Was I not seeing things, or does the Chuck Rock movie have no subtitles at all? -Josh

Thanks for the compliments. =) Oddly enough, you need to kill all the mummies in that room except for that one. Tested this again to make sure, and it is true. Right now I've been doing some preliminary stuff for Chapter 5. Figured out the optimal route for the overworld stuff, am currently thinking about hearts. See, I have not been able to randomize hearts from enemies, so it seems that getting two heart packs from the beginning trap room is the best way to get the shooting star ASAP. I'll play around with this some more to figure out if this is actually the best thing to do... -Josh

Hey all, I got sick of Startropics for a little bit and messed around with this some more. The first two acts are done, you can check it out on my filespace. It's almost 6 seconds faster than stx-Vile's movie to this point (forgot the avi waits a second before starting the movie), and the second boss isn't quite perfected yet. I improved Act 1 by 40 frames from my last movie, due to stx-Vile's suggestion on how to grab the ninja double (definitely the best way, thanks a lot again!) and finding the real optimal method of walljumping. Been figuring out quite a few things about the game in the process, which means I hopefully won't make any stupid mistakes in my real run... -Josh

Fro Jackson, you rock. Turns out your idea about the ghosts was correct, which meant I didn't have to grab the first rod. Saved a nice amount of time, so thanks! So, for those unfamiliar with the game, there are a couple rooms where I pause for seemingly no reason. This is because there are invisible unhittable ghosts which I am avoiding; you can only kill them after using the Rod of Sight, as seen later in the level. Anyway, a new movie is up. This one covers the first 4 chapters...those who know the game will be in for quite a surprise upon seeing the Ghost Tunnel boss fight. =) -Josh

Turns out I was right, you don't have to go to Shecola until after the Ghost Tunnel. Redoing that dungeon now on my proper movie, which is 11 seconds faster thanks to me correcting that stupid stupid mistake vs. Magma. -Josh

Wait a second...WOW am I an idiot. Just redid the Magma fight with Gigafrost's suggestion and it saved quite a nice chunk of time. I still have my other savestate where I'm almost through the Ghost Tunnel, and I'll finish that first to test something out. See, all the FAQs tell you to go to Shecola and talk to the fortune teller before going to the Ghost Tunnel. I skipped this part in the movie, and am going to see if that will end up working. Anyway, Gigafrost, thanks a bunch! Can't believe that... Fro: If that were possible it would be a huge timesaver, as that would mean 2 less uses of the rod and thus allow me to make it through with my first one. However, it appears that the ghosts remain stationary until you use the rod. I'll test this out fully when I redo the dungeon, but that's how it looks anyway. -Josh

Just to make clear, I was referring to my second version of the Sword Master movie. The one currently in the submission queue (v3) is clean. -Josh

Well, I was wrong, of course there are multiple rods in this dungeon. I'll need to grab a second one, as you need to use one in every room with ghosts in order to avoid damage. Onward I go... -Josh

Fro: Yep, you're right. Too bad, the yoyo is faster, but ah well. And one good sign here is that there's only one Rod of Sight in the whole level, and it's directly on the path. Same thing goes for the mirror, which is also mandatory. Truncated: I love constructive criticism too, I'm just happy that there seems to be almost nothing to improve upon at this point. And you're right, this run would be better if the game didn't force you to do so much talky stuff. Just posted a new FCM with dungeon 3-2 added. This one took awhile, first to figure out that the slingshot was worth grabbing and then to figure out the best way of defeating the boss. I'm doing a no-hit run, remember, so it takes a lot of clever manipulation to beat this guy. For a frame of reference, the total time was 14:30 at the start of 3-2 and now it's 18:06 at the start of 3-3. I know that time's increasing quite rapidly, but Chapter 3 is the longest in the game. I'm hoping for under an hour for this run, and that still seems plausible...Chapter 4 is the shortest (not a single dungeon), and 5 isn't much longer than 1 and 2. Now for the longest and toughest of the many Chapter 3 dungeons, and also the last one where I'll be stuck with the yoyo...the Ghost Tunnel. -Josh

Thanks for the comments and tips. I'm dreading the Ghost Tunnel for this exact reason...plus, isn't the boss only vulnerable to bolas or something? And while I'm at it, I made a mistake in the order of talking to villagers in the posted movie. Fixed it and it's 72 frames faster now. -Josh

Hmm, this explains why I had higher experience than normal in my 2nd Sword Master run...the game must save it as long as the power's on. Good to know, a patch for this would be nice indeed. -Josh

