I think this might be the perfect example of a Vault run. It's (as far as we can tell) optimal, but there is almost no chance that someone would actually want to watch the whole thing.
yes agreed :) there is a run for Sokoban DS already, although I have already found some improvements in that run.

This may not mean anything but do we know if his console was powered on directly before the race or just soft reset? The JP version of BM doesn't clear its RAM values when you soft reset, e.g. bosses stay beaten and items stay collected. If the game had been played at all since it was powered on, or possibly even if it had been reset from the title screen one or more times, it's possible that the game could have begun with a slightly different set of initial RAM values than if it was started directly from a power on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR3Bajok_FM&feature=youtu.be Zero Noin and I figured out a new Area 7 skip that leads directly into the previously known one.

Well you are completely right. I had no idea and couldn't find any reference whatsoever to warps through online searches. I found all the warps and can confirm that Run is faster with them since the final two warps are inaccessible in Hop. In light of this I will cancel the submission.

The only possible luck manipulation going on is if the object has drifted slightly off from the grabbing spot as it goes back and forth.
No, I manipulated the items available in the last two levels.

There are warps that let you skip stages. You, uh, might want to use them.
No, there aren't.

Any reason why you can't deathwarp after retrieving Wednesday from the freezer? That's an awfully long walk back. Otherwise, looked good!
The game sets your respawn point to Wednesday's location after you rescue her.

Here's a page with more info on the shortest games. Choose the "Wipeouts" section: http://www.samsoft.org.uk/reversi/default.asp It mentions 57 possibilities, and says, "Ignoring reflections & rotations there are 5 with the perpendicular opening, 23 with the diagonal and 29 with the parallel." The left-hand list has 24 entries, but many of those have variations linked in the description, so I think all of the unique cases are covered. Now all that's left is for someone to count the flips and find promising candidates for improvement ;)
Thank you so much for finding that. I checked and perpendicular 5 and every diagonal/parallel solution is tied for 14 flips. So I guess the next step is to assign a value for how long cursor movement takes for any particular square and find the lowest value that way.

Hi, thanks for bringing that up. I went ahead and tested a few other possible games. I used these solutions as the basis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ehiWOSp_wk http://reversi-nxn.blogspot.com/2008/08/shortest-reversi-game-on-boards-7x7-and.html For each of these I also tried the same solutions rotated each of four ways (i.e. the same games but starting with each of the possible first moves of black). For the above two solutions they eventually broke down when the AI refused to do the next possible move. I also tried rotating the game played in my current TAS. Note that in addition to four possible opening moves, on my next turn I have the option of two moves that are mirror images of each other so there are 8 possible iterations to try. Of these 7 additional iterations I was only able to get the AI to make the necessary moves in 2 of them, and those 2 games were slower than my current TAS. One of them was only 4 frames slower though, so it seems very promising that there is an improvement possible. I'll keep researching this with more possible solutions. I can't find a complete list of shortest Othello games but presumably the total count of 57 possibilities includes rotated/flipped forms of the same games.

If anyone is interested in pursuing this TAS again there is a new RTA record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjcenzU1DkM Look at the trick at 4:06 where he uses a bomb to cause Rocky to slide across the screen. Is this able to be abused anywhere else?

So did anyone else notice the blatant similarities between this game and Puss N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure? The frog, snake and demon bosses are all the same, the switching between weapon types is similar AND that one level section at the end with the conveyor belts and dropping ceilings is just like near the end of Puss N Boots? It makes sense since they're both Toei games but it's not like Puss N Boots is just the localized version of this game, they're two distinct games using the same assets.

Okay, so I wasn't able to do it in one hit but I did find a faster route through the door: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/7913917580367949 It's possible to get that one enemy to deal the first hit to you so you only need one additional projectile to hit you. (Demonstration purposes only, not optimized)

I've speedrun this game a little bit and I seem to remember being able to fully clip through the final door with only a single enemy shot, provided it hit me at the right angle. It might take longer to set it up like that though

You may have seen it already but there's a TAS already on Nico http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm12582961 http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm12583066 I have no clue how optimized it is

Ohhh okay, Parasol Henbee was the game I was thinking of. And here's another suggestion. Ai Senshi Nicol for FDS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-o-zOOSe2c Overhead-view action game, akin to Guardian Legend or Blaster Master

Crud... there is this Famicom game I'm remembering now, that I am now thinking would make a great TAS. I can't remember the name though and I haven't played it in years. It was a sidescroller platformer, fully written in Japanese, probably takes place in the Edo period like Goemon (but not an actual Goemon game), I remember early in the first level there is a Scarecrow NPC that you talk to on your way, you can go into stores to purchase stuff, and I think one of the next levels was a waterfall where you make your way downward through breakable blocks... craaap I'm gonna have to figure this out

Sorry to necro this but I thought you guys would be interested in seeing that the Japanese version of the game has a pretty entertaining WIP for puzzle mode http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm16129010 Note that this uses SRAM to skip the tutorial.

one more update in this thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ouex_9t_uE This is a video that popped up just recently, it's someone's TAS of the game that comes very close to my time. Most notably, it contains a faster method of climbing the walls that I overlooked. Soooo... I'm starting back from the beginning, making sure to incorporate this tactic wherever possible. This will (hopefully) be the last time I redo this TAS before I submit it. The final time will easily be sub-23m.
