My motivation has been absent for a couple months. But when Kirbymuncher submitted his first run of this game, it got me thinking and wanting to try things with the game I was on-again, off-again with. But honestly, I don't really have a good excuse for what I'm about to say, except that my motivation was back and I was excited about that. Since I had a few free days, I've finished this run. I haven't mentioned it because I didn't expect to actually go anywhere with it. Yesterday I was on World 2, and today I was suddenly done. I even considered just not submitting the run, but I think that that would be worse when looking at the big picture. Kirbymuncher, I hope that you are not upset, as this was not my intent at all. I can tell you are dedicated to this project and you have definitely improved since your first submission. My run is surely not flawless and if you were interested in improving it, I would have no problems with that, and I could give you the information from my run (specifically, I have an Excel file containing the times of each room's exit so you could compare an improvement run to mine). Anyway, if anyone is upset, I really am sorry. But hopefully this isn't the big deal I'm thinking it is. Edit: You can find the submission here.

Are you talking about Balrog from SF2 USA or SF2 Japan? I don't recall any missiles... (Balrog from SF2 Japan is Vega from SF2 USA. Balrog from SF2 USA is M. Bison from SF2 Japan. I think.)

There's an emulator issue as well. If you make a savestate before the Bartzilla level, then replay the movie but turn Volume Envelope Height Reading on, there are some more sounds (but still no music).

Well at this point, this will certainly be moved, if not locked. So go for it!

You can't be rounding with fractions son!!! If you put just one more 3 on that decimal approximation of 5/6, you get 2664!!! THAT AINT YO CAKE PHILLIP!!!!!! ...ahem.. However, it's actually just a coincidence that Bisqwit's run * 5/6 (which would be NTSC -> PAL conversion, which is the opposite direction that is needed if any were needed for this run) is the same length as this submission (44:24).

Like moozooh explained, it's actually 1.5 minutes due to different ROM versions.
I couldn't find this explanation, but I think it's backwards. The movie's description says:
Note: Famtasia plays PAL games at NTSC speed, that is 16.7% too fast. Thus the AVI is significantly faster than the movie should actually be.
So the AVI Bisqwit did needs to be extended to 1.2 times its current length for fair comparison, and 53:17 X 1.2 = 1:03:56. Compared against this submission's 44:24, this is actually 19 minutes and 32 seconds faster than the published submission. I would say optimizing this strategy you might be able to push this run below 40 minutes.

Well, maybe I should put more blame on the followers.

This Gannon-ban nonsense is TSA getting on his high horse to belittle others because we don't obsess over which Zelda titles have plurals and which ones don't. As if he doesn't do that enough by making claims that he has beat any Zelda record that beats his (but won't submit the proof), and that some goof at Nintendo knew who he was, on and on and on. But, I can't blame him as much as his legions of followers for using the phrase enough to make it recognizable. Oh well, I'll blame him anyway, because he just bugs me.

Longer cutscenes.
Indeed, that's what made the Zelda 64 run so much fun to watch.

Zurreco, would you rather watch longer fights or longer cutscenes?

I love how people vote no on published submissions, with no post. I think I'll go vote in the 2004 election now.

I think UFO presents a new and better way to TAS this game, and not just because it's faster (although UFO could be over 20 seconds faster than Tornado over just the first world when optimized). Lag can be drastically reduced by destroying the right enemies as they appear on the screen, and bosses are relentlessly stomped. While the constant sound is somewhat annoying, the fact that Kirby is pink instead of tan I think is a plus. Of course, at over forty minutes, any spammed ability is going to get repetitive. But my main point is that the UFO power gives the entire aura of controlling the game rather than just playing it more than other powers do.

For what it's worth, I had no clue you were working on a normal run.

John Madden is the Jay-Z of football commentary. As in, he keeps getting a lot of money for what he does despite the fact that all he does is sputter nonsense.

Definitely improved. I can't tell if it's perfect without testing a lot myself, but it's definitely entertaining and polished enough to be publishable, in my opinion. 649 frames faster than my WIP at the end of World 1.

I believe this is the movie you're talking about: Click Another idea I had, watching your submission, was the possibility of re-sucking the UFO star you drop when you have to go down ladders. If this was possible, it would save a lot of time most likely.

It's not just horizontal speed that dictates which strategy is the best, it's also maneuverability, control, and strength against bosses. UFO has a speed of 640, compared to wheel's 1024 and tornado's 1024 (during its peak). However given the level design thus far, UFO almost always keeps up with Tornado, at least in the first world, and is much faster against bosses. His current UFO WIP is 201 frames faster than my Tornado WIP, and mine is much more tightly optimized by this point. Edit: I also think this strategy is cool because Kirby stays his normal pink color instead of the tan color that he normally gets when powered up.
