I don't think there are that many bosses that can be skipped in this manner... only the ones where you need to walk past them into another room to continue, right? I'd rather see the game done with all known timesavers. It might be nice to see a second run with the bosses in. Maybe something that includes some of the endgame sidequests, like a "beats all bosses" goal, a non-vaguely defined "100%" goal... or something of the sort.

You know you watch too many TASes when you're watching a beautiful sunset... trying to observe the exact frame when the last pixel of the sun goes below the horizon.

This was pretty cool. The map moving was only annoying at the very beginning. Actually, I think the run sort of kept getting better as it went along. Area 12 was awesome. Grappling into the ceiling in the crowded hallway was cool, and it had that cool BGM from HnF. I really liked this run. I'd also like to encourage you to continue your Bionic Commando rampage with GBC Elite Forces.

I'm not familiar with the game at all... I expected it to be more like James Bond with a fish motif than something sort of like McKids with a James Bond motif. Towards the beginning I was trying to understand why he ran so fast yet jumped so slowly. Later, you used jumping on a downward slope to accelerate forward very quickly. I really don't understand how the jumping speed works, but things generally seemed quicker later in the run. Entertainment was also highly variant. Some of the levels were really cool, especially the (few) boss fights and the really quick levels like "Slippery Slopes"... but a lot of it was boring, generic run-to-the-right kind of stuff. I'm between a weak yes and a meh. I think I'll watch it again when I'm more well-rested.

Dear Bisqwit, In your opinion, which rerecording emulator (any console) is the easiest for someone new to TASing to use effectively?

There's a plot event that takes you to the last area. I'm pretty sure it can only happen once.

I went through yesterday and made a list of screenshots that I thought could be improved. I don't necessarily have suggestions for each because I wasn't watching the movies at the time, but I recall these runs being relatively interesting and the screenshots are pretty boring. In some cases it might just be that I'm missing whatever trick/shortcut/injoke makes them clever. EDIT: Edited in suggestions for Final Fantasy Adventure. I'll continue if it's helpful. EDIT: Removed the ones that were updated and put in a couple more suggestions. EDIT AGAIN: Most of those ones I suggested above were changed in November 2007, and I'm just adding this in because otherwise this post would be a confusing relic.

I wonder if dave_dfwm's idea of using a lower-power rocket would save time overall due to lag. I guess they saved a good amount of time (and effort) against that one boss though. Are you planning to continue working on your run of this game, dave?

I liked watching this, and I've never played the game. The movement speed didn't bother me. I liked the variety of forms/attacks that were used and the boss battles were really slick. I guess an improvement is being prepared now, huh? I'll just wait for that.

Although I really like this game, that's the first WIP I watched. Very fun stuff. I wondered from the beginning if taking Gort would pay off and it looks like it did. It's too bad you couldn't have made use of any centaurs who die for magic item use, but they're unquestionably useless in the Dragonia region outside battles and a few other places. The character choice seems great. I'm looking forward to see if Musashi comes in handy in the last few battles. The quality of the run seems to improve throughout... it looks like you gradually pay more attention to having your characters close together so the cursor doesn't have to move as far. I wonder if for some of the longer battles it might even be worth moving the characters who do nothing closer to the front because the cursor has to move so far each time their turn comes. Couldn't it save some time if they were sitting there for 5+ turns? I don't think the run is perfect but the strategies themselves are very cool. Good work.

Voting yes. It was a big improvement, and even made a very simplistic game fairly fun to watch. I am strongly in favor of your choice of goals. If I had one minor complaint it would be that the paddle/ship/player/thing moves occasionally when no balls are nearby or approaching - it looks as if the game is controlled by a normal player who is unsure of his immediate movements.

Yeah... as indicated in my post, I don't really consider that a problem. Heck, even the author of the movie didn't seem to mind. He knew it was unoptimized. Besides, it's not a democratic vote, it's an opinion poll. And there are more factors to consider than the popular answer to one question (or several), otherwise there wouldn't really be a need for judges.

I kind of like giving my input even knowing that it's not a democracy. I'm sure in some cases it's helpful. With that recent Turok: Dinosaur Hunter submission by nfq, I voted yes on the current question because I did find it entertaining. Then in my post with my comment, I noted that if the question were, "do I think this movie should be published", I would vote no because I didn't think it was up to the site's standards of quality. Before reading through the posts here my suggestion was going to be that it would be nice to have two questions for submissions: "in your opinion, is this movie worthy of being published?" alongisde "did you find this movie entertaining?". I find frequently that when I watch a new submission I have different answers to these two questions, and that both would be relevant to a judge's gauging of the audience's response. Having read other people's suggestions, using the rating system would probably have the same result and be easier to implement.

Dear Bisqwit, I don't post frequently but I watch and rate a lot of movies. I haven't ever spent much time trying to create any TAS works myself. I'm also not very familiar with a lot of the games which I assign these ratings to. How do you feel about users rating movies who aren't strongly familiar with TAS techniques? How about those who rate movies without being very familiar with the games? Are these groups generally using the rating feature as you intended?

Ah, WoW. The anti-TAS. Glad to hear you're back on this one, Bablo. As far as I know I was using a good dump when I watched the WIPs. That was a long time ago though.

Good improvement, and voting yes. Y'know, I remember playing and loving this game when I was 10 or so and I don't remember it being very hard or bosses taking very long to beat. Most of the movies on this site are "hard games made to look easy"... either my memory is shot or the opposite is true in this case.

Watching the actual glitch room was pretty painful. How long did that part take to record? Honestly, I didn't really enjoy watching this at all (compared to the existing non-glitch movies or otherwise)... but it really is an interesting corruption glitch and an impressive low-level finish.

I really liked the strategic use of death in this one, and I liked how fast the boss fights went. Voting yes. I don't know whether it should obsolete the published 1P run or not, but I did enjoy this one more. EDIT: I have major support for Rising Tempest's suggestion, too.

It was pretty fun to watch and really held my interest until about level 6... probably because I was more familiar with the early levels. Y'know, dying and losing passwords and all... Watching level 8 basically completely sucked. Hallway hallway hallway. Anyhoo I enjoyed it and will be voting "yes". Too bad it's got so many known improvements though. If the old question was in place I'd probably vote "no".

Wow. That was very fun to watch... despite what it looked like on youtube. I'm going to watch it again now in mupen. This game really is amazing TAS material.

I wouldn't be too concerned about these until a TAS of the actual game is completed. Furthermore, the changes are mostly just statistical, and would only slow down the play because it's a hard mode hack. The randoms are as skippable as in the regular game but the bosses are harder, and that just means more level-grinding. I'm happy in that it's another step forward for Phantasy Star hacking (and appreciation) but I don't think it would ever be the least bit suitable for submission at tasvideos. Informing the uninformed remains a noble goal.

Hmm, now that I think of it, is it possible to do that Porkalator glitch in the Castle of Grief on the N64 version of Hexen? I know it has been fixed for v1.1 of the PC version.
I spent a great deal of time trying to get it to work recently, both standing in the way of the trap near the Gibbet teleport and trying to reflect Porkalator shots at myself. I couldn't manage to turn myself into a pig at all in Castle of Grief. The trap definitely didn't work. It still might be possible to porkalate oneself by reflecting it off a centaur's shield, but I tried and wasn't able to; there were a lot of pigs running around.

W&W is a much more pleasant experience without sound. Get a gem = jingle, go though a door = jingle, aaaaaahhhh!
The jingles are annoying but I think the actual music is all really good... especially the introduction and ending theme. This movie was a pleasure to watch. It's been a while since I'd played this game... I forgot it was another excellent property that Rare is responsible for.
