The grand majority of time is spent on research, reading the game code, understanding how the game works, looking for exploitable mechanics or glitches, routing, trying different options. These are all things done by hand, things that require creativity and are not easily automatable (yet). To be fair, this submission shows very little of this work in the final result just because of how optimized it already was. The only improvement found by me (yes, manually) during this phase was the better mushroom collection route in world 1.
I do respect your work, MrWint, and I've learnt the story of how you've made this run through your submission text. But I don't know if you've read the submission text from my last warpless run in 2012 (I think maybe you should have since that's the run you were trying to obsolete?), there was a huge hint of World 1 new route during the "1-4" section:

I've came up with a crazy idea once, that is to get the mushroom in 1-3 instead of 1-2, and then get the fire flower in 1-4. What really shocked me was that the idea almost saved 21 frames. Although I've tried my best to manage to get that flower in a quickest way, there are still about 3 more frames to go in order to save time. And since this new route would be a bit less entertaining, I still kept the old route.
So combine that knowledge with 1-4 fast getting Fireflower technique, you can easily get the improvement of World 1 new route. The hardest part is actually getting Fireflower in running speed, and you did that through your exhaustive search tools. As I said, improvements found by exhaustive search tools and improvements found by human TASers just don't feel and mean the same. So it actually doesn't take much creativity (except for the creativity to create exhaustive search tools) to discover World 1 new route if you had read my submission text. Again, this is NOT a criticism of any kind. Just clearing some facts.

There's no feasible way to build a bot that does the hard work (in most games).
I agree with you on everything else. At least for this run, I think most of the hard work or really important work is done by MrWint's tools, since everything else was done before, and it doesn't need too much work or any imagination at all to imitate or replicate what's already been discovered or done before. That's why I think using exhaustive search tools on SMB to come up with an improvement over previous projects doesn't make much sense (unless combined with really interesting ideas), and there are much better places and games where the work of such tools makes more sense and human creativity would take the most credits.

So true. Simply just not a match to exhaustive search tools.

Well, after running his exhaustive search bot and solving the 4-4 puzzle, that's the limit of 4-4, isn't? As I said, we are getting really really close to the very limit of SMB (or maybe already there), and every time improvement could mean the last. I think it's important to know that rather than fooling ourselves that there's somehow always possibilities or room to find new improvements. Maybe for most other games, but not for SMB. (I know this since I've been TASing it for years, and so far there hasn't been an discovery to tell me that my whole career is wrong.) By the way, I did think that the 1 frame in 4-4 may never be gotten, but I was never 100% sure on that one, and I've tested 4-4 probably three or four times during these years (and failed, because it's indeed extremely hard). And yes, it was my mistake, but it doesn't mean that I've made many mistakes elsewhere, or that SMB doesn't have a limit.