Thanks, I was thinking you'd come in with one of your lists of improvements. =P Most movements are quite easy to perfect in this game, as you can hold down your desired button(s) during one action to make the next come out on the first possible frame. Anyway, new movie is up at my filespace. This one goes to the start of Magma's dungeon. If a chapter has multiple dungeons, I'll notate them like stages; Chapter 3's dungeons would be 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, and 3-5 for example. This is why it says "Up to 3-2" in the filename. And yes, you really DO have to do all that talking in the village. I tested it, this is the fastest way possible. -Josh

Why did you have bullets left in levels 7 and 8? Was there no way to avoid that? Other than that, I'm highly impressed. This game tortured me back in the day, and I like seeing the crap kicked out of it. The driving levels were incredibly boring, but I liked the rest of it. =) -Josh

Well, holee crapola. Just finished Chapter 2, and I'm 25 SECONDS FASTER than my previous movie. The yoyo thing probably didn't even add up to a second, but I managed to get about 20 jillion times better luck manipulation with the 2nd boss. That's where just about all of the improvement comes from...I kill him before I could even start attacking last time. So the total time is now 36141 frames (10:02). It's up on my filespace, ch-ch-check it out! =) -Josh

Hmm, I think you should offer something from each of the consoles. It's mostly NES stuff right now, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles...Streets of Rage 2, both DKC movies, and Contra 3 all may be worth adding as they are excellent runs of familiar classic games. Possibly others I'm forgetting. And I agree that HnF should be added. -Josh

No, the fire wheel isn't a way of getting up there. You use it to hit the container, then get boosted up by the guy. It's better than how I do it in the current movie, but I need to see if it's better than jump slashing the container then using left+right. -Josh

Just to let you guys know, I'm redoing everything from the first room with rats in Chapter 1. I discovered that the closer you are to an enemy, the less time the yoyo takes to execute. This is a pretty decent improvement which may add up to over a second in what I've done thus far. I'll post an update when I'm done with Chapter 2 again. EDIT: Chapter 1 is done, 16 frames faster than before. -Josh

stx-Vile: Thanks for offering to help. Like I said, I won't seriously start this one for awhile (want to use the glitch, still got to do Startropics which is going to be a long freaking run), so don't worry about it for now. Edit: Once again, thank you very much. That is indeed a better method. I will have to see if it's better than the other idea I had, though, which is jump slashing the icon while facing backwards then using left+right to move at normal speed. -Josh

I would suggest testing to see how many of these suggested mistakes actually waste time. If one of them is early on, I would redo it from there. But that's just me. -Josh

I first heard the name "Peach" used in Mario 64. Did it begin earlier than that? -Josh

Nah, the gliding effect only happens while standing. The glitch does allow you to jump backwards at the same speed as when you move forward. Like I said, it's of rather limited use but a fairly decent timesaver. Apparently NG1 has something very similar to this, but in NG3 it just makes you stop immediately. -Josh

Hey all, I've been messing around with this a bit lately. I have a glitch-free run of Act 1 up on my Filespace, it's about 2.6 seconds faster than stx-Vile's up to that point. Any feedback/suggestions would be appreciated. =) Thing is, though, as FCEU doesn't currently enable left+right, I won't seriously work on this until that is the case. The glitch with that button combination in this game isn't significant enough to warrant its own run ala Tiny Toons or Wizards & Warriors, so I'll wait and do a run with the glitch. Basically, there are two situations where I know of it helping: 1. When climbing a wall on its left side and moving to the right afterward. Use left+right for the last jump, and you'll move forward through the wall and thus be able to reach the top a few frames faster. 2. When you're on the left side of a wall, and need to jump down to the right. The glitch allows you to go through the wall and thus start moving forward much sooner. This is a pretty big timesaver, but this situation is quite rare. You can also use this glitch to glide to the right while facing left, which looks cool. =) -Josh

This movie, to my untrained eye, is the supreme tightness. I have never ever played the game and don't know what any mistakes would be, but this looks waaaaay better than Sjoerd's movie already. I especially love all the rapid-fire character switching. FYI, you're around 1:04 faster than him already. -Josh

As a matter of fact, I did this after the second boss died. I need to redo that fight because I just figured out a way to improve it, but I'll keep that in there. -Josh

Nice, thanks for the tips! And just to let everyone know, I am going to sacrifice speed for one thing which I feel would be more entertaining: A no-damage movie. Taking damage in this game saves very little time and looks awful, plus I remember it being quite hard and would myself be impressed to watch a no-damage run. -Josh
