An update on the situation. The movie syncs fine when the system date is May 20 or before. The movie desyncs when the system date is May 21 or the week of May 21. These dates are not exclusive, and the case may be different for other users. I tested as follows: May 19, no .sav: Works fine. May 19, .sav: Desyncs at the Totodile naming screen. May 21, no .sav: Desyncs when Mom says "Sunday, is it?" (actually, long before) May 21, .sav: Desyncs after entering the grass, encountering a Sentret. The date in no way hinders my progress, as I make the movie off savestates. My progress so far is Bugsy's gym defeated. I'll edit this post when I get the run up. Edit: Restarted to fix the mistake primorial#soup pointed out, and here's the run up to Bugsy's gym defeated (with savestates): http://www.savefile.com/files/5101207 I rerolled, and got a FCFF L3 Geodude. The F speed and special DV's don't hide the fact that the respective stats are bad. Geodude's lack of speed had me worried for a while, but I hope moves like Rock Throw, Magnitude, and Rollout can make up the difference later on. A Totodile run would be maybe 2-3 minutes faster at this point. I didn't catch Pidgey yet.

Don't worry, Kitsune. You're not alone. My movie, as well as every backup I made, suddenly desynced early on playback. It may be the emulator trying to cope with the date and time.

I did the run syncing without the SRAM because I thought it was better. Now I'm wondering if it is worse. Edit: A temporary workaround is to change the date on your system.

Run the movie with read-only. Then: File -> Load Game -> Load from file... and load beginning.sgm.

http://www.savefile.com/files/8291510 I don't care about wasted time since I like Rapidshare. I just forgot you couldn't download anything from it.

OK, here's the savestate: http://rapidshare.de/files/20989781/beginning.sgm.html (It's not quite at the beginning, but you wouldn't miss anything.)

It's Pokemon Gold now, not Pokemon Silver (Sorry for not making that clear). I am also using v17 VBA. If that's not the problem, then maybe check the settings. 44Hz, Flash 64K save, real-time clock (I thought the movie was responsible for these settings). Delete the .sav before opening VBA to play the movie, or try copying the ROM to a new folder before playing. That's all I can think of. I didn't have any problems.

That is so funny. I don't know how I could have missed that. I actually went up to Union Cave before reading this. I guess that means rolling Geodude's DV's over again. But what do I have to lose? I might get FFFF. :) I also noticed that I had Chikorita use a Tackle and a Growl. At the time, I had trouble manipulating the enemy moves but I noticed later that enemy moves can be luck-manipulated before the last dialog before the battle menu. I'm not exactly sure whether Tackle miss or Growl hit is faster, but I'll try and figure out. I'll also catch Pidgey later. It is best, after getting the Togepi egg, to switch Totodile with the Egg so that the Egg can be deposited right away and Geodude remains at the top. Having Pidgey in the mix slows me down when feeding Totodile HM's. Edit: Rolled FCFF! This is good.

First gym done. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1166/PokeGold.vbm Note: Delete .sav file before opening VBA. If it still doesn't work, copy ROM to new folder and try again. I made a slight change in the first gym strategy and had Geodude take only the experience from the L9 Pidgeotto. As a result, I am about 45 seconds ahead of the previous run. I also spent much time rolling DV's. I had once rolled FFF8, but with one problem. The Geodude was only L2. I kept trying for a high level L3 Geodude, and eventually settled for a FAE2 L3 Geodude. It's a risk I am willing to take, but not too much of a risk, since I get Quick Claw later. I also took a E5FB Totodile. Totodile was fast; in fact, too fast. If Totodile was slow enough to tie speed with Falkner's Pidgey, Rage could be powered up in one less move. I'm not going to try that. Besides, speed would be tied with the previous two Pidgeys as well, if I am correct. Edit: It's not possible to get any closer to the table on first visit to Elm's Lab, since the game controls you there.

