In the words of Seanbaby, "Thou Hath Wasted Thy F***ing Time". Seriously, that probably is the point of these rooms, to piss you off. Monster Party was another game like that...some doors had bosses you have to beat, others have powerups, and some are completely empty. -Josh

Post subject: Suggestion: Get rid of "superplay" in the title

As I understand it, Bisqwit and co. here are making absolutely sure to let people know how these movies were made. In another move that would fit this purpose, it would be best if we got rid of any mentions of "superplay" in connection with our videos, such as in the nesvideos site's title. Why? Well, this may mislead some people because "Superplay" already has a well-established definition. Basically, "SUPER PLAY" (or maybe "SUPERPLAY", I don't remember exactly) was a name put on videotapes which were published by Gamest Magazine in Japan and featured extraordinary skilled runs through various games. They are still being made today in DVD form (as seen in the Devil May Cry 2 one which has been put on the internet), but I am not sure who releases them now (as Gamest has been out of business for a few years now). Seem to recall hearing something about Famitsu GameWave or something like that...*shrug* Anyway, these videos are all completely legit runs, which is why it's especially risky for us to be using that phrase on sites like these. Any suggestions for a possible change? Just plain ol' "timeattack", or something else? Maybe "tools-assisted speedrun", which is the phrase that the DOOM speedrunning community uses for these types of movies... -Josh

#1 (by far): Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike. I play Oro, and my current goal is to become the best in the United States with him. #2: Guilty Gear, XX and #reload. I use Bridget, some think I'm the best with him in the US but I don't buy it (haven't played against Combofiend from California, who regularly places high in major tournaments) After that would be Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (HONDA BEST MAN) and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution (Slowly becoming competent with Wolf, still can't EDTEG though). Also various other fighters which aren't really big competitively here (the SFEX series, King of Fighters '98, Last Blade 2, SF3: 2nd Impact, TMNT Tournament Fighters, and the list goes on...) I'm sure you can see what my strongest genre is...if anyone here wants to play me on Kaillera or Zbattle in anything, I'm game. =) As for single-player games, I never focused too much on records or such. I could beat Contra and the first Ninja Gaiden without dying...I guess I'm decent at the Streets of Rage series, though I still have YET to ever beat Mania difficulty in #2. Oh, and Lezard, nice to see another SNK fan on here besides me! =) Seems like a lot of people love Mark of the Wolves, but it doesn't do a whole lot for me...still solid though. -Josh

Well the thing is, everyone conforming to GoodGen names would help a great deal in determining which ROM version would be needed to play a certain movie. Like I said before, Genesis games tend to have around 3-5 different versions (sometimes more), with slight differences which might cause desync. -Josh

This was pretty cool, nice job! The main thing I noticed was what you already said, it seems like some other weapons would serve you better against bosses. But very good otherwise... BTW, you should make sure to note that your movie only works with Revision 00 of the game. In Revision 01 it desyncs after a little while. -Josh

OK guys, I'm sure some of you already know about this, but it's EXTREMELY important. Reason being, most Genesis games have upwards of 3 or 4 versions (some can reach 8 or 9, I think), whereas NES and SNES games tend to only have 1-3 versions usually. An example of this is the Quackshot timeattack that was just posted here. It only works with Revision 00 of the game, as in Revision 01 it desyncs after a little while. For those who don't know how to do this, here are some instructions: 1. Download GoodGen from Zophar's Domain or another such site. 2. Unzip everything to C:\GoodGen 3. Place all of your ROMs in that GoodGen folder. 4. Go to Run and type in "command.com" to open up a DOS prompt. 5. Type "cd\" to go to the C drive, then "cd\GoodGen" to get into that directory. 6. Type "goodgen rename", and after a little while all your ROMs will have proper names. 7. Said ROMs will be in C:\GoodGen\GenRen , so place them back into your ROM folder. And there you have it. EDIT: Or alternately, as several people have noted, you can use a program like GoodGUI or GoodWindows to simplify the task greatly. Hoping this doesn't break any forum rules, Josh.

