Whoa it's Dasrik! I figured the fighting-game people had just about dried up here, since both namflow and I disappeared. honda best man!!!!! Seriously though, one of my favorite games from back in the day, and excellent work! Obvious yes vote. Given this quality from your first submission, I (and others for sure) hope you'll stick around. -Josh

Did you use custom combos at all? If not, you should add some in there. In the arcade and 32-bit console versions of this game, he can actually perform a 100% custom...sweep, repeat dp+K,K a bunch, then finish with dp+K and do the full 8 kicks.

AnotherGamer: Umm...I haven't experienced any crashing glitches in SO2 or 3. SO1 is awful for this of course, VP has a few that are easily avoidable and that's about it. Maybe it's your console...at any rate, these "dumbasses" make almost the only video games I enjoy playing at all anymore so I felt I should say something. I haven't beaten this game (gotten through a good chunk of it), but given how this guy slaughtered my Wai Wai World movie I'm sure it's full of excellentitude. -Josh

Kicks: Just checked out your page...dude, your college has a fighting game club? Holy crap that is fricken sweet. Don't play much anymore, but I could type up some stuff for 3s if you guys want...I can explain basic and advanced techs for almost all the characters (Urien's about the only one I don't really know much). Oro especially, as he was my main character... Just wanted to see if you'd be interested. =) Thanks, Josh.

I have been considering this one. I figure you'd just use Cap the whole time, right? He deals more damage and has the dash, plus he can swing from the bars. -Josh

Thank you very much, I always felt this game could use a two-player movie. Right now I don't have the emulator so I can't watch this, though... And Bisqwit, feel free to obsolete my movie with this one. I didn't even know about frame advance at the time! =P -Josh

Well, I know you manipulate the enemies better than I did, but you still could have saved some time there. My run was no damage, and IMO you should either go that route or take damage whenever it saves time. Anyway, I watched the rest of it and couldn't spot a single mistake. Excellent work all around! -Josh

Alrighty, I watched this up through the Ghost Tunnel. So far, very good (loved the C-Serpent skip!), but there are a couple minor issues. I don't think you always wait until the enemy is as close as possible before you kill him. With special weapons this makes no difference, but with normal weapons it reduces the amount of time each swing takes. I could be wrong here though, but I think I saw a couple cases where you forgot to do this. More importantly, you can save time taking more damage in the first couple levels. Chapter 3 looked good in that department (well, up through the Ghost Tunnel anyway, haven't watched the rest), but you can save a little bit of time in 1 and 2. In 1, I think you can walk through the rat that gets in your way instead of killing him, and in 2 I *know* that walking through the fish is a little faster than killing them with the yoyo. But all that would add up to is like a second or two...very nice job thus far. Will post again after finishing it... -Josh

Hmm, my first obsoleted run I see...haven't watched it yet but I definitely will when I get the time! My movie specifically meant to take no damage, and I knew that the luck manipulation could probably have been better. Wouldn't have thought of skipping the C-Serpent though, that sounds like an awesome trick! This will almost certainly be a YES vote from me, just need to watch. Congratulations, Josh.

Wow, interesting stuff here! I've finally started working on something again...namely, Castlevania 3. I can't think of any *big* improvements to the existing movies, but I'll be eliminating 2 Famtasia vids if I can finish this. I also want to make a Grant movie which covers the remaining levels that haven't been done yet (sunken city, etc.). The problem is, I cannot figure out how Phil and Genisto were able to get so lucky with drops. Nothing I've tried has worked; could this bot possibly help out with that? I might think about doing the original CV as well if this plan does indeed work out. Sure, aside from Rockman 2, these are the BEST Famtasia movies around...but they're still Famtasia movies. Thanks, Josh.

