Well, I remember doing it a while back, but going by every other thing I thought I found that I thought was knew, this was probably found by someone else already too.
I watched you TASing on stream the other day, the speed at which you do it is mind-blowing, keep up the good work!
>apparently
eheheheh.
Yeah, this is rubbish, but that's the point, this guy was just messing around.
I showed this to the mkdd pros on the pp forum, I've been told that many of the splits are slower than the champ's best splits, but a notable time is MB lap 2, which smashes the wr by 0.4 even without a shroom.
I'm really surprised by how quickly an mt can be charged compared to the fastest a human can do, and it's for this reason that it can save so much time.
WIP is amazing! I loved cloud spires superglide and sgt. byrd eggs, and no glaring errors stuck out. Look forward to seeing more :)
P.s. Glad you found that little backwards skip in cloud spires too :D (avoiding moneybags)
It's bloody hard to optimise, and most of the people who are really interested in this game prefer playing regularly, and also wouldn't stand for anything less than perfect.
Michael Fried has done a lot of non-sc TASes, don't know if anyone has linked to them before but they're on his site wrvids.com (but iirc he said a while back that he didn't really want to do it again as it's such hard work).
If anyone happens to want to have a go, probably best to look at this thread. Fried links to his TASes, as well as explains how to do an mt frame perfectly.
P.s. There's no point in asking DaBlackBoi1 to do it, he barely understands the game and wouldn't do a full TAS full justice (also he tried to join the site with times he got using tools on an emulator, so I automatically dislike him).
Yes, but this TAS is 2 years old and many many new strats were found when speedrunning of this game was picked up actively soon after it was published, so this really isn't surprising at all.
Ah I see about the '06, I just interpreted it the same way Touval did.
It's cool that time is being saved (though shame the cool any% skips from Gnorc Cove and Twilight Harbor are gone, I love those levels :(), I wasn't saying that.
The nitpicking I'm doing is pointing out that all that Spike wrote is irrelevant - it implies the new discovery makes a change to a route, then spells it out, but all he really did is make the basic requirements for progression in the game that any person who'd played it would know sound interesting.
Yeah, I was in a bad mood at the time! :P
Well duh, this find (that is old according to one of the comments) makes no difference for the routing for most of the game, only skips two levels that could be completed super quick anyway.
Great news! Very happy to hear you're redoing the beginning rather than just resyncing it. Restarting a TAS so much is demotivating, but so worth it when the finished product is better because of developed knowledge of the emulator and game :)
Huh, cool, thanks for the video... :P
Seeing that jumping when not in a charge is better is surprising to me, I would've thought that covering more distance in the same time would mean that spyro is at a greater height when he reaches the edge, but apparently games don't like to conform to normal laws of physics!
:( Would've been nice to have it there for historical purposes, i.e. have the 'this run obsoletes this run by ___', but if you don't want to bother going down that route then obviously I won't, as if I'd try to do it it'd only be with your permission.
Good to hear that you want to redo the any% soon, good luck with it :)
Edit: Really? When I tried this extensively a while ago I found that there was an invisible wall that I couldn't surpass, even though the height seemed fine. Or possibly instead I felt that the hover at the end of a glide is limited to the maximum height at the start of the glide?
Could you possibly try again and show us?
Yessssssssssssssss! Awesome! Thanks to Hyperbug if it was him, or who else got it fixed, this is fantastic news.
So, you said your run desynced on the new emulator, so I assume mine and matt's any% will do the same? If by some miracle it does sync, maybe the site mods would take pity on us and publish our TAS, even if it unfortunately if it is rather largely outdated strat-wise now...
Very nice. I really enjoyed watching this, and it's great to see someone working on this category!
With a category as long as this, it would be folly to expect extreme optimisation, but the only thing that made me cringe a little too much was the skateboarding, which while has some really nice tricks and strats, I don't think was quite up to scratch. For example, many of the blue ramp lizards you can get without getting stuck into that high jump, and if you sort of lean into the wall on the blue ramp at the top of the map, you can save a bit too. Furthermore, I'm thinking possssibly that jumping while turning is quicker, so you turn a little more sharply (in a similar manner to the spyro sections).
Here's my old TAS WIP, a rubbish route that including the skating eggs :P (skating at 1:30)

Alright, thanks for the reply.
Loving all the discussion here, I look forward to seeing whatever progress is made after Bizhawk incorporates Playstation :)
Nice, but why do you get any time boxes at all? Can't you just use that wallriding technique all the way?
Or actually, is the ingame timer very close to the limit at which you get gold relic, which is needed for 105% completion?
Edit: Got off my metaphorical lazy arse and checked myself: gold is 27:80, and you only need gold for 105%.
So there must be a place where you could miss another 3 seconds worth of time boxes and save more real time by doing more wallriding I'm sure.
Edit2: Huh, after all that you already knew yourself, haha: " Improvements:
I know the first 2 second box is not needed so that would make my time 26"xx
If you can point something out please do."
You could also miss out another box I reckon, with more optimization, and that 1-2 seconds space on the ingame timer.
Not much point. A TAS of this game is extremely hard to optimise, and the best that has been made is by David on rMC3, the simplest course. Things such as 100% or any% don't really exist in this game. You could start off from a new save file and go through all the cups several times, changing vehicles as you unlock them, but that'd be pretty boring, because firstly you'd have to tt every course to unlock everything, and even in the races against CPUs you'd just be manipulating the best item at the start and then tt'ing as usual, manipulating the cpu items so that you don't get a blue.
Basically, things are best as they are, with tasers doing track by track.
If you guys are ever in need of a more accurate map for two very close alternative routes, I recommend, if possible, to swim in the air up high and and then taking a nice accurate screenshot.
I'm not really sure if the CPUs or item boxes can be manipulated so that you can get shrooms/cpus don't get blues/shocks/pows/reds, but if they can, then this might be useful:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw_dChnMETI
But then again, I don't think that any hacks would be allowed during the making of the run (so let's have some blue mts please, not green ;)), so this could be useful just for pre-run testing.
But whatever happens, I'm really looking forward to this, as far as I know no-ones ever done a VS. race TAS, so this could be fun :)
To determine the fastest position (i.e. 3rd or 4th) that you can get a certain item, make sure to refer to this:
Re-re-fixed.
I really enjoyed this freerun. I always find it more enjoyable when I don't glance at the timer of the video, so I expect they're about to grab the star, but instead they go and pull off another death glitch which I've never seen before!
I remember there being another no A run recently, did this beat that or what?
idk, but it dosen't beat the game, so there's good reason for it not to be published.
is that really such a strict rule?
Yep, I can tell you that from experience - even when a game has been 99% TASed, it's still not eligible for publishing.
I really enjoyed watching that video while eating my lunch, it'd be great to see some other later levels such as TTC (jk) done without the A button too, for me it's a very entertaining category, as often I have no clue what they're going to do next, a thing that unfortunate slightly begins to lack with the more normal routes (not that it takes much away from their entertainment at all really) :)
:( Oh well, thanks to everyone who watched the run and voted on it, and I hope you enjoyed it :)
Edit: Just read Mothrayas' note, thanks for considering and explaining why it couldn't be accepted.
All in all, although it's annoying it can't be published because of this little problem, I'm still happy to have made the TAS, and perhaps get resubmitted in the future if a workaround is indeed found.
It was a pleasure tasing with you. I hope in the next few years psx-jin will get better emulation.
As I with you, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience :)
@Spikestuff, according to Crash, the PAL version emulates even worse, and crashes upon attempting to enter Cloud Spires.
