Run up to just past the empty room in Gravity Beetle's stage: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/474/MegamnX3.smv Currently 61 seconds ahead of nitsuja's run at this point.

Would it be called "uses death as a shortcut" even if it isn't a shortcut? It's just a time saver.

An old favorite of mine. I like the game, but back then I was only able to play 10 demo levels. Is the 100-level version really freeware?

We don't use those 2nd-controller codes because they are intended cheats. They would make the game too easy. More info: http://tasvideos.org/Rules.html#cheat_keys_and_debugging_codes_are_not_allowed_ There are glitches that result from using cheat codes, but that's still using cheat codes.

Could you explain which links don't work? I found that the discussion forum link doesn't work in the Japanese translation, and a few others don't go where they're supposed to.

Why are the first couple worlds the same? The least they could do was change the level map in the worlds that already exist. Otherwise, I don't know how this could be accepted. By the way, they never bothered to put up patches. So, no linking to hacked ROMs. (This includes their homepage) Edit: I created a patch: http://rapidshare.de/files/8793966/s2long.IPS.html You must patch "Sonic2.bin" (not sure if that is the only version).

The glitch is the fact that he's taking damage when the ride armor is destroyed, so that he can move while Vile's hp is generating. Making it possible to hit it on the first possible frame, which does save a minor amount of time.
That, and I was able to "desync" the Ray Splasher from Vile's recovery, meaning I don't have to hit him up close and take damage. I already took damage, though. It's the damage from landing on the ride armor's arm that does the trick.

A neat glitch I found yesterday: http://rapidshare.de/files/8783678/mmx3vilebug.zip.html Could it be used elsewhere?

Really nice run so far. Tell me, how much faster than nitsuja's run is your current run (up to destroying Neon Tiger), FractalFusion? And do you intend to submit it, or is it more like a test run? I think it's more than good enough to get published, if you keep up that quality.
Up to destroying Tunnel Rhino, the run is 1039 frames (~17 seconds) faster than nitsuja's run at that point. My Neon Tiger stage run is 734 frames (~12 seconds) faster. I'm currently in Vile's stage, accessed from Volt Catfish's stage.

I think you can easily program it yourself. It's not that hard. I hope you aren't so serious about your cryptology needs. The reason why no such program exists on the internet is because the code is way too easy to break with modern technology.

Oh, and I seem to lack 1 frame in the Toxic seahorse battle, I even tried to copy your fight, but I couldn't get it too work, any idea why?
Don't hit Toxic Seahorse as soon as possible; hit him 1 or 2 frames after. Otherwise, it might be timing. After the initial hit, you should be able to put 6 Frost Shield into Toxic Seahorse without stunning him. Just so that people will see this, I've played to Toxic Seahorse, so I'll post a new video up to that point. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/419/Mega%20Man%20X%203%20%28U%29.smv And post your progress dammit FractalFusion. :P
How does the Neon Tiger damage thing work? It looks good. By the way, I'm busy as of late so I don't have much to show.

It's a bit late for that, but I wasn't sure whether it would work out (I want to use Tornado Fang to get past a few enemies), and I was hoping that Bit would show up in Volt Catfish's stage. I could have manipulated Bit to not appear in Tunnel Rhino's stage, but I felt that the run looked just as good as it is. I can't believe you did that run in 10 hours. I don't want to reveal much in Tunnel Rhino's stage now, but there is a nice trick that saves a few frames (a few meaning half a second), and it's just as fast not charging up against the miniboss, plus you can actually end up a bit further ahead when the boss is defeated.

Quick Bug Report: Sometimes SNES9X doesn't save a movie file. To reproduce: Open an existing movie file in "Read-Only" mode. Use Shift+8 to enable editting. Load a save state. Record stuff. Stop recording. You should have the original movie, and the changes you made weren't saved.
I found that bug too, but I didn't complain, because I didn't want to bother nitsuja about it, and because I can re-"play movie" and flip the read-only checkbox faster than I can find and press Shift+8 and figure out what happened.

I don't use frame advance. I play with 3% speed or something like that.
That probably explains why. Why not use frame advance? It's much easier, it's much faster, you make much more precise runs, and you use far fewer rerecords.

It turned out the penguin wouldn't co-operate no matter what I did, so I guess I'm starting over from the beginning. :)
I hope you're joking. About starting over. I understand, though. Luck manipulation can be very difficult. The best and most reliable luck manipulator by far is having X slide down a wall, and I use it extensively. Or you can try hitting Chill Penguin a couple frames later and see if it works. But you have to do this before the game determines the boss's next action. By the way, I'm trying to luck-manipulate Tunnel Rhino right now.

