This game is going to take more time than I thought (a lot of precise movements need to be performed for the best time)...it'll be on the back-burner. I made a movie of completing Burger World (as it's one of the shortest levels), which ended up being just under 1:30, but it desynced right away when I tried to play it back. Hm. FYI, in case anyone cares, the route I feel would be best for this is as follows: - The Street - Burger World - The Hospital - Turbo Mall 2000 (you can get all 3 ticket pieces here in one shot if you did Street and Burger World beforehand) - Drive-In - Highland High School - Couch Fishing - GWAR Concert -Josh

I played this game a LOT back in the day, and think it wouldn't be too bad of a timeattack choice. It requires some planning due to its structure (somewhat like a smaller-scale Super Metroid) and the fact that your inventory is rather limited (each character can only carry 4 items at a time). I might whip up something really quickly here...I'll be going for the normal ending, at it takes far less time than the good one. -Josh

Alright, for now I've got to prepare for Evolution (http://www.evo2k.com , national fighting game tournament). Afterward I'll get back to working on Sword Master. I think you're all going to enjoy this one when I feel it is ready. =) -Josh

This does not exist AFAIK. I only know of the blue and red fireballs, and they are the same gameplay-wise...the red one is just a random graphical glitch. They made it into its own separate move for Ryu in Super, and he's kept in in almost every SF since. -Josh

IMO it would make a boring run. It's quite long and since you would be using the same character the whole time, it would get boring. I honestly don't see the point of fightning game time attacks.
The point would be to show off a variety of difficult combos and glitches. Any combos that involve specific-frame timing, in particular, would be great to see...stuff like Guile's multiple Sonic Boom combos in Capcom vs. SNK 2. Dunno if older games have anything like that, though. -Josh

If there is a way to get Sega CD games to work with this, expect me to do something with the Eternal Champions sequel. MAN are the combos in that game broken... -Josh

YESSSSSS!!! After figuring out how to beat some bosses faster and further extend the life of the flame sword, I finally got under 7 minutes (albeit only 18 frames short)! I'm done with this game now... -Josh

If you want pure speed, I wonder if Zangief wouldn't be the best choice. He can combo into Spinning Piledriver in World Warrior (and ONLY World Warrior, no other SF), and it leaves them right next to him so you may be able to land it again. Another good one is Guile, thanks to his oldschool four-fierce combo (Jump Fierce, Stand Fierce cancelled into Fierce Sonic Boom, f+fierce). That is a guaranteed dizzy, and doing it again means they die. -Josh

Alright, second version of this is done, with about a 2-second improvement. There really isn't much to this game...it's mainly impressive to those who know how gargantuan the game is. -Josh

First version done, with a time of 8:05 (29122 frames) and almost 2200 rerecords. All magic spells except the cane (little damage, completely and utterly worthless) see use at some point. Also, I take no damage until the very last boss (using your invincibility after getting hit makes things go faster, as he shoots lightning bolts which are as tall as the screen). Work on version 2 shall begin as soon as I am done with Dash Galaxy (a far simpler game to timeattack). -Josh

OK, this quasi-sequel to Castle of Dragon is my current project and I think you'll all love it when I'm done. Some discoveries I made have revealed that this is actually an excellent game choice...VERY fast-paced and fun. As of right now I have completed the first four levels (out of 7) with a time of 3:10 and over 1000 rerecords. There are a couple ugly spots (particularly in level 2), and I didn't learn a certain trick until the level 3 boss...that might save some time in the first two. As with CoD, affecting enemy behavior can be frustrating (though not as bad this time). -Josh

First version done, 7:54 is the time. The movie desyncs in the middle, but I don't really care yet as there are a few clear improvements to make. Very low number of rerecords, which I don't see changing...there are a couple difficult jumps to perform but absolutely no random factors at all. -Josh

Alright, now that I know how, I will do a timeattack for this game. It'll be a nice change of pace from Castle of Dragon, as it has roughly zero random factors that I'm aware of... -Josh

OK, the quasi-Version 6 is done and I ever so slightly beat my prediction. The time is down to 7:04, with almost 1700 rerecords this time. -Josh

It's a legitimate console speedrun. Don't wanna spoil myself with the trailer, so I'll wait until the whole thing's done. Hats off to you for doing this, Josh.

My sort-of version 5 is done. Another 10 seconds of improvement, due to speeding up those boss fights I mentioned plus finding new ways to improve the blue dragon and the last boss. Total time is down to 7:12 now, and this version totaled 1335 rerecords. There are a couple other ideas I have for improvement (five of the bosses, to be specific), so I'll hold off on submitting anything. I love everything up to the blue dragon, so that's where I'll start off next time...somewhere between 7:05 and 7:10 should be possible. -Josh

There could also be categories for pure speed and 100%. Man, this sounds like a Metroid game right about now... -Josh

OK, version 4 is finally done. Actually know how to stop and resume a movie now, yay. More than twice as many rerecords as the prior version for...a 4-second improvement. Um, I really don't know how I should feel about that. EDIT: Okay, for a further explanation... All of my improvements (controlling enemy randomness, faster methods of fighting the skeletons on the first two stages) turned out to be of the extremely minute variety. Also, there are three enemy battles which I did more slowly than in version 3, so I'll go back to where the first one was and redo the rest of the movie. After that, I finally feel ready to submit this...is there any chance that this site could take an FCE Ultra movie, or would I have to go the speedruns.org route? Please don't tell me to use another emulator, this is the only one I know of which accurately displays this game's graphics. Thanks, Josh.

I would like to see a run of Professional mode. For those who don't know, this is unlocked by beating the game and it does two things: Remove all the simulation scenes, and make the game harder in general. -Josh

But does a boring game done as fast as possible make a great video? No, IMO, and that to me is the biggest problem with most of the new videos coming out. The games themselves don't allow for any creative or extraordinary play.
Nope, I appreciate games I played often as a child being run through as fast as possible. Astyanax for example...a boring movie to many, but I loved it as this was my single favorite game back in the day (seriously). That's why I'm doing Castle of Dragon now...it's another game that I liked when I was young and still have a soft spot for. The thing with that game is that there is room to do impressive stuff (dodge everything, which is EXTREMELY difficult to do in a real game), but it makes the movie FAR slower. So for now I'm just working on speed...might make a flashy version if anyone cares. -Josh

One thing... To me, speed is primarily what this is about. I don't know about anyone else, but I view this work in the same way that the Doom speedrunning community does; that is, that the primary purpose is to show what the theoretical best possible time for each game is. I have no problem doing cool stuff if it fits within that goal, but I am not a fan of sacrificing speed for anything. Just my .02, Josh.

Because I'm a total noob and didn't know you could do that. Hell, I don't even know how to make movies in more than one sitting. =P Besides, so many other things to work on...need to make a whole new version anyway. -Josh
