I noticed that this run didn't keep the previous run's star. I thought that was automatic now, so I guess it's just been removed manually. I think it's a bummer, I've always thought this was a great star candidate. Especially for me, Genisto's run was a very effective early movie for me to watch as a beginner to understand how different a TAS could be from normal play. Anyway, thanks for the quick publication. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't surprised.

I think it's cool that the Castlevania game, despite running independently from an emulator, still used my joystick. Normally games don't bother with that, and so I, in turn, don't bother with them.

Yeah, who would have expected that in a thread who's first sentence was "Does anyone have a hidden obsession with certain video game characters?"

The way you finish one lap affects the start of the next lap. So when the laps are so tiny, it makes sense that they won't all be the same time, and when walls are hit, it makes sense that they won't continually get faster.

My point was just that, in previous versions, I was told by you that the appeal of this run was: "This movie beats the game as fast as possible with the best possible conditions you can get and this is the point of this movie. It's absolutely frame-perfect and I took very much effort for it." By putting as much emphasis on "frame-perfect" as you do, I don't see why this exception is made. I just don't agree with that decision.

Can't nobody take my pride Can't nobody hold me down, oh no I got to keep on movin' Do you know if all the strategies used here are possible on SNES9x 1.43? Or do some have benefits from different timing between the emulator versions? (A simple yes/no will do; no evidence is necessary. Just treat it like any other claim you make.)

Of the different game types, only the horse-scenes seemed to drag on for me. It helped that the most interesting mode is also the most commonly used. The speed potions brought a nice element to the run. What would have been cool is if in the overhead scenes, all four players could be controlled. A decent run. My vote is a slight yes.

Don't believe these guys; I'm very lazy. Also, if I were in charge of the site, it would have crumbled long ago. (JXQ does not mix well with privileges of authority) S3R14L-X, does your name stand for anything? (I just realized it was some number-for-letter thing. I lose)

I've never cared much for this concept. Starting with perfect stats just rubs me the wrong way. I have 1 question though: How much time does replacing Crono's name with Satur take? It seems counteractive to me to cut frames everywhere else, but use time here.

I doubt that this obsession is hidden, but Samus has nothing on Kitana in my eyes. I like the pics from Metroid Fusion's ending better than Zero Mission's, anyway. That video was amazing in every way imaginable. Fourth sentence on its own line!

The good: A very non-linear game with some physics abuse and decent speed. The route seems fairly solid at first watch. The bad: The music in this game is awful. The only part I didn't dislike was the death jingle. Revisiting areas got kind of old. The music sucked. Lots of menu entering. Pausing and laughing for 10 years after hitting that thing with a pointed stick. Bad music. The vote: meh.

Yes, because of 360 degree analog movement, enemies, and goals.

I think if this run aims for entertainment, then it should not use a password to skip a lot of the game, and it should not aim so primarily for speed either. However I probably would not even be that entertained by that, as MM3 is probably my least favorite of the series.

That turbo-camera example is what I was referring to as a comparison to wobbling in a 3D game. It looks really bad. So...will this run aim to obsolete the current published run?

I think it would be neat to just play some of the lag-prone NES games without lag. (Blaster Master and Kirby's Adventure, for example)

I must have really struck a chord for you to just come out insulting like that. "Quoting" heresay from Bisqwit is not a strong retort to the rules of the site. Your statements about the posts in this thread are correct; both sides are represented. But the majority is clear, perhaps just not to you. Or perhaps you continue to rationalize away this majority with excuses like "those who don't like it haven't posted yet".

Please take care to not confuse the two. In the end, you will believe what you want, and so will I. But if you want to discuss things with logic and facts, you should stick to exactly that instead of producing heresay and insults when cornered.

