Just beat level 9, about 1200 rerecords spent. I'll just hold off on uploading until it's complete. Next up is the other driving level, which is at least short... -Josh

Anyway...as Castlevania 3 is IMO perhaps the best in the series and one of my all-time favorite NES games, I may just do this Grant run myself. Currently I'm wondering which would be more interesting: Take the Sypha path, or take the Alucard path but pick different levels from what Phil & Genisto did. The cool thing about the latter is that between the three runs you'd see every level in the game, but it wouldn't give the fastest time. Hm... -Josh

I heard therealssjlink was working on such a Simon's Quest run, but don't know if it's been stopped or what.

Just beat Level 8. Again, it's somewhat short but extremely difficult. I think I've got this one nailed, though. It's up on Filespace, but the names are screwed up. I moved all my movies to a folder with blip's latest version of FCEU, deleted and re-uploaded them (I know now I didn't have to do this, but ah well), and now can't rename them to their proper form. Anyone know what's up? Thanks, Josh.

Grant doesn't really have his own "path" per se, getting him just adds an extra (very long) level and cuts out the first part of the forest stage. I would definitely not take the Alucard path with him, since Alucard can do the same things and more with his flying. Hm... -Josh

Just finished level 7, you know where to check it out. Even though this level is longer than 6, it's much easier and it took many fewer rerecords. Hm...not much else to say. Total time is up to 8:05, with four levels to go. -Josh

Level 6 is done, and the new FCM is up. Personally I am very happy with how this stage turned out...took no damage, and had to use some creativity to do so. I am quickly discovering how much of a help the crouch-run can be, and am kicking myself for not taking advantage of it in earlier levels. There are 11 levels total...timewise, I'm probably close to halfway done, as the first 4 levels are quite a bit shorter than the rest. -Josh

Level 5 is done, just uploaded the new FCM. Some more notes: - I forgot to mention the coins last time...they serve exactly the same purpose as in Super Mario Bros. - You can move forward while crouching. If you look VERY closely, you can see me use this at one point vs. the level 5 boss. - Also in level 5, I need to look more into how the falling logs work (you can change their position by delaying when you scroll upward) and into the possibility of blowing up walls with grenades so I don't have to stop and whip them. - This movie has 2400 rerecords already and is not even really close to halfway done. -Josh

Hey guys, just wanted to get some discussion started for this. A couple things I've noticed... - After using Olaf's fart, he automatically puts his shield over his head. Obviously something you want to correct ASAP. - Scorch seems to fly upward faster if you mash B. This means you'll stop flying more quickly, though. - A couple times, when I used Erik's double jump to break walls above me, he just kept moving upward like normal instead of falling down. If you can figure out how to get this consistently it could be very useful. -Josh

Thanks for the feedback! =) And yes, it's a problem with every emulator I know of. You might remember that I fly directly through asteroids...that was to show that they don't actually exist and it's the emulator screwing up. -Josh

We're not complaining about the damage, in fact many of us find that more entertaining. We're talking about the missed slashes and other sloppiness...accuracy should be an aim in these videos as well. -Josh

Well, now that I'm done with Wai Wai World, this is my next project. Currently I have an incomplete FCE Ultra movie available on my Filespace page, which covers the first 4 levels. Some notes: - There are 3 types of levels in this game: Action-platformer stages, driving stages (basically, your typical overhead shooter with a car instead of a spaceship), and Lethal Enforcers-style shooter stages. I chose to upload the movie after level 4 because it shows all three of these types. - You can only affect speed in the driving stages by not getting hit and killing the bosses ASAP; in the shooter levels you can only affect speed by killing the last enemy ASAP (there are no bosses in these levels). Thus, in addition to speed, I have these goals in mind when playing these levels: 1. Kill all enemies with 100% accuracy. 2. Collect all items (some enemies in the shooter levels don't drop items). 3. Don't get hit (in the shooter levels). - In the driving stages you can shift gears, which affects the car's moving speed; naturally, I stay at "3" all the time as it is fastest. - In all stages except the driving ones, you can shoot a pistol and throw grenades. The "B" icons give you ammo for the gun, and the "G" icons give you grenades. In the shooter levels the only difference between the two is that the grenades have a wider hitbox, while in the platformer stages there are many differences between them. - In the platformer stages, in addition to the two special weapons I mentioned, you have a whip. It's a bit different from the ones in Castlevania, as it is pretty quick and can hit above and behind you. The best way to kill bosses, whenever possible, is to get close and whip them to death. - In the platformer stages, the gun has mediocre range and deals one point of damage, and the grenade has longer range and can deal two points of damage (depending on whether or not the enemy moves out of the explosion). They are both slower to execute than the whip, which is why I only use them when at a distance. - If you attack while standing, you stop briefly. If you attack when about to land from a jump, though, you glide along the ground at normal speed. - Being hit can launch you forward or backward, it's pretty much the same as Castlevania 4. The difference here is that you move more slowly when launched, so being hit is something you want to avoid unless it saves you time via invincibility or a shortcut, or you just can't avoid it (all of these cases can be seen in level 3). - There are a couple times where I stop and whip an enemy...in these cases, it is faster than any other solution. - The 3rd boss is hell...one thing to note is that the gun doesn't damage him when he's doing his bo charge, which is why I use a grenade here. That's about it for now. Feel free to post any other questions or (especially!) constructive criticism. Thanks, Josh.

