SMB3 Walkathon WIP I needed a change of pace (har har) from the SMB3 warpless, so I started a walkathon using Alden's route and rules suggested above (B button used only for accessing inventory and opening chests). This WIP is pretty well optimized, and gets both whistles in world 1. Let me know what you think; I'll probably finish this at some point and may submit if it ends up looking good.
I'm aware this was a while back, but I've just now noticed the new discussion on the smb3 walkathon run. Glad to see my analysis/attempts haven't been forgotten. :) This WIP looks pretty good and I'd be interested in seeing it complete. Doing a comparison though, my world 1-1 turned out to be 3 frames faster likely due to corner boosting. I haven't compared 1-2 yet, but if you decide to stick with that route you can use my attempt to compare the first two levels at least. (this WIP was for the 1,2,6,7,8 route Alden mentioned before) Good luck.

Yep. Though I don't play as much as I use to. I mainly make beatmaps now. :) Username is the same one as here.

I've seen a bunch of glitchy stuff in red/blue/yellow, but this was really unexpected. Definite yes vote, and yes to obsoleting the green run.

It isn't as entertaining as the monopoly run, but I think it would be interesting to see how fast solitaire can be done on the nes. Yes vote for me.

Hmm...Unless I miscounted, I don't think you'll be able to visit all the mushroom houses due to lack of hammers. There is 1 hammer in both World 2 and 3, making 2, but each of those must be used in their respective worlds in order to get to certain mushroom houses. World 2: Required in order to reach the whistle and mushroom house w/the frog suit. World 3: You have to use the hammer to get to the boat where 3 mushroom houses can be reached. There's also a mushroom house w/a tanooki suit that can only be reached with a hammer in World 4, but since World 4 doesn't have a hammer (if I recall correctly), you might have to skip a mushroom house.

It's interesting to see someone attempt 100% in smb3. Definitely looking forward to the wip. Btw, what are you considering 100%? I think for starters it should be all levels (required and optional) and all hammer bros. Not sure what other criteria would have to be considered to make it a 100% run though.

Yeah, that's what I meant. My smb3 rom wasn't labeled, but I rechecked and it was PRG1. Sorry about that.

does left+right have the same effect when not holding B?
Assuming you're referring to the All-Stars version of smb3, yes, but it would sort of defeat the purpose of a walkathon methinks.
The movie desynched at the Sun Level for me.
Hmm...If you're using FCEU 0.98.15, have the [U] [!] rom, and don't have any cheats on, then I'm not sure why it's desyncing. Is anyone else having the same problem?

*sigh* It looks like this is the end of the road for me. After looking at World 2, I didn't really see much of anything that can make a walkathon entertaining. If anyone wants to take my wip and continue onward, they may, though I'll be surprised if it turns out entertaining in the end. I've done this run many times unassisted, but when it comes to TAS standards, I just don't see this run going anywhere. The most entertaining places would likely be: 1-2 1-5 2-2 (if it is possible to keep your speed on those hills) Sun Level (if it's possible to get a boost from the twister, but doubt it) 6-4 (using the spinner things to make you go faster) World 6 3rd Fortress (many hard things to get past without b) 7-3 (bunch of hills) 7-8 (hardest level in the entire run, though 7-7 is also possible without b) World 8 Airship (is possible without b) I guess I'll have to look for another game to TAS, but for now, Peace! Edit: Also if anyone's curious, here's my original run of the whole route just so you can have an idea of where I was going with this (Note: this was before I knew I could keep my speed when sliding down hills) http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/29/1392707/Super%20Mario%20Bros%203%20b.fcm It isn't optimited by a long shot (I'll let the # of rerecords speak for itself), but regardless, It complete smb3 while only using the b button 4 times. (the minimum)

Well guys, thanks to your advice, I was able to complete the 1st World 125 frames faster (not compared to the original, but to the 1st improved run), I'm also happy to say that every level was improved (except for the castle, which I ended up even). The improvements mainly come from corner boosting wherever possible and just using the 1st hill in 1-2. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1191593279/Super%20Mario%20Bros%203b4.fcm Individual level comments: 1-1: Saved 6 frames due to corner boosting. 1 cb opportunity wasn't taken cause I like going up in the clouds. :) 1-2: Biggest improvement by far. To be more entertaining, I go through the level backwards. (the hammer bro was being an ass though, which is why I delay grabbing the thing at the end.) Fortress: Same as before, with 2 cb's. Hammer bros: 5 frames faster. 1-5: Basically same as before. I get a bit lucky with freebie frames here. 1-6: 1 cb was barely possible, other than that, not much different. Castle: I'm pretty sure this can't be any faster. I really appreciate everyone helping me out. Especially JXQ, for all his knowledge from doing the warpless run, P.J, for pointing out a trick I didn't know, and Tompa, who showed me that even when it looks perfect, it might still have room for improvement. Based on the respones, I've decided to continue with my original plan and only use B for items. May I continue to World 2 now? :)

The glitches were really entertaining to watch. That and the fact it's over a minute faster than the published movie both get a yes vote from me.