At the time I thought it was a good idea, because of how optimized it already is, you can better judge how well you're doing. This was entirely new to me and I've tackled a problem like this before, so having a way to measure how good you're doing was very useful. Other aspects of SMB, like the frame rule and its fairly static nature made me wish I chose a different game in the end, but alas it was too late, and it was still great fun creating it. So the genuine answer is "I didn't know any better" I guess.
Thank you for explaining it. I see your method as the future to many TASes, which I don't know is a good or bad thing. On the one hand, it can discover improvements that are almost impossible to be found by human TASers (like 4-4 in this run); on the other hand, it can quite possibly lay off TASers of many games since it's impossible to beat exhaustive search. Maybe cooperating with other TASers of the game is a better idea for the future. In my opinion, SMB is pretty much at its limit right now. It's been years since brand new glitches are found. I'm not sure if combining your method with SMB TASing can bring really surprising discoveries, but I'm always positive with improvements and looking forward to future cooperation, if possible. ---- BTW, on my YouTube channel and other TAS videos page, there are always people who merely see TAS as a robot or program doing inputs, and comment something like: "What's so impressive about robot playing games?", and I always respond to them even though my English is not that good, something like "I'm a human, not a robot. If you don't believe me, meet me in China." But now, I don't know what to think and say, as the unpredictable future of robots surpassing human has already arrived. I've seen robots solving a Rubik's cube at lighting speed (less than 1 second). It has only impressed me for a second, because it doesn't take a robot any imagination to solve a puzzle like this, since it has probably calculated all possibilities and simply chosen the fastest one. Surely you can argue that it's human that create robots so creativity still comes from human, but I don't think we're talking about the same kind of creativity here. To me, the most impressive thing in TAS isn't reaching for the time limits through combinations of inputs, but it's the wisdom and creativity it takes during the process. Imagine if one day robots can paint art better than human artists, and you show art works of that robots to me, I'll definitely be impressed at the first one: "Wow! I can't believe it's from a robot!", and maybe the second one, but I'm not sure if I'll continue to be impressed as it's less impressive if a robot's simply doing its job, and it has plenty of power and time to do almost anything, and doesn't have to feel lonely or depressed or anything else. In cases of human vs. AI, I just don't think it would make a fair competition, because the limits of a robot and the limits of a human are just not the same. It's nothing like human vs. human in a chess game, "let the smarter one win", or in a running match, "let the faster one win". What makes works from a robot less impressive is that robots simply have higher limits and potentials. For example, if the 4-4 puzzle were solved by a human through imagination and reasoning, I would be so impressed that I'd be his best friend, but when I know that 4-4 is solved by exhaustive search (plus MrWint's work of programming and putting all actions together), I still find it impressive, but I'm much less impressed. I don't know if anyone knows what I mean... ---- It's kind of like TAS vs. RTA. Why do I enjoy watching TAS when I know it's not recorded in real time? Because TAS movies are usually obviously more entertaining and technically impressive. If a TAS ends up pretty much like a regular speedrun, why do I need to watch this TAS? I can just watch a human player performing it live. I don't know if you understand what I mean by this, MrWint. If I were you and made such an excellent program, I would use it on where human TASers are very weak at, and use it to solve most incredible things. That would be really impressive. If the end result looks exactly like not using it, what's the point of using a bot? I know that your program and your extraordinary programming skills have much more potentials than merely solving the 4-4 puzzle. Edit: In case if anyone misunderstands me (I'm probably bad at expression), I didn't mean that no one should run an exhaustive search bot over SMB. In fact, I'd very much like to cooperate with MrWint on this, and see if his new method would bring anything interesting or more improvements I don't know about. I was just saying that improvements found by a human TASer and through exhaustive search bots don't feel the same. And there are lots of better places and games to perform the bot on, and maybe discovering exciting new things, ratter than proving what we've already known.

Why should we judge a movie based on how the autors work? Nobody can claim they are better because they are using a bot, or not using one. What is more important is the result, no? Well, I care. When I'm appreciating an art work, I'd very much like to know the story behind it and its author. And I care if a work is done by human or robots, because they are clearly very different. Can't really compete with exhaustive search bots because they always win, and the best thing you can do is a tie.

Why would you think it's fear of rejection? That's not a problem. Let this one be published, and let me and Mars608 surprise you in 2-3 months when we finish our run as we planned. How about that? (When was I arguing that this run shouldn't be published? I never did that. I was arguing that individual level time result doesn't matter really much not only because of the framerule, but also the fact that nothing really new would come out of individual level competitions.)

Again, I think MrWint is clearly a genius on making bots, which is something I can't do, but using it on SMB warpless instead of less optimized runs (plenty out there) is confusing to me. It's like using a cannon to kill a pig for bacon. I'm sure MrWint has tested mostly everything he could think of, but judging from the result, it tied with SMB any% and me & Mars608's warpless WIP that uses no bot, and the only real improvement is 4-4 puzzle break. Please don't get me wrong again, but I think it's useless to explore if there's anything at all that can be improved through individual level time improvement (which doesn't make any sense due to framerule) because MrWint has already done that, and all he's got is previously known optimizations except 4-4. Those are not real improvements of any kind (except for 4-4). The real improvements are something like my ideas of getting 2-1 ground clip through a backward flying Koopa Paratroopa and shell kicking in 3-1. Real improvements require imagination.

