I wasn't talking about "doomsday scenarios". I realize the risk that anything at all would happen is very, very minimal, but why take it if there are lots of other places to share roms at on the net?
*leaves this thread*
@moozooh: If the irc-channel associated (not on legal grounds, but still) with this site would be extensively used to illegally distribute roms, I bet that after a few years game developers/publishers would start to care more about the main site.
I guess the point of why these forums are so strict about the rom issue is to prevent lots of people from coming here for roms, telling their friends to come here too, basically turning the irc into a warez channel. The line has to be drawn somewhere! I don't think any of the admins would care if members exchanged roms secretely and in private because that's entirely their own thing. But at the point where there was a tolerated open request or an open "thanks", other people would realize that they could come here to obtain roms and they would come in hordes. And that's not the point of this community at all.
I know, I'm just some random guy, so feel free to ignore this, but hacks are roms. Distributing patches is fine though, as they don't contain any copyrighted material.
Distributing the patch and the prepatched rom should be even worse, as it's easily possible to get 100% of the original rom from that.
Hm, I think a great part of the "general audience" doesn't like to read movie descriptions and thus they'd think it was played by 4 different people, provided they don't really understand the concept of what a TAS is yet. So that would maybe make them not so impressive to first time viewers.
Edit: Huh? What am I reading? Did I seriously write that? o_o
Well, this run just had to be done sooner or later. xD
I hope there's going to be a link to this movie in the description of the any% run, as that's the way I'd like to see it published. The run wasn't too exciting to watch for me because I had already seen most of the strategies, but it's still an obvious yes-vote.
I have to critisize one very minor flaw in my opinion though, and that is that you didn't showcase stuff like the spindash cancel during the awkward wait in FB2.
Has it been confirmed that you can't cross the leftmost level border in the Sandopolis Zone by letting yourself eject from the wall btw? It doesn't work because Sonic's hitbox is too tall? Just asking because I'm not sure iirc.
It's not really a class though, but a bunch of Japanese comedians that get punished (f.e. for losing sport bets, but sometimes also just for the sake of it) in these so-called "batsu games". The show is called "Gaki no Tsukai". My favourite episode is the matsumoto no reaction pie jigoku one, but most people like their silent library episodes best.
That was part of the point I was trying to bring across with my post. I didn't want to offend anybody, just ridicule this discussion (and on another level point out that that guideline could be worded more clearly in many ways, though I also think to a great part it's just nitpicking). So yea, I'm being sarcastic in that entire post. I thought I had dropped enough hints, but now I can't tell if you didn't take at least part of the post too seriously. That's just my kind of humor, I'm sorry.
I agree with your request though as it seems some people take these few words way too literally and/or seriously.
"(if) there is a" means there is at least one, or maybe more. You'd have to replace "a" with "exactly one" (or similar constructs) to get that other meaning.
As the sentence continues with a reference to "it" later on, however, it seems to be "retroactively presupposing" (Hidgens, 1985: 137) that there is in fact only one. This already gently hints at the fact, that "the creator" of these rules didn't really take all possible constellations of runs/submissions into consideration when typing that legendary sentence.
"unless the new ROM is obviously better" supposes that the judges possess an equally superior intellect and objective taste in ROMs as "the creator". Nowhere has it been defined what constitutes as "obviously better", therefore interpretations as to "the true spirit" (Warp, 2010) of the rule vary greatly, even among leading scholars.
Also, as it seems, you are only allowed to use a new ROM if you can show how it should be compared to the existing movie, and thus one would have to effectively be able to illustrate how to compare apples to oranges (oranges are obviously better btw). Only few in the history of TASVideos have thus far managed to accomplish this immensly difficult feat.
Btw, how "new" does that ROM have to be anyway? Doesn't that wording alone make switching back to an "old" ROM impossible? Discuss.
For the hitpoints it would have been nice if you had mentioned that on some rare games, it won't subtract hitpoints, but count the times you've hit the enemy instead. Also that the y-address can be either 0 at the top or 0 at bottom or that speed doesn't get negative with every game when running to the left. Those kind of things can often cause some confusion. I would go comment on ustream, but I don't want to sign up there. :X
I think in difficult cases (Sonic isn't one of these imo) the authors should probably ask the target audience and just make the run people are demanding for. There's no need to define that kind of category unambigously imo. Obsoletion issues would have to be decided on a case by case basis.
And if the author isn't sure whether their new low-glitch run, with which they'd want to obsolete an older one, would still be considered low-glitch, I think they'd be smart enough to raise the topic before finishing the run anyway. There'd be some tough decisions to be made every now and then, but I don't think there's a viable way around it.
Thanks, this post of yours is pure gold for me. ^^
Lol yea, I'll avoid the newer movies as much as possible. But I feel obligated to mention Star Trek and Avatar at least (I try to keep away from the Matrix though because I have a feeling everybody is tired it by now because it had been so ridiculously overyped. I agree it's good of course.. But with all these games and sequels to it, discussions in school about it in every subject, etc.. It really was just way over the top imo).
I'll write you a pm about the other part of your message.
Thanks a lot moozooh. I would proceed as you suggested if I was interested in making a serious study on that matter. But I'll be graded mainly through other criteria, for example how well suited my analysis would be for the general public who aren't so much interested in theoretical/philosophical standpoints, but in how bad and terrible this world can be (the empathic/emotional side). If I made it very intellectual and smart, I'd only get a bad mark. In my country's universities it's a lot more about selling yourself well, not so much about the quality of your work. Is it different in Russia?
I'll check out the short stories on that list though. ^^
As well as the links in the other two posts. Thanks again.
I'm really surprised by the high number of replies I've gotten so far. :X
Thanks a lot Randil, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. :)

I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to achieve... i think you're trying to get an overview of science fiction in relation to reality?
Well, yes. But I was also hoping to find some very personal opinions on which pieces would be best suited to have a look at. I'm not very much into science fiction myself and Google can only spit out facts and links, but I'm also interested in personal/emotional aspects of it, if that makes any sense. x_x
Still thanks, for googling it for me! ^^
(I'll have a look at District 9 :X)

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but most Philip K. Dick books bring up larger philosophical issues like the meaning of identity and reality. He's kind of a nutjob which is why I like him. Also try Sirens of Titan or Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut. Not quite traditional sci fi but good reads.
Haha, I like those kind of nutjob people too, maybe because I'm one of them myself. ^^ Sirens of Titan, I'll definitely have a look at as well. I already know Slaughterhouse 5, I don't regard it as sci-fi enough though. Thanks! :D
Sorry that so far, the answers are only directed at me and my problem. I really have a bad feeling bothering you guys with this. :( I create way too many topics that are only about myself. It's a very bad habbit of mine..