FCE Ultra = the best NES emulator, AFAIK. Problem is I'm not so sure it would work on a Linux computer, so Bisqwit might not be able to use it. *shrug* -Josh

OK, here's some info for anyone wanting to do this... - All characters have the same moves; their most important differences are in stats and jumpkicks. - The game rates everybody either an "A" or "B" in each of the three stats (Power, Speed, and Jump), but it's actually not quite that simple. That is, there are clear differences in Speed and Jump for everyone, and Blaze only does less damage than Axel and Adam for a few moves. Here is what a more accurate rating for each character would look like: AXEL: Power - A Speed - B Jump - C BLAZE: Power - A- Speed - A Jump - B- ADAM: Power - A Speed - C Jump - A - To further explain this (thanks to Truncated's FAQ!)...Axel and Adam do exactly the same damage with everything. Blaze deals slightly less damage for a few moves, the only significant ones being her jumpkick and rear attack. And while her jumpkick does less damage than Axel's, it has much better range and priority. So actually, I think she would be the best character for a timeattack... - Budget your use of the cop car appropriately; I imagine it could save quite a bit of time in the right areas. Remember, IT CANNOT BE USED IN THE LAST LEVEL. - Every character has an infinite combo that works on all normal enemies. Jab, then pause a bit, then jab again, then pause again, and repeat until they die. I seem to remember this also working well on a boss or two, maybe the fire-breathing fat guy? That's all I remember... -Josh

As to why I don't do a timeattack on this...well, I don't have Famtasia. Didn't Bisqwit say something about it not being freeware? And with VirtuaNES, I haven't figured out how to get slow-motion. Sorry if I have any stupid issues here... -Josh

Anyone heard of this? It's a pretty interesting game...you play in various levels where you have to grab a bunch of blue switches in order to unlock the exit, and you also are in a sort of "overworld" where you need to push blocks and turn off force fields in order to advance. There are 25 floors in the game (00 through 24), and each has 4 levels (plus some have bonus levels). This makes over 100 levels total in the game...but it turns out that you have to beat VERY few of them to actually win the game! See, there are a lot of level warps in this game, some which move you ahead and others which move you backward. They are found by grabbing a question mark in a level and entering an orange door that appears. Most of these are actually necessary for the completion of the game, including one backwards one. The reason for this is that some floors are dead ends; you need to use the warps to avoid them. In addition to this, most floors can be beaten without needing to complete any levels. You start out next to the exit on almost every floor, and most of the time you can just go into that exit without needing to do anything. The force fields, however, are what keep you from doing this for the whole game. There are a couple which guard floor exits, and some more which guard the levels with warps. There are two ways to turn them off, both of which are found in the levels: Keys, and bombs. With a key you just walk through the field and it disappears; with a bomb you must wait 3 game seconds for it to blow up the field. Thus, keys are preferable for speedrunning. Note that whenever you go through a warp, you lose all of your bombs and keys. So, as you can see, this is a very complex game. However, I have done the work of planning out a route. There is an issue here: My route involves many, many deaths, as that saves a TON of time in this game (your start with 4 lives, and there are many extras, so I can afford to use this often). For anyone interested, here is that route: 1. Go to the level in the lower-right corner of Floor 00, grab the key, then commit suicide (press Select). 2. Repeat #1. 3. Exit Floor 00. 4. Use a key and exit Floor 01. 5. Exit Floor 02. 6. Exit Floor 03. 7. Exit Floor 04. 8. Exit Floor 05. 6. Use a key for the force field in the upper part of Floor 06, then enter the level in the upper-left corner. 7. Warp to Floor 10. 8. Enter the level in the lower-middle part of Floor 10. 9. Grab the bomb in this level, then kill yourself (falling is faster than Select). 10. Exit Floor 10. 11. Move up before the force field in Floor 11 activates. Then, plant a bomb right by it and move up to avoid the explosion. 12. Exit Floor 11. 13. Exit Floor 12. 14. Exit Floor 13. 15. Exit Floor 14. 16. Enter the level in the center-ish part of Floor 15. 17. Grab the 1-up (heart icon) in this level, then grab the key and kill yourself with Select. 18. Use that key to unlock the force field at the bottom of Floor 15. Enter the level it guards. 19. Warp to Floor 20. GRAB THE EXTRA LIFE BEFORE YOU DO SO! 20. Enter the rightmost level in Floor 20. 21. Warp to Floor 23. 22. Enter the room closest to your starting point on Floor 23. 23. Grab one key, then fall into the pit to kill yourself. 24. Go clockwise around the level, and use the key to get through the force field in your way. Then enter the level in the lower-left corner. 25. Warp to Floor 21, grabbing the extra life directly in your path. 26. Exit Floor 21. 27. Enter the level closest to your starting point on Floor 22. 28. Warp to Floor 24, again grabbing the extra life along the way. 29. Enter the upper-right level in Floor 24. 30. Grab the key and press Select. 31. Enter the lower-right level in Floor 24. 32. Grab the key and press Select. 33. Use the keys on the two force fields to the left, then enter the level they guard. 34. Make it all the way to the left end of the level, and slide your way to an incredibly lame ending! I made a legit speedrun on VirtuaNES showing this route (except for one thing on Floor 15 which I didn't think of until after the run). If anyone has the American rom of this game and VirtuaNES 0.92, I can e-mail the VMV file to you if you're interested. The time is about 9:40 or so, there are many obvious and stupid errors but it should still be watchable. -Josh

