Well, my slower HotW1 looks virtually no different from before, so no biggie. I'm finally back to where I was before, movie is up as always. HotW2 is 1 frame faster through some better movements, and Elsewhere is 2 frames faster. Actually, HotW2 could have been 2 frames faster, but I needed to land on the teleporter 1 frame later than optimal; this is needed to manipulate the acid drops at the beginning of Elsewhere. Now, FINALLY, it'll be time for Windy City. Need to test the upper and lower path there... -Josh

Same here, this is excellent so far! I liked the last movie a lot, so this should end up being one of my favorites when it's through. BTW, totally offtopic...are you the Shun player Namflow? I was pretty good friends with the Ohio VF crew before I moved out of Columbus, and heard a bit about you from them. -Josh

It's that series of three one-block gaps at the very beginning of the level. I had to fly a tad differently from before in order to be able to run across all three of them. Flying in general is kinda random like this...note that my flying in USM1 is a little bit different from the old movie; that wasn't intentional, but what I had to do. Same kinda deal here. Seems like I should just get it over with and move on, it looks like... -Josh

Alright, HotW1 is about to break me. No matter what I do, it's one frame slower than in the old movie. I did figure out how to manipulate luck so that I can crawl under that cannon block...but that's slower anyway, it turns out; since you have little time to accelerate before the drop ahead, you move forward more slowly while falling and thus lose time while flying to the top of the hill. The problem is that I HAVE to make a few different movements from the last movie in order to cross one-block gaps at the beginning. That's where I lose that 1 frame, and there doesn't seem to be a way to get it back... Should I just give up and move on with my loss? -Josh

That is the one thing I cannot stress enough: FRAME ADVANCE. Especially for a game this fast and precise, there is almost no way to approach perfection without it. Also, and it's not just you but other people as well...only submit a movie if you think it is worthy of this site. If you want to host a WIP, try Filespace, that's what I do and it works fine. Just keep at it, my first couple movies were pretty awful too (I don't mean submissions, there were a couple others before I started doing so). -Josh

It allows for competition and refinement on certain sections of the game. The Doom speedrunning community has always had both single-segment runs of an entire game/episode and runs of each individual level, for example. Actually, the videos like Doom Done Quick and Quake Done Quick are exactly like this one except with multiple players; after a player completes one part, the next one inherits his health/ammo/etc. and completes his own with that. Multi-segment is a better way to showcase what humans can actually do, essentially. -Josh

Nah, it's not just total speed, the bounce is faster too. Look at somewhere like the end of USM3, where I jump on an enemy, and compare it to either HotW stage. My suspicion is that the bounce adds the same amount of velocity, and the faster falling speed thus makes the bounce faster. -Josh

Gah, forgot about that flag thing! Sorry, won't do it again. =P And don't worry, I only did all this because of that bug, everything else was unexpected. Don't see any other reason to touch those early levels now... Oh, just remembered something you need to add to the tricks page (at least, I don't see it): Falling onto enemies gives you more of a boost than jumping on them (at least with "normal" characters and Micromax). This is very noticeable in Hills of the Warrior I. -Josh

Well, Filespace was down for awhile, so I got even more done. The new movie is up through Isle of the Lion Lord now, so check it out! I'm even more glad that I redid all of this, because almost every level was improved from before in some way. Here's a rundown... HWP1 = 5 frames faster. I already covered this. HWP2 = 3 frames. Improved double bounce before ghost blocks, and I think I got a little better luck with the hand at the end too. Elsewhere 1 = 19 frames! Watch it and you'll know...can't believe I missed this before! USM1 = 3 frames. This is entirely because the last set of ghost blocks pushes me downward a bit. USM3 = 2 frames. At that last giant pit, I keep my bounce speed during the whole flight this time. Lion Lord = Same time. Not really much to say...oh yeah, I get an extra life here instead of USM3 (because I skipped the flag in USM2, remember). USM2, what little of it I did, is self-explanatory. And the Elsewhere was kinda tricky, this was the best flight path I found; everything else forced you to stop and wait for Cyclone to rise at some point. With this way you move forward the entire level, which looks a lot better IMO. So, hope you all like it, and as always feel free to comment! -Josh

Alright, I personally want to keep the trick, and it sounds like that would be the right move. And yes, I knew about that in HWP1. The damage in HWP2 actually makes you faster within the level, so I prefer that, but thanks anyway! Expect a new movie up through the second Elsewhere later today...I've got some surprises in store for y'all. =) -Josh

Alright, guys...I'm in a pickle. In USM1, I just figured out a way to land on the teleporter 1 frame faster than before (floating onto it). Thing is that if I do that, the diamond trick won't be possible (without wasting huge amounts of time, anyway). So, either be 3 frames faster or show off a cool trick...what do you all think? Thanks, Josh.