I didn't say you copied my input. I said that you maybe copied my movement from maximum coins TAS. Even though you might have worked out through your program, it's still not original since it's already in the maximum coins TAS.

These are not mutually exclusive. When I said "Bullet Bill luck", it is RNG manipulation, and you can theoretically have both.
Again, I think you've misunderstood what I meant. I meant that I was not aiming for the fastest Bullet Bill shot in 8-2, and you should know that it is a stylistic choice that I slowed down on purpose for the entertainment of the whole level.
MrWint wrote:
Well that's just straight-up false, you didn't slow down at all. Your method was slower because you were jumping, limiting your speed to walking speed. Sorry to say this, but I feel like you're not actually remembering your own run and which decisions you made and just making things up here.
That's what I meant for "slowing down". Not going full speed up is sort of slowing down, right? Maybe it's my poor expression. OF COURSE I know it's faster to run on the pipe, don't you think I'd know that? It's just my style of jumping into the pipe, and what's wrong with that?
MrWint wrote:
Not true, the Cheep-Cheeps are actually fairly predictable and fixed, e.g. my 2-3 Cheep-Cheep is the exact same as yours, it's just about the way you do the clip.
At least it's true for the 7-3 case, where you calculated "4.325 frames". Mars608's WIP got a perfect Cheep-cheep in 7-3 which is way faster than yours, but we don't think it's an accomplishment or an real improvement of any kind.
MrWint wrote:
You're very defensive about this, and I can understand that, as it probably feels like I'm "invading" your domain of SMB in some way. All of this is not an attack on you or your runs, and I'm not claiming that my run is better because of 0.1 frames here or there, it is merely a documentation on what's possible, something that can be useful in other runs.
To be honest, to me, your run hasn't shown anything new except the early jumping technique in 4-4. That alone is impressive enough as it has proved that I've made a mistake, but you make a whole list making it sound like that I've made more than one mistakes and there's plenty to be optimized. I don't need you to tell me that because I know when I've made a mistake and when I haven't. In fact, as I already said, most things in your list ARE my stylistic choices. I didn't make that many mistakes even back in 2012, and back then I didn't use robots or codes.

There's a lot of talking in this thread about what to do now that this category is at its limits, I'm just not 100% convinced it actually is.
That's just based on your feeling. You should know that SMB does have a limit, and right now, every time improvement could mean the very last. I have a bolder claim, that I'm now 100% convinced that it's not. How about that?

HappyLee, what I actually want to ask you is this. Imagine there IS some definition for individual level times. Just imagine everyone magically happened to agree on what it should be. Do you think there will be any new challenge in speeding individual levels up, or everything is already 100% known, just not used because of the framerules?
Everything is already 100% known. There won't be much of a challenge. I can optimize everything precisely in SMB if I want to (don't need exhaustive search robots to do that). I don't know if anyone remembers my first or second warpless run, back then I was proud of best individual time results, but over the years I got evolved, and find myself stupid back then. Why not make use of the framerule to make more entertaining runs? Does anyone prefer the time Mario staying in the castle doing nothing instead of maybe slowing down a bit to have some fun? If you really prefer Mario staying in the castle instead of real action, why not just watch Mario in the castle then, why watch a TAS? Most of the time, going for the fastest individual level solution is EASY, but to make full use of the framerule for maximum entertainment is HARD.

I'd go for "while the player has control", but I also agree that it's subjective and shaky.
If you prefer that, you should watch Phil & Genisto's warpless run. Basically Mario touches the flagpole as soon as possible for every stage. SMB doesn't have "in-game time" recorded. Instead, it has framerules. So why disregard the framerule and seek for clearly less entertaining runs? Weatherton made it sound like MrWint's run was optimized than mine, but that's not the case. The truth is that he made it looks like a competition for level time while it's actually meaningless because of the framerule.

