I remembered an example of a TAS getting rejected partially because it started at a later point in the game instead of at the beginning, despite being a built-in feature. So here's some precedent: https://tasvideos.org/1533S
Quote from the judge of that submission: Firstly, I don't like the idea of running only one cup. That would either mean that we publish every cup as a different movie, or have both a "full run" and an "any % run" which would be identical for the last cup. Neither of these is a good idea. There's no such problem in this hack. Although I've never played Mario Kart 64, "all cups" does seem like a solid goal. The main goal in SMB or most SMB hacks is to save the princess, and this TAS does exactly that.

A TAS that suits the Playground or Gruefood since all it accomplishes is jumping to the final world and completing that instead of each level which the [5058M|current Publication achieves].
It accomplishes beating a game in the fastest time. If that doesn't mean anything to you, then half of the movies on TASVideos can be deleted.

Good example but the difference is that in that run you "earn" the right to select the level within that run.
True, you don't have to earn it in this hack, because it's a free gift from the hack creator. So what's wrong of using it?

The submission text says this: “ Like the original, no warps are implemented so all levels must be completed.” They clearly don’t believe the level selection counts as a warp in this case or even something worth doing in a run, so they didn’t utilize it. Whether they knew it existed or not is completely irrelevant since the goal was to play all levels.
I'm not saying that world selection counts as a warp either. But the second half the sentence (all levels must be completed) is incorrect.

When you say stuff like these in your submission: “The real any% run of this hack should start at World 8.” “if this hack is allowed to be published on this site, it deserves a real any% run.” Then I find it very hard to believe your intention wasn’t to obsolete the current run.
I don't know how you assume my intention, but all I said was that the current published TAS is not a real any% run (as movie length can tell). How the current publication should be treated is not up to me to decide, it's up to the judges.

A simple question, do you think if there were RTA leaderboards for this hack, "any%" would be selecting the last level and completing it? I highly doubt it.

First of all, The current publication is essentially a warpless or all levels run. While it may not say “warpless” or “All Levels” in the branch, you can absolutely tell that that’s what the goal is just from watching the movie. So this submitted movie aiming for any% wouldn’t even obsolete the current publication if it was accepted.
I agree that the current publication is essentially an "all levels" run, but it wasn't in the branch label, and wasn't stated in the submission or publication text, so I assume it aimed for any%, but the authors and judges simply didn't know or forgot that world selection is possible.

2nd of all, all you really did in this movie was select the last sets of levels and just played through them. There’s no unique content being shown here, especially since this hack doesn’t contain warp pipes to other levels. It would be entirely unfair to the authors of the current publication, who worked hard on optimizing all of the levels in the game, to replace it with one that skips everything not because of some glitch or some wrong warp but instead by just selecting the last few levels.
Mostly true, but I didn't say in the submission text that my any% TAS is intended to replace any TAS. That's for judges to decide.

In comparison to that, skipping to the final world via a level select and declaring it a real any% run feels pretty cheap.
Yeah, I find it pretty cheap myself, because it's too obvious (although no one mentions it in the published TAS somehow). However, my TAS is the fastest completion of this hack, so it is a real any% run.
GMP wrote:
selecting the last level and completing is just lame and completely misses the point of showing off a hack.
It's an any% run. It doesn't intend to show all of a hack. It simply aims to beat this hack as fast as possible. Even the published "all levels" run doesn't show all of this hack. For example, this hack has hidden new power-ups, and the published run got none of them. A TAS can't make everyone happy. If you don't like the any% run, watch runs with other goals instead.

Rules are rules. The current Wiki: MovieRules are comprehensive enough. You can't change the rules just because you don't like my movie. Since you also claimed to judge this submission, I expect you to be fair. The current Wiki: MovieRules doesn't say that a TAS has to start from the very first level of the game, especially when it's optional. If the hack creator allows to start at World 8, it means Worlds 1-7 are optional for completion. Since they are optional, why waste time completing them in an any% run?

Historically, skipping to the end through level select has not been allowed. TASes submitted here are expected to start at the beginning.
I checked the Wiki: MovieRules. There's no rule that says a TAS has to start from the very first level of the game, especially when it's free to select a World (which is allowed by the hack creator).

