MPC (with ffdshow), what I use to watch all the AVI's I download here, did not play this file for me. It loaded it, detected its length (2:30 or so), and then just sat there and wouldn't play. I also have Quicktime Alternative installed, but I wouldn't think that should cause problems.

I worked on that for a bit, but couldn't find anything conclusive. I'm taking two different finishes of a level on the same frame with differing fadeout and comparing their memory...problem is, there are about 100 different variables that don't match, and most of them seem to fluctuate randomly. My guess is that it won't be figured out more than "make memory location 7##### equal or be near a certain number", with no definite idea on how to make it that number. It wouldn't solve the problem, just reduce some testing needed (i.e., one wouldn't have to play a level to the end to see if the fadeout works, rather, just keep an eye on this variable). But I'll work at it some more soon.

I actually didn't know of a second height, I just picked the lowest height I could use and still kill all the enemies (I also think I had to wait a frame to hit the larger enemy). I figured any higher jump would take time both before the shinespark and afterwards, falling to the floor for longer (although this would be minimal, maybe not even a frame, since my overall direction is to the right at that point).

I just love watching these bosses get demolished. And the way Juste has all sorts of very fast movements for different scenarios. This is making a great TAS.

Helpful memory addresses: 7E13E4 - Reports a value from 0 to 112. It's essentially the "P-Meter" of SMB3. Only increases when running at mid-speed. 7E007B - Horizontal velocity. Holy crap this is helpful. This oscillates between 47 and 49 for full running speed. 51 is top flying speed. Now you can just get this value correctly instead of testing flight to a nearby object multiple times. It is a signed value, but the memory watcher doesn't display signed values correctly, so running left gives you values in the 200s instead of negative numbers. Interestingly, this oscillating property is not only for running at top speed, but running at mid-speed, walking, and even swimming. 7E01F1 7E01F2 - Both of these values tend to go nuts whenever there is a frame of lag. Could be helpful in eliminating it. jimsfriend's latest image of VoB4 is now my desktop background.

I have to use that height in order to kill all four enemies during the shinespark.

I haven't watched this yet, but I'm guessing April Fools. Let's see if I'm right! Edit: Yay...or not so yay....I'm right!

Thanks GW, I'll add those changes in later tonight. I found a few useful memory locations for this game. Thanks to flagitious, for showing me that this tool exists in SNES9x. (Go to Cheat -> search for new cheat, and then select memory locations and click "Watch") 7E09DA, 7E09DC, 7E09DE These three locations (and probably a fourth nearby) tell the in game-timer, in frames, seconds, minutes. I figured this would be extremely useful for Saturn in particular, or anyone else optimizing to the in-game timer. 7E0F8D, 7E0F8C These locations are energy of an enemy in the room. More importantly, in a boss room, it is the boss's energy. This will help me out on the remaining bosses. I'll also add these to SuperMetroidTricks later.

Graveworm, you always win. :) I have no doubt you could obsolete my 100% run by 15 seconds or more. I also finally started Super Metroid Tricks, for anyone interested in how some of the glitches work.

That room at the top of the Wrecked Ship was almost an accident; I was trying to get something to open the door after I hit it, like the door on the left side, but the beam was too slow and the Super Missles were way too fast. I never knew that regular Missles kept gaining speed like that! Gorash: I try to do things like that a lot during waiting sequences. A special treat for those who watch the run with controller input turned on!

Well maybe after the special world, the levels will be a little easier while catching back up to Castle #4. You've been doing Star World and Gnarly World for a while so it's probably natural to get sick of running the game a bit.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I tried quite a bit of getting around the Crystal Flash, but with no success. It sure would make weapons management easier in the coming segments. I also figure that everyone can make individual savestates themselves, so that they can pick up the movie where they want to, instead of my savestate pick, or just use Tab to fast-forward. Also, less to download that way.

I loved watching the previous run. I didn't expect this run to get re-owned. Also, I agree with FODA about your quality here.

I updated at 40% but didn't post - either no one noticed or posted about it. How sneaky of me. Anyway, major update - 51%. Progress ends after breaking the glass to Maridia. Same link as always 97600: It is faster to shinespark into the top-right room and push the first robot backwards than to stop at the door and glitch through the first robot. 104800: Pushing the first robot into the pit gives the second robot time to move left enough to make it a slower strategy. 108000: No matter what I tried, I wasn't able to mockball at full speed into this passage. 115100 and on: I tried quite a few different combinations of losing energy in this room and the last room with the giant enemies. The rate of losing energy in this green room is faster (50 energy lost per 51 frames vs. 80 energy lost per 96 frames), so I took just enough hits in the later room to give my mobility enough time to get through the room. I also can't use the spike boosting here because then the enemies won't suck away my energy. 126300: I didn't use much arm pumping in order to manipulate some extra power bombs here. 128300: Agh I could not get the enemy knockback to work the same way as the first time through. Chances are I'll be redoing these last few rooms, I just wanted to get an update out since it's been awhile. This segment had a lot of complex rooms to deal with. I welcome any suggestions, as it's very possible I missed an idea. At the end of comparison, I'm 886 frames ahead of MF's run.

Heh, I read that post, but not carefully, and somehow figured it was a program you wrote to mimic the behavior of the beams for some testing purpose. Anyway, thanks!

I downloaded the avi after hearing about extra messages, I like those. But wow, the graphic change was more than I expected, and definitely welcome. I hate the way it blinks in the game. How'd you change that, B? There are also extra messages during the end credits that give credit where credit is due. Also, credit.

Just to attempt an answer to the vote query, didn't Viper7's SMW 100% get 74 votes or thereabouts?
SMW has 83 currently. This run is currently 4th in the all-time list. Just go to submissions on the front page and then click list all submissions. Order them by confidence instead of votes, that way, runs with 1 "no" vote and a million "yes" votes aren't shoved way down the list.

Nice work guys. Watching the memory could be the next big thing to hit TASing since frame advance.

I'm dumbfounded at how broken his game has become. Hopefully one day they will be compiled into a nice site to view, much like M2K2 is for Metroid. Trying to find information in that SDA topic is beyond hopeless for me.

This hack is...strange. I don't know if I would enjoy playing it or not. You made excellent use of spinesharking, short charging, and speed-mockballing. I also feel your pain of trying to stay ahead of the Super Missle count. I'll vote yes. A good addition to the hacks section.

Ads are fine with me if they aren't processor intensive (Flash ap that says "HIT THREE GOATS TO WIN SEVENTY FREE IPODS") or pop-ups / pop-unders.

That was a great watch! It was neat seeing the music coincide with the play so well.