Well, the manual is wrong then. The whip guy is John Morris, and the spear guy is Eric Lecarde (or Lecarte, I've seen both). The former is supposed to be somehow related to Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the latter is just some bishonen dude they made up. The swing move isn't totally useless, and John also has a jumping upward whip attack which should help in a few places. That's why I think there should be a run for each. -Josh

I hope you're kidding about the official names. =P And it's worth doing a run with each character, as they have slightly different routes and different timesavers in some areas. Also, Phil & Genisto said they aren't doing it because there's some issues with the emulation of this game. *shrug* -Josh

Yes from me. This is much more interesting than the other versions of this game, and easily different enough to be published no matter what Truncated might say. =P -Josh

Yep, todd is right. I think Acklame also did this with the LJN label, but there aren't any other cases I'm aware of. And I second the demand for a Spiritual Warfare TAS! =P -Josh

It's perfectly possible to record legit speedruns for MAME as is...there's an official Twin Galaxies version of the emulator that disables slowdown, saves, cheats, etc. during a recording. This is what's generally used for MARP, but that's a high-score site. Maybe someone should start a similar site for speedruns... And yes, I know a lot of arcade games loop endlessly. In those cases I would advise just doing the first loop, like we do at this site. -Josh

Hey all...I'm not really interested in making any more movies for the time being. So with that, I will reveal what I have found to improve in this game in case anyone wants to try it. First of all, I didn't use frame advance for my previous movie. Minor improvements are possible on all bosses if you take advantage of it, most notably in level 3 and the driving stages. Minor bug: Say you're running under a platform/ledge/wall/etc. that ends at some point. If you jump so that the back of your sprite touches the end of the ledge, you'll get pushed forward a little bit. This saves a few frames but can be applied in a lot of places. More important bug: If you jump toward a ladder and press B exactly 3 frames (well, either 2 or 3, I forget which) before you grab it, you'll slide down the ladder at normal falling speed. This saves quite a bit of time in quite a few places. That's about it. Under 13 minutes is easily possible, I'd say around 12:55 or something like that would be optimal. -Josh

Enhasa: Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, FF5 was a step backward from 4 in everything except gameplay (I played all the SNES ones at around the same time, so there's no nostalgia coming through here). The graphics were worse as I recall, and the music was nowhere near the level of the others (Gilgamesh's theme and a couple others are all that I find to be memorable). The plot and characters are by far the most bland of any FF since the NES days (and I've played on both the translated ROM and the PSX version). And even the gameplay wasn't all good; every character in FF4 was truly unique, and the job system renders everyone in 5 generic. Plus chemists are far more broken than anyone in 4. Frankly, I still feel that FF6 has possibly the best overall soundtrack of any game, ever. There's a whole bunch of things wrong with it (I feel it could really use a full-blown remake, but that's for another topic), but the music is just awesome. Oh yeah, and I'm with you on the Minibosses/NESkimos. The only "cover band" I recall liking is Game Over. A metal singer who can actually SING...who'da thunk it? =P -Josh

At times, it would have been better for Quietust to have waited a few time units before finishing the level in order to get a lower input time. This run isn't as optimized as Sonic 3 is, because Sonic 3 doesn't suffer from these situations.
I think Sonic 3 has these situations as well. Both movies do not aim for real time, but in-game time in each level, because it makes for a more skillful display. Personally I also think the SMB movies shouldn't have cared about the fireworks, but that's just me... -Josh

Yes, but it saves in-game time since the menu doesn't count toward that. And since in-game time is the traditional standard for speedruns... But I agree wholeheartedly, that glitch is awful. -Josh

The Ninja Gaiden games would have no more than a few frames of improvement each (at most), unless someone discovers new glitches...there's almost no luck manipulation involved, so they're easy to optimize. I'm considering doing both the Alucard and Sypha routes in Castlevania 3, using the American version since it's more difficult. Contra and Super C are just begging for 2-player vids. Basically, I think almost any of the Famtasia vids that are still up could be improved by a decent amount. Castlevania stands out as probably the most difficult of those... Oh yeah, and I think Phil's admitted that Castlevania 4 is improvable by 10 seconds or so. -Josh

Hmm...the only one I'd feel at all comfortable with is X2, and I don't know if Blechy's still working on it or not. Neat idea, though... There are a lot of very good non-star movies I could see myself improving, FWIW. -Josh