I much prefer seeing how fast each individual level can be performed and would prefer a run that completes a level faster but ends up having to "wait" a few frames longer at the end. To me, a better run is one that completes each level faster, even if that means waiting a tiny bit at the end. This keeps the competition going even when the pesky frame rule means the overall movie may be exactly the same length.
What matters the most in a TAS is overall movie length, secondly, overall entertainment. To me, speed competition or even subpixel competition in individual levels doesn't make any sense because of the frame rule. If that's what you really prefer, you probably wouldn't see cool things like 1-3, 3-3 and 5-3 ground clip or any other cool things, but end up just like a movie made by ROBOTS.

If you think I miscategorized some of these though or you wonder how I got to these numbers, please let me know, I'm happy to correct the submission text or explain it in more detail.
I guess you didn't know what I mean... I have to explain it in detail. For example, I intentionally slowed down at "1-2 initial speed-up" for hitting the mushroom block (which you don't need to in this movie). I intentionally stayed longer in the pipe during the pipe glitch in 3-1 as a stylistic choice, similarly for the 2-1 pipe clip. The way I do 3-2 floor clip and 7-1 pipe clips is also a stylistic choice. 2-3 and 7-3 floor clips has to do with the Cheep-cheep. Maybe you got better "8-2 Bullet Bill luck" but I got clearly more entertaining 8-2 as a whole. "8-4 wall clip pipe entry", I just wanted to slow down before entering the pipe. Why do I have to go full speed before entering a pipe? "8-4 turn-around pipe entry", obviously you were copying my movements from the "maximum coins" TAS or something. As for "2-2 whirlpool alignment", I didn't know it back in 2012, but who really cares? Doesn't save a frame or look like anything else. In short, I didn't make that many mistakes during my last warpless run in 2012, but your submission text made it looks like that I had made plenty of mistakes. It's not fair to compare stylistic choices with maximum horizontal positions search. Nobody really cares for "0.125 frames" or something.

Please don't get me wrong (I have trouble expressing in English sometimes). I think the submission text is very well written and detailed and can be a wonderful contribute to our SMB resources page which I've been too lazy and too weak in English to edit, except of the fact that it lacks the real keys to solve the 1-4 and 4-4 puzzles, which I think are small but of great importance. About your tools, I find them new and greatly intelligent, and potentially extremely useful for other projects that lack optimization. I just don't find it very useful for SMB warpless project, since judging from the result, the only new improvement it brought was 4-4, which is very impressive to TASers like me, Mars608 and chatterbox but probably indifferent to others because the movements look almost exactly the same. By the way, I find "List of movement optimizations" from the submission text somewhat laughable and very misleading to others, because my goal wasn't achieving the fastest time in every stage or in every movement, but was to achieve maximum entertainment during my last warpless TAS. So it's not fair to compare something I deliberately slowed down for entertainment to something that only seeks horizontal positions and call them "optimizations", because most of the times, they're not.

I actually do explain that you need to keep running speed while collecting the fireflower, and I also mentioned you discovered it independently of me (in case you don't believe me, I submitted the exact 1-4 inputs used in this run to GitHub weeks before your submission of the "all items" TAS). I understand how it feels to you like I stole your discovery here, but that's not what happened.
That's not what I meant. I meant you missed the real key for the movement in 1-4 to be successful in your very detailed submission text, also the real key for solving the 4-4 puzzle which is jumping earlier in the wall. But I don't blame you, for you've solved those with a bot. What's really hard is to solve those with pure imagination and reasoning, which is exactly what Mars608 did, so that's why I think he deserves some credits.