Alright, I lied. My new movie up through HWP1 is uploaded now. I wouldn't have done this, except that after much trial and error I managed to improve this by 5 frames over my old movie! Besides the bug, I also found a better way to get through the wall-climbing section. That's also the one level that desyncs a lot on me, so thank god I'm through with it now! As for next update...if I find any notable improvements to levels I'll update. If not, I'll do so after the second Elsewhere. -Josh

That's Gen-An Shiranui from the Samurai Shodown series. Token "oddball" character in the vein of Blanka, and he even has a rolling attack too. I recognize him and Felicia (cat-girl from the Darkstalkers series), but not the baseball player or the ninja girl... -Josh

Well, I've had absolutely no luck with hexediting, so since it's still fairly early on I'm going to redo it. Actually, this is good because I've decided to change the direction of the run. My current route didn't really fit into anything...it wasn't the longest (Cyclone saves way too much time for that) or anything else, really. So now, I'm going to do as many levels as possible. This will probably be more interesting than what I was planning before, and the only change I'll have to make to what I did before is going to the Elsewhere in USM2. Cyclone makes that a total joke of a level, and I still remember the other stuff well, so hopefully it shouldn't take TOO much time to get back to where I was before... I'll post an update after that Elsewhere. -Josh

No, that video was made by Ronin. There was a link to Reciprocal's at one point...it was a WMV or AVI or something with no sound. I don't think it's around anymore, though...at any rate, people more knowledgeable than I suspect that it is cheated. His/her buddies are also the ones claiming they can beat Genisto's SMB3 times, so you be the judge... -Josh

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!! While messing around in HotW2, I discovered a new glitch with Berserker that allows you to break walls and continue without losing any forward momentum. To do it, just jump when you're close to the wall (it has to be very precise, we're talking an exact amount of pixels away here); you will jump, break three blocks, then hit your head on the fourth one up if there is a fourth. I tested this out in HWP1, and it allows you to reach the cannon blocks 4 frames faster than before. ...Does anyone out there have any hex-editing advice for a total noob? If not I will redo this, as this bug will definitely come in handy in future levels and it would look strange not to use it there. -Josh

Hey all, I think this would be the most interesting SNES beat-em-up for our treatment. Why? A freakin' HUGE number of routes, that's why. It's going to take a lot of effort to figure out the best one, I will say... I've played this game a lot and can offer some useful advice, including the following: 1. Use the Japanese version (Rushing Beat Shura). Music is the default setting (in the US version, boring background noise is), and there's a lot more of it. Also, there are a few enemies that were removed from the US one (i.e. mechanical spiders). It gives you more lives, but that's the only way in which it is easier. Oh yeah, and the super moves look much cooler. =P 2. This game is all about throws, punch combos cause almost no hitstun and are pretty useless in general. With luck manipulation you may be able to get something out of them, though. There are also A-button attacks which drain your life...some are good, others not. 3. Dick and Elfin (Flynn and Echo in the US one) are far and away the two best characters. They're the two fastest AND also more damaging than anyone besides Jimmy (Prokop)...you have no reason to ever use anyone else. See, after grabbing an enemy, they can hit them 3 times before throwing; everyone else except Jimmy can only do two hits, and Dick and Elfin do just as much damage per hit as them. Although Jimmy does more damage per grab than anyone, he is WAY too slow to be worth considering (it's only a little more damage, we're not talking SoR2 Max here!). Elfin is much faster than anyone else...her dash attack is going to be very important for forward movement. Her throws are pretty straightforward. Her A-button attack is crap (a dinky 1-hit somersault kick), but it's a small price to pay for everything else. Dick is the second-fastest character, same strength as Elfin. His A-button attack is actually good (multi-hit dash punch, good damage). When throwing with him, hold up/left or up/right to throw them farther, or left or right to throw them straight down (quicker, same damage). 4. This game has a rather odd feature...if you throw an enemy into another enemy, the thrown enemy takes double damage and the guy on the receiving end takes nothing. This is why it's a very good thing that Dick and Elfin can throw people so far...the video should contain lots of 2-4x damage throws. If you're only fighting one enemy, Flynn's normal throw is better than the upward one. 5. By holding X+A, you can execute super moves that hit everything on the screen for massive damage. However, you only get two of them per life (forget if that's per character, or just two period) and cannot acquire any others. And they don't work on the final boss, so don't save them for him...but everything else is fair game. 6. In quite a few rooms, you don't have to fight anyone. Just make your way to an exit. 7. While grabbing an enemy, you are invulnerable to projectiles. Might come in handy. 8. OK, here's the controversy...if you grab an enemy, then move the controller in a half-circle motion from back to forward and press Y (like Dhalsim's Yoga Flame in Street Fighter II, essentially), you will perform a much more powerful throw that also launches the enemy farther. This is not documented in the American manual, don't know about the Japanese one...should this be allowed? If so, there's almost no reason to use any other throws (delivering a final blow is the only thing I can think of). Another one I'm not sure about is Dick's "Super Saiyan Mode". When he's below 10% life, hold R (the block button...don't see it coming into play with luck on your side, but you never know) and perform the SF2 fireball motion and press X. It's a pain to execute for some reason, but ridiculously cheesy; you turn into a palette swap of the last boss, become invincible, and can punch everything for stupid damage. You may be able to use this just once per life, I don't remember exactly, but it's definitely awesome if allowed. Alright then, that's all for now, just wanted to get some info out there. -Josh