What do you mean by the last thing, I don't really don't get it. :/ I believe that I'd wanna have the storm tornardo for the Spark Mandrill miniboss, but if it's faster to kill it with the Buster than to kill Storm eagle with it I'll most certainly do Spark Mandrill second, though I'm not entirely sure of how the miniboss on the Spark Mandrill stage works if you didn't kill Storm eagle before.
After you destroy the second car, X freezes in place and the screen scrolls him to the left. It seems you stayed on the left to get rid of the screen scrolling. It doesn't save any time, so don't try to stay on the left side. If you never thought about that, then forget about it. Just stay away from the left and right boundaries. Without defeating Storm Eagle, the Spark Mandrill stage has a few more sparks moving along the floor, and the miniboss shoots lightning downward, but it's probably not something to worry about.

The hack itself was certainly interesting, and certainly there were many tricks in the game that I never expected. There were parts of the run that weren't very interesting, though, such as autoscrolling levels. Yes, Magic Mario was overpowered in this hack. I'll give this a yes vote, but I'm wondering if the run can be faster by doing the worlds in a different order. The point of the game's world select screen was not to force anyone to go in order. By the way, Dahrkdaiz mentioned that it was possible to put on and take off Kuribo's Shoes, but I could never get it to work. Does it work?

One (very minor) complaint about this run, actually: In Toxic Seahorse's stage, it's possible to kill those two green robot enemies at the start with the X-buster without losing time or even moving any differently than you did. It doesn't save any time but it looks a lot smoother.
I've looked at killing more enemies to be more exciting, but generally, I'm not an enemy killer. I don't kill them if they don't get in the way or cause lag. Anyone can suggest enemies to kill. Otherwise, I might just forget. Yeah, I should have killed those enemies.

Also, a few screens after that, are you sure it's faster to go on the left and climb a bit up that ladder instead of jumping off the right side of it? (I'm guessing it is, but why?)
I looked it over and it seems that your route takes nearly the same time as mine. I didn't test whether jumping from the step on the left (to avoid grabbing the ladder) was faster or not. Your route seemed slower when I looked at it (lose height on a jump, no jumping off flat ground). There are other things I might have missed. At the first ladder in Blizzard Buffalo's stage, I didn't jump off alternating sides. If I did Neon Tiger's stage sooner, I could have hit Bit with Ray Splasher a few frames earlier.

Good job, Graveworm. Now for luck manipulation. Don't wear yourself out! I suggest you go in boss order, but you can do Storm Eagle next if you like. By the way, next time you run the intro stage, forget about trying to get to the left side of the screen to reduce scrolling. It doesn't save any time.

I wonder how much slower my Neon tiger fight in the 46:18 is than nitsuja's in his video, come to think that it doesn't use any small bullets nor luck manipulation. (Edit: It'd seem mine is actually faster.)
Your fight is 176 frames faster.

It'd seem to me that nitsujas video was only an attempt to get rid of the lousy video that was up before his.
Then I must beat it. :) I see a 16-second improvement in the Blast Hornet battle and 10-second improvements in Neon Tiger and Volt Catfish battles.

Here is my run so far with Blizzard Buffalo, Toxic Seahorse, and Bit (in Tunnel Rhino's stage) defeated. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/384/MegamnX3.smv Run is currently 735 frames ahead of nitsuja's run. I will take a slightly different route in this run. After Tunnel Rhino comes Neon Tiger, Volt Catfish, Crush Crawfish, Gravity Beetle, Blast Hornet. The reason is to avoid revisiting Volt Catfish's stage to fight Vile's stage. Besides, Spinning Blade does no more damage than X-Buster, with twice the flashing time. I would liked to have used Parasitic Bomb (Hornet's weapon) on Gravity Beetle, but the dumb ship-and-block scene says otherwise. I'm not sure, but it seems as though nitsuja didn't check any damage charts before battling bosses.

I tried having Vile dash up to me but it jumped away when it got to me.
Try shooting rapidly (not autofire) at it and it might do something different. Then again, it might not. I'm having trouble at this part too. Vile keeps dashing at me at the very start instead of jumping back and firing a shot. I might have to redo the car sequence.

And I don't get what you mean with the last point. :/
Shortly after the music ends on the boss intro screen, you can press start (or B or Y) to fade screen. If you don't, the screen doesn't fade for another 2 seconds. Believe me, I made that mistake before, and all throughout my test run.

I had the same mindset, only improving on other's runs. But it's nice to add some new runs, right?

Amazing work. Yes vote from me. One thing that caught my eye was the lag in Bright Man's stage, but that's probably unavoidable. I hope you guys work on more TAS together. :)

Try jumping one frame before firing. Basically, the input should look like this. (when you regain control) Frame x: B > Frame x+1: BY > Frame x+2: (B) > (and so on) It works for me, so it should work for you. If you still can't get it to work, I'll try to make it work. Sometimes, the timing is different for no apparent reason.