First of all, I'm happy to join you with your project to create an even better warpless TAS, but only if I actually can be helpful in the creation of whatever is left to do. I have already created the tools necessary to do precise optimizations, and I can apply them in furtherance of your project. It feels disingenuous to just join your project without actually contributing, maybe just to get this my submission out of the way of yours.
As I said, Mars608 and I had already finished planning and testing almost everything, so what's left to do is simply making every stage as perfectly as possible, which I think is not your strength since you didn't do it in this run. To be honest, I don't find your tools very useful in this project except solving the 4-4 puzzle. Most things you've explained in your submission text was already known back in 2012, and all of it except the 4-4 improvement was known to me and Mars608 by the time we were testing this run while making "all items" TAS. Your tools can be very much useful in other projects like Extra Mario Bros boss fights and Hard Relay Mario, and other games like SMB3, but I think for this project we don't need further use of it as we can do even better through our own imagination and reasoning. Hmm, that is an interesting proposition, but I'm a little conflicted about this. I understand that this is a huge bummer for your project, and I sincerely hoped you would've had some improvements to just beat out my run. The way I imagined it would go after reading the comment in the "all items" TAS where you stated that the project is only progressing slowly, but you hinted at improvements I didn't know about, is that I'll just finish up my submission asap, possibly allowing you to incorporate the 4-4 improvement without too much backtracking, and you submit whenever you'll be ready, everyone it happy. The situation we're now in is really unfortunate, but you also need to look at it from my perspective, I worked on this run for the past year, leading up to this submission, and just backing down and effectively throwing this away for a mention in a run that may have none of my inputs and work I put into it in it, for an unclear benefit to the end product, is hard to accept. I guess I'll need to think about this some more, how we can solve this unfortunate situation in a satisfactory way.
Doesn't have to be a conflicted situation. I've been working on the warpless run for 10 years, and as I said before, this is the project I value the most. I pretty much came up with all improvements by myself, and before I got involved with SMB warpless, they didn't even have flagpole glitch in the run yet. What you didn't mention in the submission text is that the 1-4 route won't save time without the little trick of getting the Fireflower in 25 speed found by Mars608 and first shown in our "all items" TAS. This is small but greatly important, so I can't believe that it's not mentioned in your well-detailed submission text. Actually it was first found in our new warpless project which had already started after I found the first time improvement. Technically, we can submit a TAS right now with equal time but A LOT more entertaining, since Mars608 has already finished it in his way a week ago. Where would we be then? Then your work would become mostly an improvement in 4-4, which looks almost exactly like the same movement as my last run. But I don't want that, since we've always had a larger goal in mind. We understand that your goal is to pursuit for the time limit, but our goal is beyond that, which is to create a perfect run with maximum entertainment. Please seriously consider joining our project if you think our goal makes sense. If you choose not to, we would still respect your decision. Me and Mars608 will probably stick to our original plan in slow pace no matter what happens, and hopefully would make a perfect run someday.

I sorry to hear that, I didn't realize quite how far along you were as well. As I mentioned in the submission text, it was just bad timing and I didn't know you were working on it until 2 weeks ago. But there's something I don't understand, you're saying you would have submitted the same time as this run, but you didn't beat the 4-4 frame rule. Does that mean you have a frame rule improvement in a different level then? And can these be combined to create a run that uses both improvements for another 21 frames saved? If that's the case, I didn't sink your run completely (which would be a relief), but merely threw it back since you need to go back and redo everything from 4-4 onwards, incorporating my improvement into your run. Also, can you elaborate on what you mean with the 6-4 firebar? It wasn't very memorable to me, so clearly I'm missing something.
Thanks for your reply, MrWint. It's a long story. In short, a Firebar in 6-4 can get in your way sometimes and kill 21 frames. It happens if you enter 6-4 a framerule eariler or a framerule later (how coincident is that!), and it's just unavoidable. I'm happy to send you our WIPs and explain our plans and thoughts on SMB warpless project in details if you're really interested. If this run gets published, it would definitely sink our project because the unavoidable Firebar in 6-4 forbids us to make further time improvements, unless we find another time improvement, which is highly impossible as it's probably the very limit of SMB warpless TAS. Me and Mars608 would be really happy if you would join our project as a third author, so that our new warpless project would be more perfect even though the time wouldn't be improved due to 6-4 Firebar. Although I'm sorry to say, that your excellent 4-4 improvement might not be included in, unless we figure out an even better entertainment choice than my WIP spoiler. I mean, there could be a better place to waste 21 frames on. This can be discussed later.

