The movie must be as short as possible but we must be able to reach the credits without pressing anything. When Sigma says "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!" for the last time, get rid of it, and stop the run. Just give it to Bisqwit. Edit:

Sigma 2 (Serges): -40, -100 (?)
Sigma 3 (Shouryuken, Agile): -100, (Skipped)
Sigma 4 (Rematches, all at once): +13
Sigma 5 (Level): +50

      Neo Sigma: +44
Wireframe Sigma: +1 (?)

Total: -877 (14.616 seconds)
Disclaimer and notes: I am not infallible, I may have made some mistakes but overall I think they're correct to within 1 frame. Numbers marked with (?) may be subject to a higher degree of error. I skipped measuring Agile getting punched due to difficulty measuring the start point, and I should hope the equal. Some non-playable but time-affecting numbers (such as Flame Stag's supposed death delay if he's in the air when he dies, post-death lag, stage select speed, etc) are not noted. This post is intended to try to separate superior playing from a ROM change.

I totally didn't expect that. "shadow rockman" was cool too against the Magne Hyakulegger miniboss, did that make you invulnerable to his shots or was that just your close proximity to him?
Close proximity. The shadow rockman is a graphic glitch.

It's not possible because otherwise Gator goes down too soon. I'm surprised that parrot14green pulled off the Strike Chain hit without the "Window of opportunity" trick (change weapons just before dropping in).

It wasn't clear the first time. The game must reach the credits without the viewer needing to press anything. So the final texts must be cleared. Submit it to Bisqwit when the end is fixed. Otherwise, good job near the end.

I don't care how much shorter the Japanese text is, because this run is awesome! There were a few spots I was wondering about, but it's definitely better than the published one. The underneath grabbing of overhang corners and the Serges battle is something new and pleased me. However, the one thing that disappointed me was the final minute of play. I'm sure it can be done faster: - It is slower to use shoryuken (昇龍拳) to get closer to Zero, because Sigma doesn't come until you land. - It is better to land X on the left side after hitting Sigma with the 昇龍拳, so that X doesn't have to walk there. - The rules require final dialogs (text) to be cleared so the game goes to the ending automatically. Apart from these issues, my yes vote is pending. Is your username "parrot14gree" or "parrot14green"? Your submission text at least should say something like this:
- Aims for fastest time - Takes damage to save time - Abuses programming errors in the game - Manipulates luck I used Snes9x improvement v9. FractalFusion's run beaten in 39 seconds. Enjoy the movie!

I found out that without the dash boots, jumping from sloped ground gives not only a vertical boost, but also a horizontal boost (also walking down), which on steep slopes saves about 10 frames per jump. It's even worth walking backwards for two frames on steep uphill slopes. It's not worth walking backwards on lesser slopes, although forwards it might save a little time. I missed it once in the intro level but it's only 3 frames and I doubt I could get luck to work out again. Also, I found out that jumping at the beginning of the level without dash boots saves a frame. The opposite is true of the dash boots. Walking off edges is also slower without the dash boots.

I really liked how you got some of the enemies to drop 1ups, was this intentional?
It just happened, so I went with it.

Btw, do you ever plan to finish your 100% run?
Technically, I could branch the any% and 100% runs here (or even later), although you probably won't like it. I didn't get any further in my 100% run than I would in an any% run. I'm not sure if I will pursue the 100% now. Maybe later if I have the time. I will probably go with Boomer Kuwanger next. As DeHackEd already mentioned, defeating the sea serpent takes long without the Storm Tornado, and Boomer Kuwanger takes 3 damage from charged X-Buster.

Chill Penguin done. 367 frames faster than published run. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/2173/Mega%20Man%20X%20%28V1.1%29%20%28U%29.smv Which level should I do next?

Now the only possible improvement is to get {11, 5} within 9 extra frames of manipulation. There's almost 20 000 combinations to test, even though the only meaningful input values for each frame are left/right/idle. I can't do that, so this is my final movie. I hope someone improves it somehow someday. :)
The RNG is that volatile? I didn't know that. Anyway this calls for a disassembly, although technically, with only 20000 combinations, you could use a bot.

