If Tub's idea is implemented some day (I realize it would be a good amount of work), I believe the site would benefit greatly from it. Then we would be back to the original site vision of "any entertaining run goes", instead of worrying about existing movies of the same game, or other similar situations. It could increase the amount of worthwhile content and morale of those thinking outside the (tool-assisted) speedrunning box.

Only the author or a judge/publisher can do that, by editing the submission.

I didn't think Knuckles played the Doomsday Zone (or Death Egg Zone) even if he had all the Super Emeralds.

I've never TAS'd Mega Man, but I would bet that if you had to manipulate three big items drops within the spam of about 40 frames (like in v7 I think), each having a 2% (again I could be wrong) chance of appearing, the fun part of TASing would take a backseat to your ever-increasing rage. I see building a bot like hiring a big mobster for your TAS. "Oh you won't give me what I want? Well, I'd like you to get acquainted with this bot I have here. I think you'll get a long real well. I'll be back in eight to ten hours to see if you've changed your mind."

Alrighty, I'm at the final battle. But it's way too late to finish tonight, so I'll wrap it up tomorrow after work. We'll see if someone sneaks in 1337 before then. I personally don't care :P

It seems strange to me to submit a run if you are still trying to improve it.

I don't like this game, but a TAS is far from trivial, much farther from it than I thought before watching. Not the most entertaining, but I wasn't bored either. Level 6 was pretty cool, and the rope skipping in Level 4 was neat.

This would mean Top Gear, and F-zero shouldn't fall into concept demo's (if you want to make them easy to find).
I don't think this is a bad thing (perhaps you don't either, I can't really tell from your post). Excitebike was just one track at first and it was on the NES page list. I also agree with Phil's point about the bi-game movie, which actually goes against what I said earlier about classifying games by system. Sigh, so confusing... When reading Tub's post, I first thought he meant for each game to have a seperate page, like SDA, which I thought was a bad idea. But after looking at his example screenshot, it actually keeps the main system movie pages intact, reduces clutter, and improves clarity. Overall I think it's an excellent idea.

I admit this wasn't as cool as I thought it would be. The waits were excessive, especially in a couple rounds where you selected Johnny Cage first, but didn't set up the glitch. The secret characters weren't that great because you can't throw projectiles at them or do fatalities on them. I really enjoyed the 2-player match, though. Overall, surprisingly, I liked the currently published movie better.

I see now why Bisqwit chooses to not explicitly define a concept demo. It stops people later from saying "This falls into a concept demo so it should be published, despite the fact that its boring". However, one thing I realized last night thinking about this situation that I haven't brought up is the inherent confusion in just having the category to begin with. What I mean is this: say someone finds our site and says "I'd like to see if they have a movie for my favorite game, F-Zero." That was an SNES game, and since the other categories are listed by system, that would be the instinctive place to check first. Alas, no run exists. The other choices on the main menu divide games by systems, where the "Concept demos" divides them by their goals, and does so very open-endedly. Some of the concept demos have the "Is a demonstration" category. My idea is to use that category on the runs that are less "clean", and do away with the seperate section. (Or, keep it for hacks. I realize that a hack is still for a system, however, a hacked game is much more clearly defined, and I believe people will see the menu and know that if a game is hacked, it may be in a special place.)

Although you have the most complaints about the "concept demo" definition, I have not seen one idea from you which you believe best defines a concept demo.

It takes those who are in charge of maintaining the movies to define what it is - not anyone else, including me, the passive-aggressive complainer, or you, the one who is trying to speak in Bisqwit's absence - otherwise circular discussion will (and did) occur.

This attitude bothers me. It gives off the message of 'any arguing is bad arguing, and I'm above that and so much more mature than those involved that I'll make comments toward them' message, which is passive aggressive itself, but worse, hypocritical. Aside from that, I hope you had fun with your post. It was fun to read.

What was wrong with my attempted definition (at the end of page 5)? That seems to be the only obvious pattern followed by the movies that are already in that section.
My point has been that all of us can throw in our perceived definitions, and all it does is clutter things up without getting to the root of the confusion.

Yeah, don't bring light to the issue, because then you're a lousy no-good complainer who's flaming the forums. Instead, sidestep it, and hope it goes away. Very effective.

I think I've come up with a faster route for the scavenger hunt, but before I really get into it I'd like to see what others think of it. After getting the Crush Boots:
  • Save below Entrance A</strike>
  • Get floodgate key [*]Quicksave/Reset (this reset does save one second from just traveling back up the passage) only in regards to previous route
  • Crouch Warp to Cavern A
  • Save in Cavern A
  • Use floodgate key
  • QuickSave/Reset (to Cavern A save)
  • Kill Death
  • Get Super Jump
  • Quicksave/Reset (Getting the Rib is moved for later, so I can save in Cavern B now, avoiding two warp sequences)
  • Warp to Cavern B
  • Save in Cavern B
  • Ger heart
  • Kill Shadow
  • Quicksave/Reset
  • Crouch Warp to Entrance B
  • Get Rib
  • Quicksave/Reset
  • Warp to Cavern A
  • Get Eye
  • Get Bracelet
  • Quicksave/Reset
  • Win

Growing up, I played games to beat them (I even kept a list of games that I had beaten!). The inherent challenge was to rent it on Friday and see if I could beat it by the time I returned it. Since finding this website, I've been able to seperate playing the game from beating the game almost completely. My realtime skills don't get the workout they once did, but I'm still able to compete with, for example, F-Zero records I set when I was in my teens. Using an emulator automatically puts me in TAS mode, unless I deliberately want to play a game like Super Demo World. That's how I tend to "beat" games now. But if I pop in a console game now, I play around with no real intent of doing anything spectacular, and turn it off whenever I tire of it. (Super Mario Kart!) So you might say I'm experiencing the opposite of EscapePlan9.

Faxanadu has an animated gif screenshot! But for the most part I think this is a bad idea. I think it would be better to have several screenshots posted side by side, instead of animated gif's (Example). But that may clutter the movie pages.
