I recently watched a movie which was both entertaining and has specific relevance to the TAS community. The movie is a documentary called King of Kong, and is about how a guy sets out to break a 30 year old world record for the arcade game Donkey Kong, and how the previous record-holder acts when the challenger finally beats it. The documentary catches the ever-so-familiar atmosphere of men doing wierd things for questionable reasons really well. It has some sentimental family moments which I didn't really like but luckily they never linger long enough for you actually get irritated by them. The portrayal of the characters, in spite of the occational overly emotional scene, was really well done. Basically the documentary focuses as much on the two personalities as it does on the record-breaking, which really pans out nicely. Would've been a five if the emotional things had been a little bit better done. Score: 4

if the technological advances of our time has decreased the need to explain natural phenomena, does that mean that there is less need for religion today? if that is true, do you think _science_ will in some day change the way we see God today?

Looking back at human development, why do you think that there has been so much development in technology but so little development in terms of the human psyche? Let me elaborate. The number of groundbreaking technological innovations of the last two centuries vastly outnumber those of the rest of the millenium. We have sent men to space, found cures for various diseases and even produced digital watches - things that were thought impossible not too long ago. However, I feel that the development of the human psyche has not been as... rapid. Why so few? If you think of it, there hasn't been that many new ideas about God or the ego or our place in the word since Aristotele. No new perspectives on the world we live in. Is it a mere result of evolution - that the traits of "the philosophical mind" has never been rewarded and therefore diminished in expression, or is it just a matter of lazyness?

I say: The whole point of TASing is to optimize the number of frames needed to complete the game. Therefore, I think that redoing the game with fadeout lag in mind is, admittedly, hard but still rewarding. Also, afaik, there have been some other improvements as far as SMW-speedrunning goes since the last version was completed, allowing for an even more significant improvement. Good luck to you.

it shouldn't say "software caused connection abort" if it's your router that's messed up. i'd say that you have disabled your irc client in windows firewall or something¨

I know this is kind of late but does the grappling beam-route really save time when getting the Sping Ball (As opposed to freezing an enemy and jumping through the floor/cealing)? I think the latter looks faster but then you have to get into the menu and enable Ice Beam. EDIT: I just read that you've almost completed the game which obviously means that this won't matter anyway. Good work man!

I just spoke to Fabian about some things I identified as flaws but after he explained the mechanics of the game to me I realised that this is as close to optimal you can get. Good work man.

If anyone is trying to make a new SMW speedrun I just want you to know that i figured out that you might gain something like 5 lives at YI2 without any loss of speed. Basically you grab the shell, jump up, drop the shell (down+release y) then land so that you knock it away. You then follow the shell and watch as you gain some lives by the few enemies along the way. This prolly won't slow you down and would be fun to watch. EDIT: Sorry for repeating jimsfriends by the word. Also sorry Fabian if i already told this to you about a month ago or whenever the thought struck me.

a .avi would prolly be quite big. i suggest that you get the proper emulator and get it to work, especially if your isp has some bandwithrestrictions or whatnot

Edit: What was the point of using the message block after beating the castle 3 boss? It didn't seem to save any time, and I assume it wasted time to get it, though I'm not sure because I'm too lazy to watch that part again.
It didn't take any extra time (i think) b/c they waited for Yoshi to appear, however, the use of the block was meant for CC5 but was made redundant because they figured out another way to do it.

Thanks for the thoughts and smv Gorling, I'll keep everything you said in mind. Just for fun, I just did a quick awful demo myself, took like 5 rerecords (all down by the last spike ceiling) and 30 seconds (after I discarded the first idea I tried, which probably would've been very slow anyway). It's something like 30 frames faster than Gorling's. Linky.
I didn't realise you could just fall all the way down. Anyway, the point of my smv was to show that given good timing (unlike my demo) one could get a few frames of flying in the narrow part. Also, diving isn't faster than falling, it just looks that way to the naked eye, right?

A thought for pyramid normal exit: Wouldn't the fastest way be to just carry the p-switch all-the way to the spikey bottom and then do a p-switch jump there to avoid damage? or maybe taking the key is faster i don't know, but still, Be sure to make a save before entering the room as the position of the ball-'n-chains might be random which would prolly affect the speed alot. EDIT: The previous post is completely retarded and should not be viewed by people who're impressionable. I goofed around a bit on console and it seems to me the fastest way is to just dive down there with the cape. Dive as fast as you can, hug the left wall until you're in a good position, press x whenever you're in good positition continue to dive and pull up just before you hit the second "floor" of spikes. This will give you a few more frames of air-time before Mario hits the spiked cieling (don't think you can avoid that w/o losing time). He then becomes invincible, falls onto the floor which gives you enough time to jump with him to safety. Crappy demo here: Link Alternatively, you can do something along the lines of diving into the spikes and then use the flying-speed-while-running-bug to gain a few frames. Sorry i have no smv on this, I just play around with a savestate on the console. EDIT2: Fixed a crappy demo. Also, you prolly won't have to jump of the grey platform to gain flying, I don't know why i did that. If you do have to jump up to become flying then maybe key-jumping is faster after all. Oh, and pounding the p-block in the beginning of the room saves loads of time, so the p-block-jump idea was retarded (which has already been stated).

As far as worldmap moves goes note that some moves take longer than others (the longer you go the more time it takes). So you know, when you get to the water world just check which order you take the levels as there's a few frames of overworld movement that can be avoided that way. Should be pretty obvious which route is the right one, but i'm just saying it so that you keep it in mind. (Btw, i changed the name of the topic)

Fabian: As far as route is concerned i think that the one you suggested is the best (i.e. take all the star worlds in the end and then go for big boo). Be sure that you clear the secret exit of any castle the first thing you do so that no forced movements would be in excess. Also, flying in castle #4 is prolly going to be a bitch

As long as you're just discussing general routes you can keep it in this thread but i suggest that as soon as you release your first WIP you do that in a separate thread so that people don't confuse one movie with the other. Also, i really encourage you to do this and I bet that so does everyone else.

Nice segment. Wouldn't it be possible to use the same trick flagitious and VIPer7 use in the Mario World in 10:36 when they land on the wall after defeating big boo? It will probably mean you lose your flying but maybe you can do something else and still survive, I don't remember how the level look. Worth testing.[/b][/quote]
