One thing that bothers me is that if you start up a movie file with read-only off and load a non-movie savestate, the emulator will not load the savestate but will record from where the attempted load occurred. If there are no quicksaves to save you, the run is wrecked from the very beginning. There is no reason that this should happen. Another reason to save backups.

I haven't worked on this run for a long time.

I do have one question though, why'd you change the control scheme?
I changed the control scheme simply because I like the single-button dash better. Right-right loses a frame and down-jump does not allow dash jumping at the end of the dash.

Why'd you get the charge shot upgrade? It's been a while since I played so I forget if it allowed you to charge your weapon or not (I also forget if it said that in game, I never really did pay attention to the cutscenes.), I don't know if charged specials allows you to kill the boss faster or not.
I am quite inexperienced with this game so I am getting upgrades to see if they save time. If I roll over to hard mode, I would like to see whether getting Zero Final would speed up bosses. For the X-Buster Upgrade, it saves some time on the bosses (spider boss especially).

I don't know if hadoken is worth it, the hadoken does 1 hit KO the cannons on the 2nd Sigma stage boss, other than that, not a whole lot of useage, probably be better off skipping it due to the amount of frames it takes to get to it.
The makers of this game messed up the shotokan. Back in SNES, hadoken/shoryuken would be a one-hit kill on most bosses. Here, you have to charge to the third level just to do 4 damage. Of course I'm not getting it.

Other than that, better than when I attempted it, but that's because I tried to avoid getting damaged, so good job so far.
In this game, X has very short recoil. It's so short that X actually recovers from a spot higher than where he was hit, even without grabbing a wall. The armor reduces the recoil even more, but I don't think it is worth getting the armor.

Knowing that the run is encoded should not affect how the submission is judged. As Bisqwit said before, posting on the forum does not accomplish the purpose. Save it for later, when the run is accepted.

BTW, what about other PC engine games aside from Doom/Quake? Halo, maybe?..
There are level speedruns for Halo and Halo 2 on Xbox: http://highspeedhalo.net/ The Halo 1 legendary level runs are some of the best speedruns on the site. They are recommended for first-time viewers. Favorite level speedrun is Truth and Reconciliation legendary in 16:51. Barring Halo, I really don't have any other favorites. Then again, I don't watch a lot of speedruns.

A palindromic TAS would seem like a neat idea. However, for the purposes of watching, I think the only way to make it interesting would be to dual-encode the movie; one playing the movie forward and the other playing the movie backward from where input ends.

It seems that you don't know what this site is about. Read this page before making more movies. Particularly:

Perfection is not easy. Yes, using the tools makes playing easy ― but we're not just playing here. We're attempting to perfect the games to a godly level of precision, which involves handling the game as if it were The Matrix ― observing every slightest detail to gain control over it in ways that the makers never imagined. We're searching for perfection. To reach that goal, using the features provided by an emulator is irrelevant, as long as the "world" – the game – is unmodified. It's a massive undertaking to produce a good tool-assisted movie. Sure, anyone can undo when they make a mistake ― but who can spot the error that causes 0.1 seconds of delay in the movie? Who can spot and abuse bugs in games to do seemingly unearthly maneuvers?

In real-clock games, VBA v17 reacts differently to some OS dates. It may be that the date you have works, but I know that May 19 works for me. I'm planning out the Kanto route. I heard somewhere that it is faster to get to the Power Plant through Rock Tunnel, rather than from Cerulean City.

Johto beaten. Final time is 2:11: http://www.savefile.com/files/8021314 Remember to set the system back to May 19 and delete the .sav, or use the savestates in the .zip. I ended the movie as if my goal was only to beat Johto, but when I do Kanto I will soft-reset just after the game saves.