Yeah, this is effectively a level select password. It doesn't matter if the dev or even the game itself tells you that you can do it, it is still explicitly barred by our rules.
I don't think pressing B counts as a "password". Selecting worlds is literally in creator's manual.

This looks like a good movie for demonstration, and can certainly entertain some people, but I have concerns about having movies like this published on TASVideos, so I'm going to post different opinions. To me, this looks like playing a game with super game-breaking cheat. I know technically it's not cheat, but it feels a lot like cheat. I'm not sure what the actual goal is. If the goal is "completing a game that looks like Super Mario Bros. in the fastest time", then what if someone else makes a even faster version "Hyperfast Mario Bros." one day? Technically I think if someone improves the code further, it can make Mario move faster and further reduce lags and waiting time. Will that obsolete this run?

Voting yes. This TAS is technically impressive. The goal is solid and challenging (more challenging than SMB1 all items), and it shows more of the game than a regular warpless TAS. I think the category name should be something like "all items, World 1-8".

Nice TAS, but just asking... Isn't the current RTA WR of this game 01:20? https://www.speedrun.com/dad_n_me/run/yjd5917y The RTA run uses glitches. But the title of this TAS isn't "glitchless".

Play any movie to complete the game 8 times (you still have to wait until you return to the title even if you have reached the ending). That way you need to create a .sav file that has collected 8 stars for your emulator.

I like the goal, which I've tested myself some years ago. I didn't manage to make this movie mostly because I haven't figured out the best way to solve the "8 stars" requirement. I have trouble playing the movie file on FCEUX. It starts on 1-1 instead of A-1. The author didn't give any instructions in the submission text, so I don't know what to do.

Thanks for helping change the category name. "X, no items" seems accurate to me. A question for the judges: would an "X, Ultimate Armor (any%)" TAS be acceptable on TASVideos? I see that the rules are changed and in-game codes can be accepted. It would be very different than normal X runs, and faster than a Zero TAS.

None. But "0%" may sound like that the game is not completed or mostly skipped. Maybe that's why very few speedruns are called "0%".

Would it be correct to call this "no items" and [1839] PSX Mega Man X4 "X, all items" by sparky in 39:45.00 "all items"? If percentage is not present in the game, we prefer to mention which entity constitutes completion. Also if the final item quantity is zero (RTA rules say "No amount of items can be collected for this category"), then low% wouldn't be accurate since it means "minimum but not 0". Same difference as between "all" versus "max/high".
I'm not really sure about the perfect name for this category, so it's up to the judges to decide. I called it low% mostly because RTA called it low%, and I didn't call it 0% because it still completes the game with all bosses defeated.

Thanks for the explanation. I think 40:05.25 should be the correct movie time, and 59.94005994005994 should be the correct frame rate. I hope someone can fix it soon. Also, thanks to scrimpeh and McBobX for your warm comments. :)

I was wondering though. Is it faster to beat Earth Sigma last, instead of Gunner Sigma last like in the X 100% TAS?
Good question. I didn't test that during this TAS, because in order to beat Gunner Sigma last, you need to take damage two times more (otherwise the Soul Body won't reach Sigma), and X simply doesn't have that much HP left. But I did some quick calculation. The final boss fight is 166 frames slower than sparky's 100% TAS. 60 frames are because of lack of charged shot and Nova Strike, and 73 frames are because having to take damage to fight Gunner Sigma. So I guess they're close, and maybe fighting Gunner Sigma last would be slightly faster for 100% TAS.

I have a question with the frame rate. For my last two PSX submissions, the time showed on the submission page are different from the time showed on BizHawk. On the submission page, it says Frame Rate "60.009601536245796", but in our Platform Framerates page, it says PSX 59.94005994005994, and I can't seem to find where "60.009601536245796" comes from.

Jet Stingray Quick Kill (New Strategy) 150 frames faster than sparky's 100% TAS. Link to video Frost Walrus Quick Kill (New Strategy) 108 frames faster than sparky's 100% TAS. Link to video More improvements over sparky's TAS have been found. But I may not want to start a new 100% TAS soon, because some routes end up really close, hard to calculate, hard to choose. Recently I've been making an "X low%" TAS. It's a long project, and would take a long time for me to finish alone. Anyone here wants to collaborate? :)