Link to video If anyone's interested, this would be how 4-4 look like in our warpless TAS. Would be fun if people see this in a 18:37.46 run instead of a spoiler of a WIP. This could be a spoiler or the end of this project. Knowing MrWint's new 4-4 improvement, I would probably still do the same with 4-4 simply because it's more entertaining.

Wow, this one's totally unexpected. Mars608 just told me that someone broke the 4-4 framerule, and I said "What? I just tested that a week ago." And I watched 4-4 and just learned that it's possible to jump early in the wall so Mario can land a frame earlier. Why didn't I think of that? Congratulations on solving the 4-4 puzzle that me and Mars608 didn't solve. Too bad that the time me and Mars608 were going to submit is exactly the same as yours, 18:37.46. Mars608 has finished everything including the hardest parts like 7-1, getting 7-3 Cheep-cheep and manipulating 8-2 Bullet Bill a week ago. He respected me and let me move on with my slow pace. I told him that I need time to make every stage perfect, to make a perfect warpless TAS as it will probably be the last. If Mars608 were the project manager, he would most likely have submitted the same time result even before "all items" TAS but in higher quality. But he respected me with my slow pace. And I couldn't imagine that my slow pace could completely ruin our project which was already 2/3 done. Months of work now ruined because it won't matter with a tied run in time. Yes, there's one more improvement that you didn't calculate, MrWint. An improvement I thought probably the most incredible improvement in SMB TASing. So why couldn't this time (18:37.46) be improved? Damn unavoidable 6-4 Firebar!

Noob question: What was that hidden "empty" block in 6-1?
That's a hidden coin block. There are others like the 4 hidden coins under the vine in 4-2.

Dear HappyLee: There are other games out there, you know :p
I guess I‘m too old for new games. I don't really play games anymore. Probably will try Metal Slug TASing if someone improves Arcade emulators for TASing.

Something to add: * I think the most impressive thing about this goal is that it's actually possible to get all items in SMB without dying once. The one item with difficulty in real time is the Fire Flower in 4-1. * Mars608 came up with this project and finished most of the stages by himself. There were several times when improvements were found in previous stages and he had to re-do some stages with random enemies. His ultra-high efficiency of making TAS really impresses me. * Me and Mars608 have also been working on a new warpless TAS, which is in relatively slow pace compared to this project. There are spoilers like 1-4 and 2-2 corner clip that were found first in our warpless project. * Some frame rules are pretty hard to save, including 1-2, 1-4, 2-4, 3-3, 4-1, 4-3, 5-2, 6-4, but we've managed to save them anyway. * Hope this project brings more joy to SMB fans and fewer headaches to our beloved judges.

Cool! I haven't considered that the current warpless run could be improved (considering how you are expert on SMB).
I hadn't either, a few days ago, since the current warpless run is really optimized. The improvements probably wouldn't be mind-blowing in common sense, but they are to me. Will work hard on the new run with Mars608. :)

Some exciting discoveries recently. After 6 years, you'll see a new SMB warpless run in 2018. It's been the project I value the most.

Very cool glitches, both of the above! About the Message Box Glitch, can it be used in 96-exit TAS? Does it count as 2 exits (DP3 and Yellow Switch Palace) at the same time?

Crazy run! This is so different from a regular Mega Man TAS. Really enjoyed watching it, even though I have no idea what's it like to play it in real time...

It seems to me that in a few levels there were sections done faster by HappyLee and sections done faster by MrWint. Combining them, could a frame rule be beaten?
Of course not. I don't believe it's possible. Every slow-down in my run was intended, mainly for entertainment.
