Voting Yes after watching the whole movie. This is a very special TAS, and I'm so happy to see it finished. My only concern is it being too long. Many parts of this TAS is excellent, but some part seems a bit slow-paced. In my opinion, the ideal glitchfest/playaround TAS doesn't need to aim for showing "as much as possible", but should have amazing style and great density of content.

HappyLee, I didn't know you were also interested in doing Mega Man X(5)! (Although I haven't done any Mega Man related TASes in ages.) Are you planning to do anything else with Mega Man X5, or anything else Mega Man related?
I'm mostly interested in Mega Man X4. Most of the Mega Man X4 and X5 TAS here seem pretty optimized to me, especially Bernka's runs. I've been thinking of making a Mega Man X4 low% TAS. I've thought of some strategies, but the main problem is that a Mega Man X4 TAS would be long and a very big project, which I probably can't finish by myself. So I might try some short runs for a start and see how they go.

Awesome TAS, just from a technical standpoint. Few people would expect to see game end in 0.32 seconds. Sorry that I don't know much about the technical details, but are there lots of NES games can be done this way just like SMB3? What about SMB1? Thanks.

My top concern is: when will our lives return to normal (pre-2019)? Or is this our future now, that we're going to social distance forever?

Yes vote. Very nice idea. I've been thinking of doing Mega Man X4 "200%" but I have no time. Are you planning to do X4 or X5 TAS in the future? :D

This isn't a speedrun though. It is tool-assisted, but it's not a speedrun. ... I don't think it's in good faith to call it a speedrun, especially when it just isn't one. But if you didn't call it one, how does it fit on a site with speedruns?
I've never once called it a speedrun in the submission text, despite the fact that speed is the secondary goal of this TAS. Check out our site logo. It clearly says: TASVideos, Tool-assisted superplay movies.

No one can compete because it's strictly a TAS run due to the bizarre frame-perfect glitching and use of multiple directions here.
Of course people can compete. This TAS can be obsoleted if a lower amount of A presses is reached, or a faster time with the same amount of A presses. People can aim for fewest jumps or minimum A presses in a real-time gameplay also. It's a less popular goal, but still some people do. The goal (A Button Challenge) is more popular in SM64, and there were actually wiki pages created for this challenge. https://ukikipedia.net/wiki/A_Button_Challenge https://smo-speedrun.fandom.com/wiki/Minimum_A/B_Presses https://pannenkoek2012.fandom.com/wiki/A_Button_Challenge In a TAS, entertainment isn't all about speed. If you like speedy TAS, I've made lots of speedy SMB TASes over the years. Hopefully this TAS shows that SMB TAS isn't all about holding right and run all the way through, and there could be interesting alternative goals other than fastest time.

This is a bit of an unusual movie, because it's basically a solution to a puzzle, and in order to be entertained while watching it, you have to be thinking about the puzzle yourself.
Yeah that's very true.

One thing that gives me pause: how much advantage does this run get from being a TAS? (In particular, are there any tricks that are unlikely to be replicated by a skilled person at the controls?)
Check out this video: What is the Minimum Amount of Jumps Needed to Beat Super Mario Bros? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAAGvyn7FOM It uses 124 A presses, exactly the double as this TAS. Many movements may seem easy and smooth in this TAS, but it's actually very very hard. I don't need to mention setups like in 8-1 & 8-2 & 8-4 Cheep Cheep room that already look really hard. Take 1-1 final stage as an example, you can rarely get it without savestates, and it's actually one of the easiest moves in this TAS. Take 8-4 2nd room's A press save between the pipes as another example, you almost can't get it even if you know how to do it (double stomp the first Koopa and stomp the second Koopa) and use savestates.

For a long of the "minimum button press" type of runs, the runs that have stood out are the ones that have had the lowest counts. Examples of those would be the "Walkathon" type of TASes that have been published on the site, such as the ones for Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario Bros. which respectively press the sprint button 5 and 0 times respectively. Another example would be Super Mario 64, which, while it is not currently published on the site, as a much lower required of A presses of 1, which would make it more notable than this Super Mario Bros. submission. This minimal A press TAS presses the A button a total of 62 times, which really does not sound as impressive as anything of the sort that was done with other challenge runs, which leads me to believe that this TAS may not have its place on the site.
Please understand that Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64 are totally different games. You can't even pass the first Goomba if you don't jump. Completing 8-2 in only 4 jumps, and 8-4 Cheep Cheep room in 0 A presses, you have to admit that it's crazy and not like anything we've seen before. How is that not impressive?