I hope the thing I did on Chessmaster doesn't work on this game. Which is: 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Ke7 3. Qxe5#

On higher resolutions, it's fine, but on 800x600, it looks like a mess. And I can't afford to change the resolution.

While I don't think such an idea is impossible, I am surprised that there are such garbage pages on Wikipedia. "The neutrality of this article is disputed" is an understatement.

Even more important, read the Why and How. It appears the submitter did not read this page.

Certainly 160K rerecords is a lot but I believe SprintGod did most of the movie at 6% speed (judging from the submission text of the movie it obsoleted). If anyone could somehow find a way to glitch Sonic into Knuckles' routes, that would be cool.

I got some similar errors in Firefox. Fortunately I don't see them anymore.

I did watch this run and I didn't find it entertaining (though it might be because I have never played this game). A question I ask is this: What is the chance of landing the sceptre on a given tile? Must be pretty small, but how small? The number was not given. To any viewer who has never played the game, the character moves downward for half a second, and ... that's it. Sure it could be published as a concept demo, but publishing the run doesn't give the right impression of the entertainment as a site goal. It seems to say "bizarre runs should be published". Also, the label "shortest TAS ever" is lacking in objective basis now. At the 10s level, people ask "How do you define the 'shortest TAS ever'?" If I complete Chessmaster in 8s, is it the "shortest TAS ever"? If Aqfaq completes Clue in 3s, is it the "shortest TAS ever"? Looking at my own Monopoly submissions, I see that I was correct in cancelling my 0:27 Monopoly run, and indeed my 1:08 concept demo intends to obsolete the published run, giving the title of shortest published TAS to Aqfaq's Dark Castle. Voting no.

Perhaps some may disagree, but I think that the other Monopoly submission (the 0:27 one) should be cancelled. The 0:27 run was made with a few goals in mind: - Fastest input (without using cheat keys, of course) - Trade strategy - Do something unexpected - Manipulate 3 rolls after end of input - Most time between input end and win (CPU(s) bankruptcy) The fastest input goal is obsoleted by something 8 frames faster and half as entertaining. Trade strategy is not as good as forcing the CPU (as in, the CPU makes no critical decisions). Every other goal is obsoleted by this submission. True, the run was very bizarre, but being bizarre is not a criterion for a run to be published.

Not right now. The big problem is highly-dependent system interaction, something that console emulators have no problem with (i.e. they have little to no system interaction). Maybe it's better to post in this thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3341

In a 2 player run in S3&K, Tails can fly Sonic as well. Sandopolis Zone Act 2 comes to mind.

It's Nes, not NES. Nes is a place in the Netherlands.

Try searching for Gameshark codes. The linked article says how to decipher Gameshark codes. Game Genie modifies ROM, so it does not work for your purpose. Edit: In datacrystal.org, there are links inside the game links called RAM maps, and they exist for many NES games.

I actually don't think ChessMaster is pointless, although it probably is from an entertainment perspective. Finding the fastest way to beat a chess player when you know exactly what move they will play next is an interesting computer science problem, somewhat different to an unknown opponent like the traditional chess algorithms. Melissa
It is possible, on the lowest couple of difficulty levels, to go like this: White:Human Black:CPU 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Ke7 (by luck manipulation) 3. Qxe5# I made a movie of it sometime ago.

I think it's kind of funny that 5/6 of the games mentioned first already had attempts at TASes. - Solomon's Key 2 (NES) - SimCity (SNES) - Front Line (NES) - Clue (GEN) - Chessmaster (NES)
Usually, one has to try before figuring out that it's pointless!

hmmmm do you mean save states re-recording functions ? or do you mean, as in porting the whole recording to divx, or other formats ?
We mean save states. Save states are used to undo mistakes. Even if an emulator has savestates, they must be linked to movie recording.

I am planning to bankrupt 4 CPUs, according to a solution that the program found. The solution has a delay of 19K-something, so the run will be longer than this one, by maybe 15 seconds. It is only possible with relax timing. Could I go for 5 CPUs? It's a real stretch, and I doubt I would find any solution (hurry or relax) within 100K. And 100K is a long time to spend.
