Again, saying that someone shouldn't succumb to peer pressure is not an argument to invalidate its phenomena on a community.

Peer pressure will influence votes if they are public. To say that they won't is looking beyond human nature. To give an example of one person who won't change their rating is not an argument that holds water. If ratings are made public, they might as well just be removed, because they will be meaningless.

That seems to be a common mistake. I think people like X's at the end of words.

I would actually like to request that this topic be locked. If anyone really feels the need to talk to me about stuff like this, just PM me. I'm just another member of this site like all of you are, and chances are, you're pretty cool too. Lastly, please don't respond to any trolling for me. Responding to it myself in the past has never helped things, and so I would rather just leave it alone. Thank you.

Q: What's the deal with X? A: Just do Y. (Incorrectly implied: Wondering about X is no longer necessary) This is getting old.

"When there's not excitement, there's me and you. You. Listening to me." <3 Your microphone is fine, it picks up your voice well, and there isn't any background noise to speak of. If the "pops" from your P syllables or "wind" from breathier noises bother you, they can be stopped by a pop filter. However, you can make your own pop filter quite easily out of anything cloth that can be held in front of the microphone. For example, I once used a pair of shorts hung on a hanger and duct taped to the top of two pieces of furniture, and it worked quite well.

Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I downloaded the file and checked it out briefly. You can greatly reduce the size of the file by making it mono instead of stereo, and by lowering the bitrate from 128 kbps to something like 32 kbps (or maybe even 24 kbps). Voice doesn't need too high of a sampling rate to sound accurate. I think a program like Audacity has these capabilities (though if I'm wrong, someone else jump in and correct me).

Here's another:
Super Mario World (commonly abbreviated SMW) was the first launch game for the Nintendo Super Famicom/Super Nintendo Entertainment System game consoles. It was first released on November 21, 1990 in Japan, then in August 1991 in the US and lastly on 11 April 1992 in Europe. The game was produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, the music was composed by Koji Kondo, and the graphics were designed by Shigefumi Hino.
LOL!

My bad. Replace "published run" with "finished run". Same message, without the context of the site. Also, I'm going to guess that you think WIPs are just as (important / whatever word goes here that makes it clear for you that I'm not discussing site ranks) as finished runs. I do not think that. Ok, I'm bored with spam. Have fun!

"From the guy who hates ranks?" Not sure what this had to do with anything. It's more that I'm against thinking someone is better at something simply because they are female, so we should expect less. As if simultaneously TASing and possessing a vagina is worth a nobel prize. And I thought I was sexist. (I'm in a spammy mood tonight, so it looks like I'll fit right in!)

He didn't ask for the frames, he listed them. The process itself is what he was asking about.

There's a couple ways. The 25, 50, 70, 85 are the numbers to use if your first frame of pressing right or left is frame 0. Just count them as you advance frames. The second way is to use the memory watch function of SNES9x v9 (Cheat -> Search for cheats -> Watch button) to watch the address that contains the Speed Booster level. If you press on the correct frame, this value will increment. A third way is to study existing movies with controller input (comma) and frame counter (period) toggled on. After some success, you'll notice the animation frame that requires the press, and can somewhat use that as well. You can also thank laughing_gas for linking to a page that you have most likely read already. (He likes to do that.)

Just watched it. My opinion: Please stop the wobbling. The screen doesn't react to it nicely in this game. Donald's an amusing looking sprite and I'm sure there are much more pleasant looking ways to spend idle time.

Preface: I haven't watched this particular progress. I disagree that knowing the game can make up for confusing camera angles. I think the camerawork is very important to do well, especially in a game such as this one where the camera was not programmed perfectly (which isn't a surprise since this was one of the first games of its kind). I think TAS-like camera movements are a generally bad idea. A very close camera where Mario takes up 70% of the screen while he is running is just a slap in the face to the audience. A fast moving camera is the 3D version of wobbling, except instead of just a sprite being affected, it's the entire screen. Bleck.

You have 15 pans at the end of this game! That's way more than my kitchen. The only thing about the run (game) that I didn't like was how slow taking damage was. Even when it is optimal, it doesn't look optimal just cuz it's so...lame looking, I guess. Anyway, well done. Hoping to see more from you Z!

Your reasons for why this is a good TAS are either pointed out as typical bad reasons in the submission instructions, or I would guess that they aren't shared by a non-hardcore Mario Kart 64 player/watcher. One appealing part of a TAS is to show things that are not possible on a console. A different, slightly faster number is boring to an average viewer, even if a hardcore fan is interested in what that time is. The best part of existing Mario Kart 64 TASing is the use of shortcuts that are unreliable / near impossible in real time. This submission does not contain that appeal.

I am curious to know the origin for the rule about not changing versions.
If there is already a published video, do not use a different ROM than what it uses, unless the new movie is obviously better for reasons that are not only caused by the version change
What I understand from this sentence is that the new "obviously better" movie should be better for reasons other than a version change, which can only mean an improvement that is possible on both versions. This essentially says that changing versions is okay as long as there is an improvement, after version differences are removed. This submission meets that qualification.
or the ROM is superior (or a language change)
I'm not sure how a ROM can be superior, but this submission definitely qualifies as a language change.
and you can show how it should be compared to the existing movie.
We have done this in the submission text, and in great deal on the corresponding spreadsheet. Version changes have been allowed in many cases for different reasons:
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 - (J) to (U) - Gained time from the version switch.
  • Mega Man X2 - (U) to (J) - Gained time from the version switch.
  • Mega Man X2 - (J) to (U) - Lost time from the version switch (note that this is the exact same scenario as this submission).
  • Mega Man 3 - (U) to (J) - "The Japanese version was used because of a shorter intro screen."
  • Contra 2-player and pacifist - (U) to (J) - Gained time from the version switch, as well as more detailed graphics in some levels.
Other situations worth mentioning:
  • Rygar - The (E) version is used because a specific glitch works only on that version. This is mostly* comparable to passing through an enemy truck in the (U) version of Bionic Commando.
  • Blue Shadow - This game has been erroneously recorded at incorrect speeds through several improvements. I believe the stigma and rule against version changes is responsible for this error being continued through several versions.
It's not like Cardboard and I are trying to deceive anyone with a version switch. All the necessary information is in our submission text, breaking the game into many many parts and classifying each difference into an appropriate category. It's also not like we have hardly improved the movie - we are 25 seconds faster in the levels and 30 seconds faster with the route. This is a significant improvement. The former, except for a very small percentage (estimated as 60 to 90 frames), is possible on both versions of the ROM. The latter, is an unexpected and entertaining improvement indirectly due to the version switch. These improvements are offset by the version difference of slower scrolling text, which is readable, and sometimes worded in a humorous way. To reject this submission in favor of the previous version would be against the rules, but more importantly, it would be against the philosophy of the site to produce entertaining movies. *It is most likely possible to do enough setup to produce the glitch on the (J) version, however not without losing more time than will be gained.