Hm, I'd never been to speedruns.org before like last night and I found this on there... Excellent job! One question though: Do you HAVE to kill every boss? I remember a magazine at the time saying that only one boss has the key in each level, and fighting the others was a waste of time. Were they wrong? Thanks, Josh.

Hey all, this one might be interesting. From what I remember it's completely and utterly terrible, but some people like it. What intrigues me, though, is that it is apparently possible to beat in under 5 minutes on a real NES. Makes me wonder what we could do with the benefits of emulation... Oh yeah, and if you haven't seen Seanbaby's review of this game, you must. Here it is. Check out that whole site if you haven't, actually, hilariousness abounds. -Josh

Someone already did a timeattack of this at speedruns.org, check it out if you can (you have to register to download anything off of there, but it's real quick). Would probably give you a very solid base to work with, seeing as it's such a simple game and all... Oh yeah, and Magic Engine? Funk dat, you should be rooting for MAME rerecording. Turbo/PCE Splatterhouse just ain't the same as the arcade... -Josh

Hm, some excellent picks thus far. One big one nobody's mentioned yet: The Castlevania 1 critical hit glitch. Instant-killing the first boss definitely should be in there somewhere. Also possibly something from CV3, like when Alucard gets hit upward into a ceiling and then turns into a bat to fly through it. -Josh

The hadoken would be cool to see, but definitely not worth getting for a time attack. Yes you can kill pretty much any boss with it instantly...but I think that it would not make up for the time it takes to get it. -Josh

Now, I haven't seen your run yet (don't have Famtasia), but if you don't use the Jump & Slash then DO SO! Not only is it a major, major time-saver for bosses, but it's useful in other areas as it destroys all enemies and projectiles. The important thing to note is that even if you have it, you can still use the regular jumping slash by pressing Down+B in the air; this allows you to save your technique points for when you really need them. -Josh

There's a site called MAME Action Replay which does something like this, here is the URL: http://marp.retrogames.com One of the differences is that score, rather than time, is the main focus of this site. No slow-motion or anything is allowed; all games must be played according to Twin Galaxies rules (they even have special TG versions of MAME which disable pausing, savestates, and so on during recording). Also, the .inp's are not encoded into .avi's; rather, you must find the emulator version it was recorded with and use it to watch it. However, one neat thing about this site is the leaderboard. It has a scoring system for 1st, 2nd, and so on for each individual game, and these are totaled up to produce the overall leaderboard. This is somewhat flawed, in that many arcade games have multiple versions which play identically to each other, but I still think it's cool. =) Among the .inp's that I would most recommend (provided you can find all the various MAME versions needed) are BBH's Shock Troopers, any of SPELUNKER's replays of the Double Dragon series, and virtually anything by Japanese players. -Josh
