Do you think there is any chance of manipulating a fish in World 2-3 of SMB2j to get into the ground to skip the flagpole like in HappyLee's SMB -3 ending run?
Yes. It's hard, so I've made a demonstration (fcm): Link to video This only makes sense in the warpless run of the original FDS version of SMB2J, which currently we don't have. "The Lost Levels" from Super Mario All Stars forces Mario to go into the castle, making it not useful, along with special endings of some other stages. PS: This might be the wrong thread for discussion. There's an SMB2J thread.

After some quick calculations, I'm finding that G is faster than F even though I only get 20 shots and have to use only knife till the next red ball. The main difference is in the speed you can use knife. For F, I have to continuously use the slower version of knife attacks (I was able to get in three knife attacks between each shot of F), but for G, I can jump onto the brain and start using faster knife before I get another G.
Nice result. Have you thought of the idea of getting F for one player and getting all G for another? That way the waiting time can be reduced a lot. The player who gets G can stand on the brain and fire G during jumping (4 shots per jump, really fast). It also helps to manipulate luck better.
The problem is figuring out the best way to destroy the hoop shooting bots before rootmars2 and how to avoid the D that the second one drops.
Using 2 F + all the bombs, I guess. I managed to jump over that D twice without frame advance, so I don't think it would be a problem during TASing.

Standing on the nose is indeed faster only because it provides extra damage from F, S or G, so each shot should save the time hitting the same damage with knives. (I'm not good at calculation, but I would assume about 20 frames can be saved from each shot? Not too much, isn't it?) G should be the fastest for the firing speed and damage, but not necessarily the best, because 20 G shots can be used up pretty fast, and once it's used up, you have to wait for about 1 round of red ball to get another G for a certain player. There can be only 1 red ball for each round. While standing on the nose, F cannot do great damage I think. So the problem is how to use F properly. I think maybe F should be used on the left side of the brain, since it can get the greatest damage? I would say, the idea of getting S for both players for the bubble and doors, and getting F + S for rootmars2 is worth a shot, considering the fact that F may not be so useful on the nose. So what is the best option from the bubble? It could be all G, it could be F + bombs, and it could be S + bombs. I don't know. Testing is needed. Edit: Also it could be S or F for one player, and all G for another, because G is much more efficient than 10 bombs. I've also found that G can be shot much faster during the jump pressing down (four G shots can be fired in one jump), so G is probably more useful on the brain during jumping (which is required for ducking the "brain wave") than on the nose.

Awesome WIP, again! I haven't seen such quick rootmars1 fight. Now the hardest parts have already been done. (Edit: except for the final boss fight maybe...) I thought you would use 2 shotguns one for each player, because S is much more efficient than F at the bubble and the doors, and you probably don't need to save much for the boss, for you can get as many bombs, F or G as you want in theory from the orange bubbles. Maybe there's a special reason you choose to use C and F for the other player rather than S? For the next stage, I don't know if the two machines (or what its name) are useful at all. But I'm a little worried that 20 bombs may not be enough to clear the way. I would probably get the I from one of the hoop shooting bots and use few bombs against them (because close shots of I are powerful enough), and get one S for each player, destroy the tank probably, and skip the C. That's probably just my theory, because I haven't done any tests.

I've tested that and you're right. The trick does add great difficulty to luck manipulation, though. I'm not sure if G is the best option, because G can be used up pretty fast on the nose, and it takes at least 2 rounds of orange balls for one player to get a weapon. Maybe F is better because it takes a lot longer time to be used up, and the player can manipulate to get 10 bombs while firing F?

I made an encode and uploaded on YouTube for anyone who'd like to watch zk547's wonderful WIP (up to rootmars1) online. I also hope the run won't stay like this for long, because it's so close to being finished. Keep up the good work, zk547. :D Link to video

Me too. I really wish someone could improve FBA-rr, which hasn't been updated for a long time. Watching your WIP has really made my day, for which I should thank you. I think your run's definitely good enough, and already extremely hard to improve. I can hardly imagine all the great efforts you've put in this run, due to the difficulty of controlling 2 players simultaneously and heavy luck manipulation. The hardest parts have already been finished. All there's left are mostly just getting 2 shotguns and bomb everything blocking the way. Please don't lose motivation. It would be a great run in the end, even if it's not perfect. Hardly anything's perfect, right? :)

Sorry to bring this up, but how's the run going, zk547? By the way, I've always been planning to do a Metal Slug 3 TAS, but I find it difficult because FBA-rr crashes and desyncs so much, so is there any good way to keep it stable? Also, does anyone here know if there's a way to make FBA-rr skip lag frames automatically? Thanks in advance. :)

It's a great idea to find an alternative to FBA-rr, since it crashes and desyncs horribly and haven't been updated for a long time. FBAS has good stability, and I like its autofire settings. However, when I tried to TAS Metal Slug 3 for example, the movie files both desyncs from the very beginning for my two attempts. How I hope someone can update FBA-rr and make it more stable.

