OK, here's one for the topic: On the Ball. Or, as it's known in Japan, Camel Try. For those who don't know, in this game you rotate the screen around to maneuver a blue marble to the exit. Simple concept, but they do a lot with it and it's a hell of a fun game. Thing is, in addition to the set of courses you start with, there are THREE hidden sets which increase in difficulty (these are unlocked via passwords). A full run would take forever...I wonder if we could just make a video for each set of courses. This game is a natural for speedrunning, and I think it'd be awesome to see. -Josh

Wait, wasn't the American version left intact and the European one ("Castlevania: The New Generation") censored? I know the latter part is true at least, and I distinctly recall blood all over the place in the US one. *shrug* -Josh

Oh, so SDA just times things differently from us? Alrighty then, makes sense. I had a hard time believing we could improve so little on a legitimate record...turns out we actually did. -Josh

I am offended that Castlevania 3 is below so many digital piles of garbage. Also for Rockman 5 being above what is, in my view, the single greatest game in that whole "universe" (3). But, I am greatly pleased by the respect for Kunio-kun (although how in the hell Renegade is so far above River City Ransom is beyond me...), and that FF3 is so high. That is one of my all-time favorites in the series... BTW, Final Fantasy owes its life to being a damn good series of games, at least initially. Dragon Quest, on the other hand, owes its life to Akira Toriyama and Shonen Jump. </fanboy>

I've posted this in another thread, but I'll say it again: The two "traditional" RPGs that I can see being of realistic length are Mario RPG and Mystic Quest (aka. Final Fantasy USA). Even then, I imagine we'd have to split them up into multiple parts ala some of the SDA videos. And isn't there already a speedrun video of Zombies Ate My Neighbors out there somewhere? I recall talking to a friend who said he found it from Suprnova, but when I looked there I couldn't find anything. BTW, he also mentioned a NES Strider glitched run (some sort of warp from the second level to the last one), which he got from the same site, but I couldn't find that either... -Josh

Ehrm...OK, I'm stupid. I downloaded the Windows binary, and although those new hotkeys work perfectly I can't find any way to actually make a movie. Is it supposed to be in a menu somewhere that I can't find? Thanks, and a huge thumbs-up for doing this, Josh.

OK, for those of you who don't know, the thread starter here is a Gamefaqs troll who is more obssessive about timeattacks stealing his nonexistant fame (and don't say "Twin Galaxies gets all the attention and they suck" again, that's like saying that all the best American fighting game players don't compete in any tournaments) than anyone I've ever seen being obssessive over anything. Whew, that was a pretty long sentence. =P Anyway, let's just say I have had a bad experience with one of his "friends" (not sure if that's true or just him under fake names) on AIM and leave it at that. Please lock this thread, Josh.

nifboy: Too good, stumped me. I can answer #6 though. The game in question is Mutant League Football, and the promised second game was Mutant League Hockey. There was actually a cartoon based on the latter, I remember it from my youth... Oh man, that brought back memories of killing all the other teams's QBs. Wonder why someone doesn't try that idea nowadays, especially with exaggerated sports games being all the rage (NBA Street, etc.). And I'll give a quick question of my own here: What company designed the gameplay engine of Def Jam Vendetta? Bonus points if you can name any of the past games they've worked on. -Josh