Hmm...In that case, which would you guys rather see? A run that only presses B to use items on the overworld (my original plan), or a run where B is never used to accelerate (but every other use of B is fair game)? If the latter, than which worlds would you like to see? (seeing that I could get the whistles in 1-3 and in World 2 with those rules) The fastest route obviously would be to get both whistles and go straight to World 8, but I don't know if it would end up being entertaining in the end.

Corner boosting, like I said
So you're saying that falling from corners gives you a boost in speed, or something else? I didn't notice much difference when trying it out.

I think that getting the mushroom in 1-1 and getting the fire flower in the castle would have been faster when killing the boss. Getting the fire flower in the ship would probably have sped up the boss fight aswell.
You forgot one little detail. You have to press B to throw fireballs.
How come you couldn't use the 1st slope in 2-2 to keep all your speed.
Wow, just tested this out and it looks like that will be possible. I just assumed that you couldn't get up there without the block. <_<
I doubt that you read my post, oh well =P. You can't do a walkathon run... You will be stuck in the pyramid. And the first castle in world 7 is also impossible to do.
I did read your post, but I didn't see where either of those tricks can be used in World 1 (I doubt the faster autoscrolling is possible without b) I'm also aware of the levels that are not possible without b. If you read the details from the 1st page, I'm planning to use b 4 times (the minimum required) to use items to finish the game. It's technically still considered a walkathon since I never use b in the individual levels. 1. Use a hammer to get to the whistle in World 2 2. Use the whistle to get to World 6 3. Use a P-wing to beat World 7 1st Fortress. 4. Use Jugem's Cloud from World 6 to skip 7-9.
http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/636256404/SMB3Walkathon.fcm 7 frames faster. Should have been 8 if the HB wasn't an ass.
Congrats for improving 1-1. How did you go about doing it? Both of our speeds were 18 the entire time. Did hitting/stomping things cause lag on my part, or was it something else? In the meantime, looks like I got a lot of improvements to make. >_>

Well, I managed to improve World 1 by 97 frames. This was mainly due to optimizing the jumps in 1-2. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/581644803/Super%20Mario%20Bros%203b3.fcm Differences from the last WIP: 1-1: Same as before (didn't see any improvement here) 1-2: I jump at different times in order to keep my speed (thanks to JXQ for this tip) Fortress: No more studdering in the spike room, was able to grab the "?" as early as possible this time. Hammer Bro: Saved time by jumping on him instead of going under him and jumping. This makes it a bit more entertaining (methinks). 1-5: Level layout prevented me from maintaining my speed like in 1-2. Still saved ~4 frames, however. 1-6, Castle: Tried to save frames where possible, but otherwise not too much different than before. Next stop, World 2! Edit: Saved another 21 frames by grabbing the wand at the lowest point rather than the highest point. Thanks again to JXQ for pointing this out.

Whoops, I went back and checked and I noticed you did the warpless run, JXQ, not Genisto. (though he did do the warps run) To avoid confusion, I edited my previous post. And thanks for the tips Derakon and JXQ. As soon as I find time, I'll experiment with keeping my speed in 1-2 and 1-5, then work on World 2. Btw, poking the memory won't have an effect on the recording will it, as long as I load the previous state?

Hey! I remember reading your topic while searching to see if anyone else has discussed a b-less smb3 run. It's great to see that you're still here. Back when I first started TASing the run, I didn't know it was possible to keep mario's speed while sliding down hills until I saw your WIP. One thing I'll have to figure out next is how to manipulate the hammer bros in World 2. Since they're on the side you can't see, how do you know which direction they go when you beat a level? I noticed that JXQ was able to do it in the warpless run several times. Did he go through the levels and restart if they weren't in the right place, or is there a place in memory where the hammer bros. positions are stored?

I remember playing this years ago and recently found the rom again. I did some test runs and it seems that it can turn out to be an interesting TAS. I'm aware there's already a run of the NES version of Blues Brothers, but the SNES version is very different. -39 Levels, starts out easy then gets really hard. (in single player, not sure about multiplayer) -You can now throw records (discs), used to kill enemies/open breakable walls. -Many more obstacles (including electicity which kills you in 1 hit) -Improved graphics, sounds, etc. (of course) -2 player games are cooperative, which could make a TAS even more interesting (haven't tried it, however) In addition, it's also fast-paced like the NES version. So what do you guys think?

Wow! Having played in symphonic band for 7 years (and still playing), I gotta say that is one of the best midis I've ever heard, Rising Tempest. I especially liked the combination of piano and strings in some parts. You did an awesome job! *saves*

Are you getting a full P-bar without pressing B?
Technically, no, since my P-bar never actually fills up, but on the levels in which I slide in order to gain speed, I'm actually going above full running speed most of the time. I spent time watching my horizontal speed with the memory watch tool. Here's what I found. Maximum running speed: 38 Maximum sliding speed (using the hill in 5-1): 3F (I peak at 3C on level 1-2) Sadly, however, even if I jump at the 1st possible frame, I still lose 1 point of speed with each jump. (In 1-2, I went from 3C to 3B, then to 3A, etc. until I finished the level with a speed of 37). On 1 jump near the end, however, I didn't lose any speed for some reason. (possibly because it was 38, the max running speed, but I'd have to do more testing to be sure. I'm confident that I'm jumping at the 1st possible frame each time)
