Sorry for double post, but just out of curiosity... Have you found much of interest for the Alucard run? I've been debating whether to go back and improve that one, and anything new would make me lean toward "yes". Thank you!

D'oh, I forgot there aren't any bats there in the JP version! Also, craziest skip yet: you can jump past almost the entire water bridge section in level 9! It saves so much time that I'll torture myself and go for it in my run even though it's RNG hell. Specifically, you need to head to the left side of the first screen there, as the ceiling above you at the start is too high for it to work. You then have to freeze a bird at just the right height...as well as the water itself so that you can jump onto the bird. Not much room for error with this one! To make this work in the US version, I also found an AI loop on Doppelganger that allows you to take it out pretty quickly with the fire spell (found right in front of the stairs in the water bridge room). I don't know what options the JP version has there. This saves somewhere around 5-10 seconds overall, I'd say. It all just looks cool so I'm going for it!

There's also a second useful skip in level 8, though I imagine scrimpeh probably knows about it already. In the room right after the first skip, move right until the first green slime appears then just wait. After 2 short hops, it should do a higher jump, allowing you to freeze it and jump up through. This one saves much less time than the first but is still worth it for sure, real easy too.

Too lazy to take a pic but I just found an easy skip with ice spell in the last level! In the room with the pendulums leading up to Dracula's room, you can freeze the first bat that appears and immediately jump onto the first pendulum instead of climbing the stairs and waiting. Saves about 9 seconds, minus the time spent getting the ice spell. In the US version, the candle in front of the wall with meat in block A-02 has the ice spell, and I think that's also the case in the JP version. Sadly this skip isn't worth doing in the US version since you can't get lightning back before Dracula, but it should save a nice chunk of time in the JP run if memory serves me right. BTW, I've had trouble performing the stair glitch in real time, and I didn't do it in my recent Grant speedrun. I want to learn it for marathons and such, though - is there precise timing involved? Seemed like it to me.

Thank you! Unfortunately, none of these appear to be usable in the US version aside from the new method for 7-0B - no ice spell anywhere in the ghost ship there! Heck, I tested the level 8 skip in the Japanese version and it isn't quite worth giving up lightning for the level 7 boss (definitely good in the US version though!). TAS boss strats would probably make that a different story, of course... Where DO you get ice in JP ghost ship, anyway? That seems like an obvious improvement to that run should I ever get a cart of my own.

Thanks for all the work! You've led me to improve my US version Sypha speedrun. On that note, I wanted to ask something. Are there other areas that can be skipped with ice spell in a real run, like what you show in the level 8 pic? I already do the level 7A tricks but haven't found anything else. Thanks again! EDIT: Figured out the faster version of level 8 skip, not worth doing in a legit speedrun I think. There's a much easier way that's only about 30 frames slower, though.

Hmm, thanks. I was optimistic because my friend PJ accidentally did a zip glitch in 4-4 once while working on his high-score record for the game...but maybe the bats spawn more often on 2nd loop. I've also tried the upward boost off the ring near the end of level 3, and I can get myself in the right position...but I can never launch myself up without getting hit by the bone dragon above and dying. I've also come to the conclusion that the 2nd eye damage boost is too risky to try in a live run, though I miiiiiight force myself to do it if I ever tried for a new record. I have to imagine there's something in the TAS that could make sub-35 feasible...

Hi everyone, not sure where to post this so figured this thread would be as good a place as any! So in case you don't know, I speedrun this game and will do a live run at the next SDA marathon in January. This TAS has had me wondering if any of the new tricks are feasible in real time, but so far I've had no luck. The zip in 4-4 has proven especially vexing to me. It doesn't look that hard in terms of execution, but I can never get the bat spawns to work correctly. The game page doesn't cover this, and I haven't been able to figure out how you do it. I would love to be able to do any of these crazy tricks in front of a live audience and would greatly appreciate any help you guys can offer! BTW, I have a live stream at http://www.twitch.tv/srkfunkdoc - where could I post to let you know that I'll be playing CV4?

OK, here's what I mean: I pause the emulator, hold down+MK, and press \ to frame advance. If the emulation was arcade-perfect in this regard, I would only need to press \ once more to see the animation begin; this is how EX and most other games are (this specific part of NKI's test has been disputed). Instead, I have to press it 3 more times. I'm saying this because I actually own this game on PSX and feel the extra delay when doing combos. Even experienced fighting game players wouldn't notice 1 frame of delay very quickly, but 2 frames...yeah, we definitely will. Anyway, I was kinda hoping people would discuss the Ootake author's article, as this seems to be much bigger issue in emulation than people realize...