I personally think that the number of A presses that the movie contains is rather deceiving.
What do you mean by that? There's an A button counter at the right side of the encode, and you can count the A presses by counting the time Mario jumps. How is that deceiving?

Re-record count: 62
Was this a mistake?
The real re-record count is sadly lost in our many many versions of test fm2 movies. My assumption is that the real re-record count should be more than 300000. But since we've lost that number, I just put the A press count 62 there.

I sincerely hope that this TAS can be accepted and that TASvideo opens up a little more on the different possible categories for a game (other than any%, 100%, playaround ...), as long as they demonstrate new and interesting things worth it. Which is the case for this TAS in my opinion.
Thank you. That is also our hope. The goal "minimum A presses" may sound arbitrary at first, and 62 is not a small number, but it's a solid goal, and to me, entertainment matters the most. For example, the goal "minimal R presses" may lead to a normal & boring TAS. The same goal "minimum A presses" may lead to a boring TAS in other games. So they may not be the right goal choice. If a goal is solid, and may lead to a very entertaining and surprising movie, or can show a very creative way of playing a game, to me that can be a good goal choice.

Very nice, especially 8–2. In 8–4, I was wondering, can’t you use the three goombas somehow to avoid a jump before the moving platform in the lava pit?
Thank you. In 8-4, there's nothing clever to be done in the first stage. You can't use those Goombas to break the wall without any additional jump. In this TAS, we've done many things that were almost impossible or unbelievable, so we've thought and tried a lot and there shouldn't be any obvious improvements.

Our TAS is NOT an improvement to Brandon Evans's "minimum buttons pressed" TAS by any standards. Feel free to compare them anyway you like, but those are entirely different movies.

Super Mario Bros. "no Left" TAS in 10:47.93 by HappyLee, Kriller37, Mars608 & KFCMario Link to video SMB can be completed without ever pressing Left. This TAS demonstrates the fastest way possible. It's interesting that the fastest route happens to show entering 5-1 through 1-2 wrong warp glitch. Authors (who have their Left button broken): HappyLee, Kriller37, Mars608 & KFCMario HappyLee: I started this project back in 2009. Mars608 and KFCMario joined the project mostly during 2012 to 2015. We've made several demo runs, but the project was postponed many times simply because a Firebar in 6-4 always gets in our way. I felt that there should be a way to avoid that. I restarted this project in 2020 with Kriller37. The 6-4 Firebar problem was solved with 5-1 Bullet Bill glitch ending, which is the hardest and the last piece of the puzzle. Killer37 finished many stages like 5-3, 7-1, 8-1 and 8-2, and his great skills and high efficiency make this TAS finally see the light of the day in 2020. Q: Why do you slow down in many places? A: Most of the slow downs are for entertainment, and some to avoid certain timer. This game has 21 frame rule, so slowing down doesn't necessarily mean time loss. Q: Can this be done by real-time speedrunners? A: I believe YES, because SMB speedrunners nowadays have done crazier things. There's no super-hard glitch involved in this route. I'd certainly love to see a "no Left" real-time speedrun someday. :) http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/69015692389962788

The quality of the run itself is great. DaSmileKat is a brilliant TASer in my opinion. Yes, my upcoming "good ending" TAS is going to be VERY different than this run. But whether this "bad ending" branch is worthy of publication here? I'm not sure, and I'll leave it to the judges. :)

Does it desync differently upon replaying? If it desyncs consistently, it must be the problem with savestates.
Differently. It could be a playback problem. Maybe something to do with my use of Turbo? But technically Turbo shouldn't relate to desync.

Great project, thank you feos. So excited to see Arcade games running on BizHawk. I tried a very quick Metal Slug 3 TAS with a few savestates. During the making, everything is great, no crash whatsoever. Unfortunately, I tried playback 3 times. First time desyncs on Mission 3, second time desyncs on Mission 1, the third time desyncs on Mission 3 but later than the first time. Can the playback desync issue be fixed? Thanks. :)

It's necessary to point out that this branch should be named "bad ending any%", because Mario won't have the chance to fight the final Boss and rescue the Princess with this strat, doesn't count as really completing the game. This movie shouldn't obsolete the current EMB publication, which should be named "true ending (no continue)". I've been working on an improvement of the current publication for quite a while, which hopefully would be a big surprise to all. There's also a 100% category, but it's hard to definite it. In my mind, the best category of this game is "true ending (no continue)".

Beautiful TAS, amazing improvements! This is Super Mario World TAS at its best. Can't wait for 96-exit TAS also! :) Update: Side-by-side comparison video: Link to video Note: It seems that the new TAS saves 3 frames in the Dark Room, but somehow loses 1 frame in the final Bowser fight.
