I was gonna rant about how I have a WIP which finishes stage 1 - 1 something like 15 frames faster but HOLY FUCK YOU BROKE THE FUCKING GAME! And don't tell me it was like that when you got there. Yes vote for broken reasons.
...wait, you beat 1-1 15 frames faster? How the hell? We've steadily improved that over time. The latest version is 2 frames faster than the last WIP Tiger- did and we figured that was as fast as we can get it.

You know, GTimeKiller is really good at motivating people to finish their projects. He did Hagane, which prompted Tiger and I to work together and finish it. Then he did Alien Soldier and now you've finished this. This guy has some sort of amazing super power. He's indirectly influenced a lot of great stuff.

The 109 frame improvement is still an improvement. The other one that I thought might be faster wasn't. Tiger's working on the last boss now. He did a better job with it than I did. He's very talented at exploiting wall glitches.

The last two bosses are super annoying. We actually finished and then I realize a bad choice on my part for the second last boss, and fix it to save 109 frames. Then I find another improvement to make. (Edit: Which turns out not to be an improvement. Heh.) That's just that boss. The last boss is an absolute nightmare to optimize. Eight targets, each with their own HP address and each with their own invincibility frames, on a level that scrolls with or without you. It's hard enough optimizing movement through a stage, and optimizing a boss. Doing both at the same time is ridiculous. Every move you make either allows you to stay in pace with the boss or allows you to deal damage with it, so you're constantly having to figure out which sacrifice is the best one to make. Tiger and I have been passing it back and forth like crazy, trying to work out the best way to do it and then I find out we have to do it over again because of a trick to use against the boss right before. Argh! :p

World 4 is officially done. That leaves 5. Just one left. Are you guys as excited as I am? Edit: If you're curious, we're now ahead by 5240 frames.

Hate to rag on a guy for putting so much effort into making a commentary video, but after skipping the intro, I watched up until: "This is a tool-assisted speedrun. Nothing really... um, basic, it's just basically some kind of, like uh.... Tool-assisted speedruns are like... basically..." A pet peeve of mine is people using the same words repeatedly and basically just repeating a lot of repetitive words... basically being repetitive.

Minor update: We're done world 3. 3740 frames faster than GTimeKiller. Not as dramatic a difference from the last world, but world 3 contains two autoscrolling levels, where the only way to save frames is to touch the boundary of the right screen at the end of 3-4 as quickly as possible. Lag is not a factor in these levels as even with sprites all over the screen, they still end on exactly the same frame as if I kill everything right away. Keeping that in mind, I made sure to put on a show for you guys. Can't wait to show everyone our finished version.

Would someone want to watch someone playing through 255 levels?

Yeah, but that's how the game is designed. I'm talking about taking a game beyond what the developers intended just to make it as truly difficult as possible.

In a TAS, though, that would still be trivial. The fastest guns in the game are in fact pistols (because the firing rate only depends on how fast you hit the trigger, whereas the machine guns have a set firing rate). Even on a console, if you play with the slow motion feature and give the computer players an RCP, you can squeeze off all 8 bullets of your Falcon 2 in the time it takes them to fire off two to three rounds. Even with Dark Sims, you can manipulate the sims to attack you one at a time, and force their shots to miss, while you peg them with two ridiculously fast Magsecs as they struggle with their double cyclones. Although, since Perfect Dark is highly customizable, you can stack the odds even more heavily against you. Use seven Dark Sims, all on the same team against you. King of the Hill or Capture the Briefcase, so the only way to win is to protect an area of the map (otherwise all you have to do is stay one kill ahead of them, which is easy if you have explosives and they outnumber you. Pointing a rocket launcher at the floor and blowing yourself up is likely to take out at least one of the others). Add shields.

There are lots of runs that take a really tough game and make them look easy, but an idea came to me today: What about making a game absolutely impossible? There are some conventionally impossible games like Dragon's Lair and Takeshi no Chousenjou that have already been TASed, but even games as tough as that are trivial when you can do everything with frame-precise accuracy. So, what do I mean by making a game impossible? I mean, take a game that has a lot of customizable difficulty or gameplay options to ramp up the difficulty to something that the developers never actually expected people would actually try because it's ludicrously difficult. Example: If you play Dr. Mario in Tetris & Dr. Mario for SNES, you can play any level from 1 to 20. Level 20 is absolutely trivial for a TAS. But you can also compete against a computer opponent. So what if you set yourself to level 20 and set the computer to level 1? There should be no way you can beat that. The opponent can clear those four viruses away pretty easily, no matter how fast you churn through yours. But if you can luck manipulate and keep unleashing combos that screw up your opponent, even that might be possible. Any thoughts on highly customizable games that can be manipulated this way? Would this make for an entertaining run?

I'm temporarily abstaining from voting. Right now my vote is a tentative yes. It was definitely entertaining. What makes me reluctant, however, is that you have less than 2000 rerecords for a 20-minute plus run. Some parts look like they might be unoptimized but it's impossible to tell because I'm not familiar with the game and how the weapons work to tell if certain delays are important or necessary. The notes given in the submission are helpful. More description might have helped. I'm going to look into it a bit more before I give my final vote, though. All-in-all it looks pretty good. Really, it's just the 1925 rerecord count that makes me feel like something doesn't add up. I can easily go through that many rerecords doing a single level of a different game.

Update: We're done world 2 and starting on 3. We're currently 3248 frames ahead of GTimekiller's submission.

Is there a different port of this game that would make for a better TAS? I know in the Commodore version there was an additional weapon. It was a gun that you would hide in a room and attach a trip wire to a doorknob. When the other spy would open the door, it would blast him. Sort of an alternative to the bucket. It doesn't really have any speed value, but it might make for a more entertaining run since you'd have one more alternative to the same few weapons.

I sent a PM about this but I don't know if Bisqwit got it. All of my submissions are uploaded under my preferred username, Heisanevilgenius. I just wanted to change my forum username to reflect this.

Tiger- and I are now working on this game. Currently we have completed up to the boss at 2-1. Thanks to some all-around optimizations and a new glitch Tiger- has discovered, we are presently 1820 frames faster than the same point in this submission.

Good news. Tiger- and I have officially joined forces to TAS Hagane. We've already found a way to improve 1-1 by 2 frames and because of the cool glitch Tiger- has discovered, there'll probably be a huge improvement to the subsequent stages as well.