OK I see nobody cares...might as well give the answers anyway. 1. In Alpha 2 there are 4 characters capable of performing 100%-lifebar combos: Shin Akuma (OK, so he's banned from tournaments...), Rose, Gen, and Rolento. Shin Akuma actually has two different infinite combos. One of them is to get your opponent in the corner, stand a little bit away from him, and keep jumping straight up and throwing air fireballs. The other is even simpler: Low short kick, low fierce punch (this part requires a little timing) cancelled into jab roll, repeat. Rose's involves a peculiar bug and is as follows: Absorb a high number of fireballs (I think it's 10 or something like that). Then, activate your custom combo (level 3). Start the combo with a sweep, then keep throwing fireballs. It'll take 5 or 6 to kill them, as all those absorbs make your own fireball deal ridiculous damage. For Rolento, activate lvl3 custom combo. Sweep, and cancel it into his superjump. While in the air, keep mashing Short Kick; upon landing, repeat the superjump combo until they die. This works because special moves do more damage than normals in CCs, and anything from Rolento's superjump is considered a special. And with Gen, again, activate lvl3 custom combo and sweep them. I forget how this one goes exactly, but basically you keep doing his upwards kick special, but only the first couple hits each time. When meter is about to run out, do the kick special for all 8 hits and it should kill them. 2. In Alpha 3, Dan's taunts can deal damage in X-ism. Too bad that mode absolutely blows. =P 3. Chun's special color in SF3: 3s is none other than her default gray color from Hyper Fighting (a.k.a. SF2 Turbo). 4. Perform I-No's air Dust, and cancel it during its initial frames with Faultless Defense (the green blocking, back+two buttons). You can hold the FD buttons down, or keep cancelling the Dust. Looks quite funny, but not useful in a real match because it sucks up meter so quickly. 5. This is actually possible in all of the EX games. Start a round with the full 3 levels of super meter, and connect a super as the First Attack; this gives you a huge meter bonus, thus recouping much of what you lost with the super. With Allen, for example, you can do the following: Triple Break (First Attack), Justice Fist -> Fire Force -> Triple Break, Justice Fist -> Triple Break, Justice Fist. For those who don't know, Fire Force and Triple Break are Allen's two supers. The Triple Break launches them, allowing you to perform juggles like this. And yes, you can chain a special move into a super into another super. 6. Easy one here. Perform QCF+B (quarter circle forward, a.k.a. the fireball motion), then QCF+D; this makes Kyo perform his double kick which launches them. On the Neo-Geo versions of this game, for some reason, doing the second kick with that motion allows you to juggle them with anything you want (normally you can't juggle with ANYTHING after the B version of this move). So, you can just keep doing that double-kick motion with your opponent in the corner, and it's an infinite. 7. Another simple one. Keep pressing A+C in the air; this makes Zantetsu and Lee perform their normal jumping A, but allows it to chain into itself. With Zantetsu this actually is an infinite combo on a grounded opponent in the corner. 8. Kevin, Kain, and both Kim brothers can use two supers in a combo. Kevin can combo his punch super into his kick one, and vice-versa (or kick super twice). Kain can do punch super into kick super IIRC. Dong Hwan can do his air super twice in a row, and Jae Hoon can combo punch super into kick super. 9. The three characters in question are Sagat, Ken, and Dhalsim. If you try to perform their supers as a reversal, they'll just use whatever was the last special move you did with them; interestingly enough, you can use this with Ken to do a reversal AIR HURRICANE KICK (no joke). In the Dreamcast version this was fixed, not sure about Anniversary Edition. -Josh

OK then... I figured Roo would be OK to use, I just don't recommend him and Zan because they suck. =P Now, the extra star dash moves...what I meant is, getting them the "normal" way definitely should be allowed. But, if you have a 6-button controller config, you can perform all of them from the start of the game, with no special requirements needed. THAT, to me, should definitely be illegal if it's not mentioned in the manual. And yep, you hit the nail right on the head with characters. One point in Blaze's favor is that she has by far the best offensive special of the five allowed characters. Quite damaging, would be useful especially with the meter system in this game. She'd be my choice probably... -Josh

I use my PS2 Soul Calibur II joystick (not the crappy one you may have seen at game stores, but an awesome Japanese-style one made by Hori). For anyone who has Windows 2000/XP and wants to use a PS controller, don't bother with USB converters. There is something else I use which is far better and cheaper, albeit a little more complex. First, go to http://www.psxpad.com and install the driver from that site. Then, go HERE and order one of these. Note that it connects to the printer port. Finally, when you get that little adapter, plug it into the printer port and plug your controller into the adapter. If you have said driver installed, the controller should be working fully now. This thing is beautiful, all the directions and buttons work perfectly and there's NO input lag as far as I can tell. If only PS2-to-Dreamcast or Xbox converters were this good... -Josh

OK, just to complete the trifecta, I'll start a topic for this one. Now, I would suggest doing the American version of this game simply because it's harder than the Japanese one. Only thing that's missing gameplay-wise IIRC is Ash, which isn't really a factor for two reasons: 1. The fight against him isn't hard at all anyway. 2. If you could play as him, he would be an awesome character for fast times but a snoozefest to watch; punching is just about all he can do. Now, then, here are other characters besides Ash whom I wouldn't recommend using... Super Zan: Can only be used via a Pro Action Replay code. Super Skate: Punch combo is way too good, would be very effective but boring. Shiva: Also extremely boring, just keep doing his B+C for a damaging infinite combo. A shame too, really cool character otherwise. Roo: Clearly the worst character for a timeattack I think, as he does no damage compared to the others. Dr. Zan: Surely the worst of the four normal characters, he's rather lacking in damage and priority and can't use weapons as well as others can. And here's one character which I'm not sure about - Super Axel: As with Super Skate, there is a legit way to play as him. Difference is, IIRC his only advantage over normal Axel is a better defensive special move. Something else which I think should be banned is using a 6-button controller config to perform the improved versions of dash attacks. As you acquire stars throughout the game, your dash attack "levels up", which I think is pretty neat; with a 6-button controller, you can just perform them all from the start of the game. More boring that way, I think... Hm, maybe I'll post more later... -Josh