The only thing I've heard regarding that is a ZSNES run from Reciprocal (the fellow/lady/whatever behind The Truth Garden). It is apparently faster than Neuhaus's movie, but its legitimacy is highly questionable. Remember, even without our tools it's possible to create a cheated speedrun with emulators; turbo/programmable controllers could have been used, it could have been played on a really slow computer, etc. If any of you have seen the SMW timeattack with the rock music playing in the background...that was made with ZSNES, savestates, Camtasia or another similar program (not sure), and a video-editing program. I highly doubt any legitimate movie beats our SMW or SMB3 (I've heard this one too) times... EDIT: To stay on topic, I would like to see Run Saber. It's a nice little Strider clone, 2-player simultaneous IIRC. I second Rocky Rodent, that can be fast if done right. 2-player Smash TV = teh rox. For pure speed you always want to take the routes that lead to the hidden prize rooms, as they allow you to skip a lot of each level. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Claymates. The mouse is like Sonic on crack, and the game offers a lot of interesting shortcuts and good character variety (much like Kid Chameleon in that sense). And call me crazy, but I would KILL for a 2-player Peace Keepers run. The game has a ton of different routes, so it would take a lot of effort to figure out which is the best. As a matter of fact, I'll start a thread for it right now... -Josh

Well, the Elsewhere results in longer level time, so I just took that (get to keep Cyclone a little longer, yay!). The new movie, which stops at Windy City, is uploaded. HotW2 is just really ugly, and there is nothing more I can do about that (yes, even that flight over the hill at the beginning is the fastest way to get through that part). It looks like you can bounce-fly on a lot of these guys, but you really can't for various reasons. At least it's short... Oh yeah, there's one part there where I land from a bounce flight on the middle of a platform. That has zero effect on the time because I keep that speed until I fall. The Elsewhere is pretty self-explanatory. I discovered by accident that I can manipulate the acid drops, which comes into play at the end (before, it forced me to jump later than I wanted to). So now, Windy City. I'm going to have to bump up that block at the beginning, which uses up quite a bit of time but still less than avoiding damage in USM1. There's an upper and lower path, so this will be interesting to test... -Josh

Well, actually, it turns out that getting Red Stealth in Elsewhere costs you time. I've gotta stay true to my word of picking paths based on their lengths alone, so I may have to take Berserker...time to test out that flag! -Josh

Thanks a lot for the compliments, guys! All of your concerns can be explained... It's possible to bounce on the guy after the spikes and fly to the upper path, but that's actually slower than what I do. You have to wait for the spikes to fly over you, then jump on him. With the two ghost blocks, you have to jump over that pit. If you fall and spin, you WILL fly right into the edge there. The flight to the rubber pit is actually only 1 frame below optimal (you're going to fly over a bit of it no matter what), and that is needed to run over that 1-block gap ahead. And you can't afford to crawl under that damn cannon block. It would be a lot faster, but it manipulates the enemy ahead to take the lowest spikes; this forces you to wait for all the spikes to fly over you, and that takes forever. Thus, what I do there is necessary for proper luck manipulation. =/ Keep the suggestions coming, guys. I'm glad to see you're enjoying it! =) The next level presents an interesting quandary...you need to get Berserker at the end to reach the flag, and Elsewhere has a nice shortcut with Red Stealth (whose helmet can be found just past the hole at the beginning of that level). Hmm... -Josh
