I would kill for high-quality Wolfenstein & Spear of Destiny runs. Commander Keen would be pretty neat too, along with the original Duke Nukem... -Josh

Yep...Mike Bison became Balrog, Balrog became Vega, and Vega became M.Bison. In Alpha 3 the boxer had a win quote where he said "I'll bite your ears off!" or something to that effect...it wasn't edited in the American version. -Josh

Pretty much, you just keep mashing the motion for it. Persona literally did not know this during the run. EDIT: In the Saturn version it keeps going for however long you want, but Persona was using PSX. -Josh

Actually, I think almost everybody from the arcade Punch-Out games has been reused later on. The original had Glass Joe, Piston Hurricane, Bald Bull, and Mr. Sandman. Also Kid Quick and Pizza Pasta, who haven't appeared in anything else to my knowledge. Then the arcade Super Punch-Out had Bear Hugger, Dragon Chan, Vodka Drunkenski, Great Tiger, and Super Macho Man. Also, an interesting note: In 1985 Nintendo released an arcade game called Arm Wrestling which used a modified Punch-Out engine. It featured some rather interesting opponents, one of whom was a masked guy called (fittingly enough) "Mask X". In order to defeat him you first had to unmask him...and when you do, it turns out that he's actually Bald Bull! -Josh

Actually, this is exactly what ziplock is doing with tool-assisted NES runs. Check it out. You can see in the upper-left corner which games have bounties...personally I have a problem with using some of those individual Punch-Out fights since there aren't passwords to them, but other than that this seems like a cool idea. Unfortunately the bounties are postponed for the time being, so I'm not sure what's up... -Josh

Didn't you see my Wai Wai World thread? ;) As far as I can tell, this kind of posting is OK if it's for something constructive (giving updates on your movies) as opposed to spamming, seeing as I've never had any complaints. *shrug* -Josh

I would definitely go for flawlessness. Real time is more entertaining for Punch-Out and almost all other games IMO (though there are exceptions...games like Kid Chameleon or the Sonic series which "reward" skill with long after-level bonuses). BTW, speaking of your site (which is a neat idea, btw!), I just wanted to let you know that if you try to play Kickmaster with FCEU, it freezes after the second boss. So if someone wants to submit a video for that game, they'll have to do so with VirtuaNES or Famtasia probably. Also, a question: Could the FCEU movies from this site be submitted to your site? Say, if you were to offer a bounty for a Legend of Zelda timeattack and Phil submits his...could he earn the bounty if nobody beats him? Thanks, Josh.

OK, after all that, level 4 is on track to be improved 43 frames from v1 (slowdown WAS the culprit, it turns out). Currently I'm at the beginning of the FPS part, where I will save exactly half a second compared to v1. -Josh

Hmm...I'm going to go back and redo the movie from the start of level 4. It seems that I allowed more slowdown there than I did in v1, which explains the higher time. That may end up being the one thing that keeps this movie from reaching under 13 minutes... EDIT: OK, using my computer clock as a stopwatch, level 4 really IS 2 seconds slower in v2. I have no idea how in the heck that happened, though... EDIT #2: Alright, I must have put down the wrong time for v1 or FCEU must have calculated something wrong, because level 4 was slightly faster in v2. I am going to redo it, however, because the first part of the level was a bit slower. -Josh

Level 6 is done with another improvement that surprised me...2 seconds! This was mainly through optimizing the boss, and there were a couple other minor improvements as well. -Josh

Hey there, for those who didn't already know, Persona's run of the first castle has been posted to a couple places: Combovideos.com and Fileplanet. Both sites require registration, but it is WELL worth it. This is a multi-segment 100% (or 100.3% or whatever it is) speedrun which uses no glitches and takes no damage. The time is 1 hour and just under 11 minutes...simply incredible to watch IMO. EDIT: Actually, looking into it further, there is one major flaw in this run: Persona didn't know that you could keep doing the bat's shinespark-thingy without stopping. He estimates it could have saved him 5-6 minutes...other than that, though, the only mistakes are extremely minor ones. Also, he is currently about 80% done with the inverted castle but doesn't plan to finish it anytime soon. He says if he ever goes back to SotN it'll be to do a Richter run. -Josh

Alright, levels 4 and 5 are completed. Level 4 was done in 1:06, leading me to believe that I wrote down the wrong time for v1; in actuality this is around 1-2 seconds faster (used a quicker way to end the level). Level 5 surprised me...3 seconds better than last time! A great many minor improvements were made, and I found a faster way to execute my shortcut in 5-2. -Josh

Thanks, Dan. The 3rd boss fight was so bad in my first movie that I just HAD to redo this, and some of my other mistakes were small but extremely stupid; for instance, I had completely forgotten about the crouch-run until the level 5 boss, and that saves a little bit of time in earlier stages. Also, when I needed to drop down somewhere I just ran forward and fell. Now in these situations I jump down ledges as any timeattacker should (well, unless you're playing Wai Wai World or Rygar or something). It seems to save 5 frames or so per drop. -Josh

Oceanborn, their second album, is definitely the one I'd recommend for a newcomer. Their music is best described as symphonic metal...Tarja (said female lead singer) has an INCREDIBLE voice. -Josh

Even though IIRC all of the band members are Finnish, all of their songs are in English. Their accents (the lead singer is female, there are occasional male voices as well) can be tough to understand at times, so you'll likely want to check lyrics often. Their official page is the best place to look. Let me just say this, if any of you enjoy Dracula Battle Perfect Selection or The Black Mages or anything like that, you will wet yourself with joy upon hearing this. -Josh

This band completely owns my soul. Our Finnish members here will likely know what I'm talking about, everyone else should just freaking RUN and download something from them. Try "End of All Hope", "Slaying the Dreamer", or "Moondance" for starters. -Josh

Alright, level 3 is completed 5 seconds faster than in v1. Almost all of this was due to a much, much better boss strategy, and there are a couple other minor improvements as well. -Josh

Alright, work on version 2 has begun. So far I improved level 1 by 1 second (optimized the boss), and level 2 by 10-15 frames (need to check the exact amount). -Josh

I recall him saying that he left it at the title screen so as to give us a chance to hear the music for awhile. But yes, this could definitely stand to have quite a few more rerecords.

My only question is, could you have beaten that first boss quicker by jumping along with him and attacking? You may have had to take damage to do so.
Nope. This is another thing I probably should have mentioned...if you are damaged and overlapping an enemy AT ALL, you cannot hurt him with normal attacks. Combine that with the fact that this boss has a rather large invisible hit area, and the suggested method is slower than what I used. And many thanks for the comments! =) pilif: Hmm, my movie plays back just fine with whatever blip's newest version is. If need be I can put the older version on my Filespace page. -Josh

Dan: I would have already, except I can't figure out how to submit movies. It keeps saying I have to login, even after I do so. My name and password are correct, it doesn't display any error messages...what's up? Anyway, once that's settled, I'll definitely be submitting it. As for my other movies thus far: - Castle of Dragon, Sword Master, and Vice will all eventually be submitted. I'll do one more version for each, though, as all have room for many minor improvements (and one major one, in the case of Vice). - Dash Galaxy is probably too boring a game to ever be accepted here. My video is just about perfect, barring the existence of any glitches I don't know about, and it's a real snoozer for someone who doesn't know the game (which would be the vast majority, I presume). -Josh

I heard that on Suprnova there was a timeattack of this game which used a glitch to "warp" from the second level to the last one or something ridiculous like that. I couldn't find it, though. =/ -Josh