OK, I am done Clair's gym and headed toward Victory Road. There are so many things to note so I'll try to say the important things: - I used the Max Ether in the underground entrance in Goldenrod (where you must rescue the director). It turns out that using the Ether in the Tower would have been as effective, but I'm not going back. I did not use any PokeCenters. - It is possible to Escape Rope from the underground Goldenrod. Unfortunately, I did not buy enough Escape Ropes and to correct this would require redoing the entire run from Azalea. Escape Rope would save 20 seconds. - The Rocket Grunts are so weak that it is almost downright boring. They don't use a variety of Pokemon and I spend a lot of time avoiding the use of weaknesses, which is not a sign of entertainment. - I replace Magnitude with Earthquake because Magnitude wastes a second with every use, and it is harder to get high-magnitude criticals compared to Earthquake criticals. - I considered deliberately fainting out of Radio Tower, but threw that idea away. I also used strength on Pokemon instead of letting them self-destruct, which would be marginally slower and not as clean-looking. - I deliberately 2HKO a Pokemon (which I could OHKO otherwise) just to use Rollout. It turned out to be faster and less wasteful of resources. A WIP will come when I beat Johto. Anyway, I plan to do a full run of Johto+Kanto. Any ideas about it? Should I use the A+B+Start+Select reset to skip the hall of fame and Johto credits?

You might have to do luck manipulation before the battle. I haven't had much success luck-manipulating Storm Eagle. Not having walls to drag X down is a bad thing. In the X series, it is rather hard to luck-manipulate. Perhaps this would be a better topic to post in: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=558

Before recording in FCEU, in the box that says "Record From:", make sure it says "Start". That's all there is to it.

Such moments in MMX1+2 run made my friend think that double-speedrunning is possible even without tool-assistance ("you just need to plan your route, nothing superhuman") while I think the opposite.
You must have read my mind. I had tried MMX1+2 and even MMX1+SMW without tool-assistance. In neither case was I able to pass the first levels in both games without dying.

Some people click on the last page of a topic, and thus don't see the first post. But I agree. At least everyone should look at the first post first.

For anyone who was wondering, I finished Chuck's gym (that is, after working for a week on another run). It took me many hours over 3 days to get critical Magnitude 9/10 on Chuck's Poliwrath, but I finally got one. Makes me feel lucky to get critical Magnitude 10 on Miltank so soon. Anyway, Jasmine's Steelix has way too much defense and I can't OHKO it with non-critical Magnitude 10, so I'll do Mahogany Town first. I've seen almost exclusively physical moves being used throughout this whole run. Geodude did have a couple special moves thrown at it, but they missed. :) Does anyone know if I can get L38+ Goldeen or L41+ Seaking before the forced waterfall climb? I don't think so.

Probably not. Better to implement a VBA that accepts input when not focused (so that you can run 2 or more VBAs and enter input simultaneously into each one). Ask Luke how it was done in FCEU. As for the Link Cable feature, I don't know.

I wonder how to interpret those terms of use. 50webs had a similar clause, and shut down the website I was using for FCEU. But FCEU has no copyright violations--it contains nothing made by Nintendo or any other company.
I thought they shut it down because they said that no executables were allowed, and you bypassed the .exe block. Wasn't going to post this, but Bisqwit bumped this topic.

I really had two choices that I considered: one being 'A' and the other '-'. Anything else would need the cursor to be moved out of the way.
I didn't realize start can exit the naming menu. Oh well. It really doesn't matter. If it really mattered, you wouldn't name your trainer "Primo".

What about games where you can't kill the character at the end to lose, but you could hit the pause button to delay the ending indefinitely? Would you have to keep recording until the game finally ignores that pause button?

I think you should have named Charmander with a more meaningful name than just "-". I understand that you wanted a 1-letter name to save time, but I think that instead of "-" you could have used eg. "C" which has more meaning. (After all, it's not unusual to nickname someone after the first letter of his name.)
I followed primorial#soup's lead and named everyone in Pokémon Gold using non-alphabetic characters. Well, almost everyone. I found "-" to be more novel than "A" or "C".

Not without seeing if the Rush Jet zip can be applied anywhere else, and a whole bunch of other tricks.

It is not important to know what "Meh" means. If you want to know, it is here: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Meh Basically, voting Meh means "I don't want to decide whether to vote Yes or No." I recommend not to vote Meh. Better not to vote.

Why should people be offended by the term "lurker"? If people don't want to be called a lurker, they should post meaningful messages in the forum until they aren't called a lurker anymore.

Awesome job, guys. Yes vote. The Cossack 4 Rush Jet zip got me by surprise. After viewing it a second time, it looked like Mega Man zipped through Rush Jet. Looks like it could apply elsewhere.
