There was some question with the currently published run by DonamerDragon about whether getting the Noble Armor saves time or not because
+ it's a slight defense bonus and offers a couple of resistances
+ the time to pick it up is less than a second
- each time the game says, "Donnie is strong against water attacks" it causes a slight delay
So resistances can be a positive or a negative. I would have to think that using the resistance bug in a TAS, where you have a lot of control over which attacks enemies use and whether or not they succeed, would be of little or no benefit. It's quite possible that it would be negative.
So, here's a Speedrun FAQ that was published for this game, last updated in February 2015: http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/532476-final-fantasy-mystic-quest/faqs/68495
The "big deal" in this FAQ is using an inventory glitch to skip 2 major dungeons and have some other minor benefits. I don't think it's been discussed yet in this thread.
Pretty sure the route described in this FAQ could save 15 minutes or so on the published run.
There may even be other key item-related skips possible with the methods described here.
Bonus fun fact: There were some leaked prototype versions of Phantasy Star IV dumped a few years ago, and pretty easy to find. In these early translations Wren is called "Forn".
I've seen his Japanese name translated as Forren or Fuoren but apparently it was going to be Forn at one point. That's probably a little more accurately why Daughter says "Forn".
As much as I love this game... and I totally adore the runs that've been published... and I really like the way these references in this game tie the series together... I voted no. Really, it's just going out of the way in a very speed-oriented run in an RPG that allows some impressive tricks to watch more text fly by - text that will be completely lost of those who aren't fans of the series.
I don't dislike the effort but I feel there are two major problems:
(1) I don't think it shows enough new content. Technically, it doesn't even show off all of the references, given that so many regular enemies are skipped that are references to the previous game. If someone really wanted to appreciate all of this wonderful content in this game, they would play it. I'd say the additions only serve to slow the run down.
(2) Poorly defined goal - or, at least, it's very difficult to define. There's no metric in the game for showing clever series references or even completing sidequests... just the player's opinion. I don't think this kind of run is well suited to this game or the nature of this site, and it'll open the doors to a whole lot of debate (which isn't strictly negative, but it's something that should be considered).
Hm. Already two battles were more-or-less skipped, the skipping is still kind of time-consuming. It's not a BLJ.
This is either going to be totally cool and wicked awesome or... uh... conceptually pretty neat and awfully boring to watch. I'm hoping for and expecting the former.
Mine is me, in Mega Man 7 form. It also has shifty eyes and a goofy smile.
I used to have a whole bunch of variations of this for a blog I used to do before the term blog was prevalent (2001ish). Basically, every day I posted I'd take a sprite of Bass from Mega Man 7, put my head on it, and re-colour it to indicate my mood and what I was wearing that day. Somewhere I've still got tons of tons of little me-Basses wearing different t-shirts. There must have been at least a hundred of them.
The only other one still online that I know of is .
Yeah, bingo. I'd love to see either type of run. The opinion of the masses is probably different; this game basically already has a published run (kinda), and it ain't the most world-renowned game.
I'm not a ninja, so I don't know what crazy Shinryuu/FinalFighter-esque things wouldn't be possible in the first two games. I know that the pause trick is still in Mega Man (1) in MMAC though.
MMAC also has some unlockables, which are useless and dumb, a map thing (useless for TASing), a turbo button (as SirVG said, useless for TASing)... not sure of anything else. There's also an intro screen and a game selection thing - I could see that actually increasing overall time for some of these games even with quick switching, but I think the entertainment tradeoff might be worth it. Seeing the perfect weapons being used at the perfect times is really beautiful.