I think a run of this entire game would be pretty neat; making a separate video file for each game would probably be the best way of going about it. Thing is, I forsee a lot of Wheel use again like in the NES one...maybe you could try to show off all the different powers, but that would compromise time. Plasma is quite overpowered against bosses, I think you can keep hitting them with the shield or something like that...that and Hammer are the weapons I found to be the best against bosses (aside from really rare stuff like the Chameleon's Paint). Now, the big question I see with this run is: Do you want to get 100% in Milky Way Wishes to unlock the Arena (that IS required, right?), then beat that, or do you just want to zoom right through Milky Way? I think you have to complete 100% of everything else to unlock Milky Way, so the other games don't have this issue... Hmm... -Josh

Don't forget that SDA has some speedruns up which are incredibly long...they're split up into multiple parts, which is definitely the way to do it. I could see Zelda-type RPGs being good for a single-file timeattack video as they don't require leveling up. The NES Zeldas are obvious examples of this, and another one is Crusader of Centy (which was beaten in just under an hour). Now, as far as traditional RPGs go, the main ones for SNES I can see being done are Mystic Quest and Mario RPG. They're both just naturally short games; Mystic Quest doesn't take much leveling up (particularly if you opt to kill the last boss with Cure), and Mario will probably take even less once you get Mario's Super Jump (the Lazy Shell stuff at the end of the game would be a huge help as well). Another thing I just thought of for Mario: Could you possibly use rerecording to make the Geno Whirl get critical hits every time? That would be just ENORMOUS, as that move does 9999 damage. Anyway, to stay on topic, Secret of Mana probably would take forever, mainly because it still has the arbitrary hit/miss system of traditional RPGs (so you can't use your "bullet time" to dodge everything). Although, IF you could rerecord to make stuff miss, then I'm not sure... -Josh

Yep, I was expecting you to come into this thread right away. =) And you are right, I forgot about BEAH KNACKAA and its ability to hit multiple enemies. Definitely a big help for Axel. The best thing Max has to help him in such situations is the ability to use swinging weapons to hit both behind and in front of him. I can see the katana being of use in a timeattack, not sure about lead pipe with its lesser damage. The atomic drop hitting multiple enemies could also be very good. But yeah, a clear weakness for Max. Blaze I really don't see being a good character for this, but Skate...I forgot he can actually deal some damage. His rear grab attack hitting multiple enemies is also something which could be put to much use in a timeattack. Still seems to me like Max would be the best timeattack character because of his strength, but there are indeed other possibilities... Oh yes, just remembered something. How do you consistently get that trick at the end of level 2, the one where you only make one Jet appear and nothing else (that was it, right?), to work? I've gotten it once or twice, but never otherwise. -Josh

OK, I heart Sprint mention he's doing a Mania mode timeattack. Leaves me pretty psyched, seeing as his SoR1 movie was awesome. Now, I don't remember exactly, but I think he said he'd use Max. This would definitely be the right move...for legitimately beating Mania Mode he is arguably the best character (him or Axel), and with the power of savestates and slow motion his speed won't be a problem. He also has a couple moves which benefit GREATLY from said timeattack methods: 1. His tackle (forward+A). I expect to see much, MUCH whoring of this against bosses. Why? Because if the whole thing is blocked, it deals some of the most brokenly high damage I have ever seen (over two full lifebars or somewhere near that level of stupid). So, I would imagine, you could manipulate it so that bosses who can block do so to this move, every time. Shouldn't be that hard, they block most of it often when I play... 2. The third move in his punch combo (the hook). As you may or may not know, you can get 3 or even 4 hits out of this move. Definitely something I could see being helpful since you could get it to happen whenever you want. If you need something to finish them off with after this, you can go for a grab combo into jumping powerbomb if they have a lot of life left, or just turn around and do the B+C if they only have a bit. That's all I've got, don't remember anything enemy-specific besides tricks which would be worthless in a timeattack... Good luck, Josh.

The thing I don't like about the other guys in this game is, if you land their special moves, they take so long to taunt that they give the enemy free hits. So yeah, Ty is the man. Although I recall hearing that Buzz can airthrow people from like half the screen away... -Josh