For those of you who love Mario Forever series, there's finally a complete and decent serie of TASes of World 1 to World 8. I use Mario Forever Advance Edition (the official "hard mode" of Mario Forever 4.4). It hasn't been easy, for Hourglass causes crashes a lot, and it's very hard to do precise jumps and manipulate luck in Mario Forever. I would say, things got increasingly hard since World 5, and World 8 is extremely hard. So, enjoy. :) Link to video Link to video Link to video Link to video Link to video Link to video Link to video Link to video

I voted YES because I love this run and the game itself. But I'm not sure whether this category's fit for TASVideos publication though, due to the great similarities between it and Zero any% run. I wish there would be some unexpected strategies, and that would make a difference.

Copying what I wrote on the comments: The responsible memory adress is 0x0751, which determines where on a screen you are put after taking a pipe/vine (while 0x0750 determines which screen you end up on). The adress is set to 6 after passing a pipe in 7-2 and doesn't get cleared until 8-1. While in the warps route it is set to 0 in 5-2 and stays there. If you set other values via Cheats, it takes you to other parts of the level and higher values crash or go to the title screen.
This inspired me and I did this demonstration, which shows a "secret exit" and a "secret ending" both in 5-1 Warp Zone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wt7Ths_ip4

The only useful places are 8-1 and C-1 in the warpless category. I could get a Crash without Cheats by game overing in 8-4 with the value at 17, continuing and doing the glitch in 8-1.
I'm interested in the Crash mostly. Is ACE possible in some of the SMB or SMB2J crashes or completely out of the question?

I found that glitch during the Maximum Coins run, and don't know how to name it. I've tested it with various kinds of common enemies, and only Pirana Plants and the flagpole can be hit this way. It has something to do with the dead bodies of the previous enemies. Would be very interesting if someone figures out a way to use it. Link to video

Would be funny if that had ACE potential. That would mean RAT926/poleovermania found ACE glitches in 3 NES games (with SMB3 and Zelda).
Wow. Those are actually gold stuff. I had similar ideas before, but mine caused more lags than crashes. I believe that coins are the key items here. It seems that the glitch mainly crashes the graphical system, but whether it affects useful memory addresses is unknown. So how do we prove whether a glitch has ACE potential? Is there a better way to test this than depending on pure luck? Thanks again. :)

I thought someone did find ways to corrupt the memory of SMB, so I opened my proxy server for YouTube with great excitement, and then... Anyway, I'm more than interested to find ways to achieve ACE on SMB, or to prove whether it's possible. Unfortunately I have very limited knowledge for NES programming, so I wonder if there's anyone who'd like to work on it together. Thanks. :D

Sorry to raise an old thread again. I did some tests about this game, and made a demonstration of 3 boss glitches. Not sure if these were already known, or can be used in TASes. The first two seems more like a joke, but the third one might be actually useful knowing what has caused it. The first one is about the fake Jet Stingray showing after the car race, and both X and Zero can kill him with some regular weapons, but it's strange that he can't be damaged using the ice weapon (both X and Zero) and the giga attack of X. Killing him or not won't influence the real Jet Stingray whatsoever. The second one is Web Spider's HP bar glitch after being hit into -1 HP. He'll still die, of course. The third one, on the contrary, is Jet Stingray not dying after being hit into -1 HP. There's a way to hit Jet Stingray twice using Frost Tower (for reasons I don't know), which is shown 3 times in this demonstration. I wonder if it can be used in TASes or with Zero. Link to video

Hi. One similar question again: since there have been already several H.265 encoders (such as x265) in use, has anyone tested how H.265 performs on TAS movies compared to H.264 that we currently use? When do you think might H.265 start to replace H.264 here? Thank you. :)

Outstanding TAS indeed, and one of the best SMW TASes I've seen in years. Thank you for all the efforts. YI3 and YI4 are fantastic, and SW3 is so clever, so are other improvements. There are actually quite a few details that impress me, such as the ending of IY 2, "DO IT" in the Big Boo fight (thanks to Shia LaBeouf and BrunoValads), the entertaining Bowser fight, and the hilarious ending in which the princess falls right above Mario and crushes him with her dress... :)

How come there's no 99 lives in neither 100% run nor warpless run? I almost burst into tears when I see this run only has 45 lives in the end. But anyway, this deserves a yes vote from me...

Thank you. After your explanation and watching the Heatman glitch from YouTube, the whole glitch makes a lot more sense to me. However, I wonder if anyone has ever conjoined those pieces of maps all together and make one complete map. Maybe some time-saving shortcuts can be found? Just curious. :)

Sorry that I'm new to this game and don't know much about it, but I met a glitch in the Wood Man stage that I couldn't explain. Could anyone tell me what I did or where I am? Haven't seen anything like this in a TAS, though, so I wonder if a similar glitch could be useful somewhere. Thanks. Link to video
