widely considered a "ninja" (does anyone know what "ninja" really means anymore?), but to say JXQ isn't a big fan of the "Ninja" title would be an understatement. JXQ has publicly denounced the usage of "Ninja" titles, and he will do it again here. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5276

Nice that you can skip through the craps scenes. Is it not faster to play craps 3 times first, rather than play roulette twice?

I tested this program under Windows for a while. It seems that F5-F10 don't work. Nothing happens when I press them (no status window change). Only F1-F4 and the savestate slots work. Also, only the "ZXCV..." row has immediate shift-key registration. The other keys (for shift variants) require registering shift one frame before that key.

The border change was for stylistic reasons, like kirbymuncher did. As for the internal battery message, stop the movie and turn on real-time clock.
What I meant is that is there any way to prevent the message from showing up for the purpose of making the movie as short as possible?
Apart from using real-time clock, no. I guess Pokemon games aren't designed to run without the clock, so it just has to complain.

OK, thanks. That explains why Kyogre doesn't destroy Groudon. I somehow thought it was Fire/Ground. I don't know where I got the idea.