Alright, this baby is finally done and you can get it at my Filespace page. The total time is 34:24, with 7946 rerecords. I used the original Japanese ROM this time. As to why the time is as high as it is, I ended the first movie a bit too early. It should finish after scrolling through the last bit of dialogue, which adds 19 seconds to the time. So overall, accounting for this, I improved 10:57 from version 1. Thought the last 2 levels were improved more, but oh well... The man who doesn't want to touch this game again for a LONG time, Josh.

Movie is done...well, almost. It wasn't until after I finished and watched it again when I noticed that I made a HUGE mistake against the last boss. I'll finish this thing tomorrow... Oh, btw, this video will have more total rerecords than v1 even though it's so much shorter. Always a good sign. =) -Josh

Well, never mind. I decided on what I thought would be a cool way to do the level, and it turned out quite well IMO. It was even done a bit faster this time, as well. The total time is 30:06 now, one more level to go... -Josh

After much testing and effort, Moai is finally done! The total time is now 25:26 with 5078 rerecords. That is a 10:55 improvement from v1, folks. =) The shurikens and walljump glitch both saved mucho time in this level, and I also figured out a method to pick up the key as soon as possible. I violated my pure-speed goal a tiny bit, to show off a cute little bug; when I save Moai as Mikey, then immediately switch to Moai, he gets stuck in the floor for about 2-3 frames. Also, after that, I continue using Moai as long as possible just so that the viewer can get to hear a little of his theme song. Anyway, the shooter level is next. Quietust, Blitzwing, or anyone else who's seen my first version, feel free to offer any suggestions on how this stage should be played. Thanks, Josh.

Very impressive overall, loved that shortcut! One thing, though...it seems like you missed a slash in the second fight vs. the worm (or, rather, that you hit him after he became invincible). -Josh

Goemon is done in just under 4 minutes, and the total time is now 21:48. This level, even more than any of the others thus far, looks MUCH better than it did in the last version, as I only take 2 hits the whole time. Forgot to mention this, but I didn't, and won't, have to use the healing room this time either. -Josh

Fuuma's stage is done, and the total time is now 17:50 (5:48 faster than v1 now). I got the shuriken, as that is definitely worth it (also lets you have two Fuumas on the screen in that room). This stage also shows off the fact that you can still take damage while teleporting. =P And I tried using the squeeze glitch in normal-sized passageways with Kong; it doesn't work, as he just walks through normally. Ah well... -Josh

As far as level ups go, I was just thinking that bosses would take longer in general due to lower attack levels. Also, with lower magic levels I was wondering if you may not be able to abuse Fairy as much as you'd like, but maybe you can... -Josh

Yep, that's what I'm thinking right about now. Hopefully, with the shurikens, I can move quickly enough through the green dragon hall that I won't have to kill all three of them. And I will be doing things slightly differently in Fuuma's stage...I will grab the cape on the way there, using the walljump glitch so I can get it without backtracking. The hidden exit is a bit to the right of the cape, so it'll waste more time if I get it on the way back. -Josh

And King Kong land is done, with the total time up to 13:50. That was actually faster than Castlevania, even with the hidden exit. I use the squeeze glitch in all of the small passages here, and the wall climb glitch once. I also use Kong to jump over the wall before those flying spaceship things (on the way to the teleporter), rather than going down the stairs and using Mikey to go through the passage. Now it's time for Hell (both literally and figuratively). There's a big decision to make here: Whether or not to grab Fuuma's shurikens. Hmm... -Josh

Arc: Ah yes, forgot about that. Also, speaking of level 5, do you think the giant would take longer than Helmethead or whatever his name is? kopernical: That is true, but then you have to remember than level-ups are less frequent in the US version. Not too sure how that balances out... -Josh