Trust me, the guide measures frames from button press to impact. Most Japanese fighting-game guides include frame data, and that's how it's always done. Your idea re: jumping is actually a good one, but fighting games use a different solution - make characters with 360 motions (i.e. Zangief) take longer to jump than the others. A lot of emulators have extra delay - to see what I mean, compare any game in MAME and NeoFBA. PCSX2 is infamous for it, so I'm not surprised that the PS1 counterpart also has it. Here is an interesting if poorly-translated piece from the author of Ootake on this subject. He's taken a lot of care to make sure his emulator is lag-free, and I wish others would follow suit.

why do you think the input delay is in the emulator and the game?
It's extra delay that shouldn't be in the game. For example, Ryu's medium kick takes 9 frames to hit after pressing the button, but: 1. Published data says it should only take 7 frames. 2. The animation of the move is, in fact, 7 frames. Hence my point that the emulator is adding 2 extra frames of delay. That is actually quite a bit for fighting games, which is why I'm trying to find some sort of alternative. No luck yet, though. =/

Sorry, this isn't really a TAS-related question, but I was just curious... Does one exist? To be specific, PCSX-RR with all the default plugins seems to add 2 extra frames of delay (same results with the keyboard and my arcade stick w/ USB converter), and sadly that's the best I've had any emulator perform thus far. I'd like to stream/record a single-segment run of Street Fighter EX's Expert Mode, but you just can't afford to have any delay with some of the combos there! Thanks in advance. =)

Great stuff again, but I'm still of the opinion that a TAS should be a single movie completing all chapters. Partially because I agree with mmbossman's point here, and partially because it adds an extra bit of strategy; for those who didn't read my post in the last thread, completing chapters gives you better starting stats/techs/equipment in subsequent chapters.

Wow, glad to see this game get some love! One caveat: I'd rather see a full-game TAS. It would add a bit of strategy regarding order, as I think each quest you beat gives you better starting stats (+ maybe equipment/techs?) for future quests. And all the quests combined would still take way less time than say FF7. But that's a minor point to worry about later. Definitely voting yes on this!

I'm only interested in Valkyrie Profile, but that game seems to have too many issues to be worth running right now. I can only get the game to work at all by using SPUasync with the "wait for CPU action" option, and the voices don't work with that. In fact, they're replaced with these horrible noises that would singlehandedly ruin any movie. And on top of that, there's the disc-changing issue already brought up. Am I missing anything here?

So for whatever reason, the game refuses to work after I pick a difficulty level. It used to before, not sure if this has anything to do with any new plugins or bios I used.

Have to disagree there bro, the game has cool dungeons but they only matter in a 100% run. =/ And VP is my thing, so I'm doing this whether it be for this site or youtube.

Yeah, I'm the guy who did the single-segment A and B runs on SDA, and I heard about that 100%. I'm just interested in finding out what the fastest theoretical times are, that's all. Don't know of any really cool time-saving bugs in this game, unfortunately, and there isn't a lot of platforming in A or B runs anyway. =/

The differences between difficulty levels lie in characters' starting exp levels (highest in Easy, always level 1 in Hard) and available dungeons. Easy mode does not allow you to achieve the A (best) ending, and only Hard mode has Flame Jewels (needed to unlock characters & equipment in the post-game bonus dungeon). Additionally, the first dungeon is quite a bit shorter in Easy mode. Enemy stats are actually exactly the same on all difficulty levels. I can see his argument, since lower levels give you more room to manipulate stat gains from level ups (which are somewhat random), and the Creation Gem/Jewel (which allow you to make the best weapons etc.) are not available in Easy, but I don't see any of that coming into play in speedruns. That being said, levels don't even make a difference in the B ending strategy, so I can pick Hard without a problem there. Even for the A ending, the levels may not matter since you shouldn't need Guts or any other skills...leveling up Jelanda's traits to transfer her in the beginning is the only potential hurdle that I see.

Alright, I'm doing this. I don't care if this site doesn't accept it, there's always Youtube - I just want to see it done, and I already have the tech knowledge from doing the real speedruns. However, the last time I TASed anything was years ago and I have no idea how memory viewing or any of this other new advanced crap works. Any help with that side of things would be much appreciated! As you might expect, I'll go for the Easy mode B ending first (which won't be any different strategically from the speedrun) and see how I feel from there. Really, a 100% run would be by far the most interesting to watch, I think, but that would be a gargantuan project...

Valkyrie Profile 100% TAS would be good. It's obvious when you would need to skip through the video, and it's not like casual gamers/viewers would know about that game anyway.

omg I haven't posted here in forever Well, having just seen this at Sp00ky's house, I can confidently vote YES. I'm not entirely sure about some of the boss fights, but even there it seemed like he had to manipulate them to avoid getting knocked down. Excellent work for your first try (hell, period), Vic! Loved this game back in the day myself, didn't think it would work for a TAS but you pulled it off. NEXT TIME I DEMAND BIG BREAST GEAR DIZZY TAS TIA

Hello TASers, I appreciate the recent work on this game and enjoy its style. However, I wonder something: Could item manipulation and/or the locked rooms help save time? Among the enemy drops are a dart power-up and an item that splits you into three. You can also make them drop keys for the locked doors. Now, as for the hidden rooms themselves, apparently they either just give you the item or force you to fight a miniboss first. Not sure if this can be manipulated. The item you receive is also somewhat random - try to get the wave beam, as it can take out even real bosses in just a few hits. There's also a permanent dart power-up which is even stronger than the enemy drop...you can get it in level 3-1, maybe earlier. I may be wrong here, but for how long these boss fights get, I figure it would at least be worth looking into this stuff. =) Thanks, Josh.