I personally haven't been ignoring the people who have enjoyed the run, but you have to remember there ARE also people who enjoy the old run, and find it more entertaining. There are also more people that watch these runs, than there are who post in this forum (or in this thread). Also I think you will agree that this post has at times degenerated into a 'World vs Phil' style argument (again), which may or may not have skewed the general opinion in the thread. So we cannot conclusively say that your run is better based solely on that the people who have voiced their opinion in this thread.
This is EXACTLY the unfair treatment I'm talking about. Yes, Phil was heavily involved, and many disagreed with him. But for the most part, it was kept to the subject at hand - more so than past disputes. Both sides have good points, and both sides presented their take on things. This is a discussion, not an argument. Yes, there are people who haven't spoken yet. Do you assume they will all swing this thing in the other direction? Or is it a million times more probable that those who have spoken are a subset of this community that nearly accurately represents the community as a whole? Should we throw out every run's vote count and posts because there MIGHT be people who don't like it who haven't posted so yet?
BoltR wrote:
When it comes down to it, neither version is obvious better. Each has it's merits and flaws. This if we were going completely by the rules would, I suppose, get your run rejected.
No, it wouldn't. This submission is not breaking the rules. Please read this excerpt from the Rules, which I've stated several times: "If there is already a published video, do not use a different ROM than what it uses, unless the new movie is obviously better for reasons that are not only caused by the version change, or the ROM is superior (or a language change), and you can show how it should be compared to the existing movie."

Also, I'm sorry you feel that way, but if you are knowingly bending rules and stepping on people's toes and simply don't care. Isn't it a bit naive to not expect some sort of backlash?
  • This submission is within the rules at the time it was submitted.
  • I am not stepping on anyone's toes by demanding a fair discussion.
  • I did indeed expect backlash/controversy.
  • I did not expect judges and admin to look at sides of the discussion inequally.
In all seriousness, I ask you to please try not to ask me questions that will make me repeat myself again.

BoltR, my annoyance was never with whether the run would end up accepted/published or not, it was only in how the discussion was handled by Bisqwit and yourself in this thread. I've already addressed the specifics, and it just comes down to the fact that I feel treated unfairly. I can't speak for Cardboard, but the fact that I don't care about acceptance/publication is exactly why I didn't start a discussion beforehand asking if everyone thought the (U) version was ok because I really don't care if some people don't like it. If enough people don't like it, then it won't be published. That's fine, I still had fun doing the TAS. What I do care about is when those people who do like it are not taken as seriously as those who do not, and that definitely happened in this discussion.

JXQ, the run isn't just 'possibly going to be completed', it is something that WILL happen.
Give me a motherfucking break you ignorant ignorant IGNORANT person. We have a run to compare it to now, but no! We need to wait for a new submission (that, by the way, has no guarantee of being completed, despite your claim which is based on... oh what's it based on? That's right, not a damn thing) and compare it to that! I don't care about publication beyond the obsoletion message being present and correct, which is a very annoying thing around here to me. I do care that because Bisqwit likes it this certain way, things are delayed, reargued, reworded, and reasked over and over despite popular consensus, despite a judge's decision, and despite the fact that besides Phil, the movement to not have this obsolete the current run is close to nil. Yes, it's Bisqwit's site (please spare me that stupid fucking retort), but if we are led to believe that our opinion matters, when it ultimately does not, then that's just dishonest and hypocritical. I can repeat the same questions, too. How about this one: What kind of majority is needed to reach this "consensus" Bisqwit is waiting for?

BoltR: Waiting for another run to possibly be completed is a horrible decision. There is good discussion going on here; there's no reason to not let it take whatever course it may. I feel like the question of "which run would you prefer?" is simply getting reasked until the answer is the (J) version. The majority is clearly there, they've already answered this question, so why is this being delayed further?

I'm surprised that there are this many people who dislike our play-around time during explosions. We tried to make each level distinct without copying Genisto very much. Some of his were great, but some were not. The wobbling, 30hz fire, and just walk to the left are the ones I didn't like. In the (U) truck stages, there is not an ambush of four enemies at the beginning like the (J) version, so there are less targets to shoot at. We kept the rocket launcher for the second truck stage because it saved a couple frames to change later than to change then, and also to differentiate from the previous run's play. Speaking of truck stages, one nice advantage of the (U) version I'd like to point out that seems to be getting overlooked is not having to play the same truck stage back to back (and playing one less overall by skipping through it on the map). I really disliked what Genisto did in his final truck stage (walk forward and get hit a lot), but he most likely wanted to show something different than the previous truck stage which was only ten seconds earlier.