Yes, good tool-assisted movies cannot be made by just anyone:

It's a massive undertaking to produce a good tool-assisted movie. Sure, anyone can undo when they make a mistake ― but who can spot the error that causes 0.1 seconds of delay in the movie? Who can spot and abuse bugs in games to do seemingly unearthly maneuvers?
However, I think anyone with patience and determination can make a good movie. As experience goes up, it becomes easier to make good movies, and it demystifies how movies are made on this site. Of course, with enough experience, appreciation goes down too.

Started again, and now I am trying to catch Geodude. Is there a good way of getting a good L3 Geodude to appear? It's hard enough to get any Geodude to appear. By the way, it is not possible to control the character on first entrance to Prof. Elm's lab, so I can't get any closer to the table. Edit: I managed to roll a couple set of DV's for L3 Geodude: D8FE and FB79. It's a hard decision, but which one is better?

On the surface, I don't. However, this is a community that will glitch the game and warp you straight to the final boss (figuratively speaking). Something magical might happen if you mess around with restart sequences (A+B+Start+Select).

Glitching a Gyarados, however, would be nigh impossible in real-time, regardless of skill. The reason is that one needs to be able to walk nearly 100 steps through Mt. Moon (after the battle with the Lass, all the way to the lower level, where Gyarados spawns) without encountering a single random pokémon.
In real-time, I think anybody would settle for jumping into the first ladder (en route to the Mega Punch). Looks more like 30 steps. Still extremely difficult.

Good luck. A 100 CD run would be interesting. I think I mentioned before, but Gigafrost and I noticed that some of the CD's didn't show up. I thought at first it was entering the save screen to work, but your run doesn't do that and it still shows up, so I don't know.

It is relatively easy to beat this game in under an hour if you try hard enough, even in real-time on a console. Someone actually did this in 44:39: http://speeddemosarchive.com/mmx3.html The reason why I had 38:15 was because of tool-assistance.

One important thing to remember is that we are not competing in terms of playing skill, nor do we claim to. Indeed, we use tools to eliminate such human limitations.
Tool-assistance does not make movie-making easier. It is a process of using innovation to make the game as entertaining as possible (usually in the form of speed). Perfection also counts.

This movie is awesome. Voting yes. I smile when I see Lt. Surge's Raichu miss Thunderbolt on Gyarados.

Welcome back. I think there are options to set auto-hold on keys in the key config menu. This is in the Bisqwit-and-Luke version of FCEU. Use frame advance and try to set the keys close to each other.

Pretty good, but I wrote a more general How-To in the same Hex Editing page before. Is there something that should be changed in the page? (i.e. Is it too general? Something in the wrong place?)

Sorry, man. I've had so much to do and I lost interest. Maybe later if nobody picks it up for me.

I did, but it keeps regenerating as the movie's playing! I even deleted it right before that Rattata encounter you weren't supposed to get, and you still got it!
You have to close VBA first, then delete, then try again. I chose this workaround over the previous because it makes life easier for those whose ROMs are fresh off the download. The desync happens if you play it again after watching.

Thanks, primorial#soup. So it allows two degrees of freedom for manipulating critical hits, which is good. I always went with one degree of freedom. I am very busy this week so don't expect anything from me for a while. I'm also working on a secret TAS (some other).

Don't worry about the hacking thing. I was just joking. Is there a main menu of some sort? If so, could you tell me what's on the main menu? So you tried pressing every key on the controller?

If there are capitalized words in the middle of the sentence, then it is German.

SRAM is the ROM savefile. If you use an emulator, it should be visible somewhere.

The problem I am having, is that I just downloading Medievil, and for some reason, it only plays in German or French, not sure which.
You can't tell between German and French? :P Is it a PAL (European) ROM? Most PAL ROMs have English, French, and German selections. If you download a U.S. NTSC ROM, it probably won't bother you about the language. Otherwise, you can fiddle around until you find it. Supposedly it would be in the manual, but you obviously don't have it.

Only if you know how to hack the SRAM. :)
