I loled. Windows 7 might still be fine, but alternative OSes seem to get more interesting to me with every new Windows version released. It almost has a political touch to it, like Windows is right winged and Linux is left. On topic, I wouldn't care about specs at all if I was her. I'd buy one that's cheep, looks nice to me, doesn't get too hot and has a long battery life. I made the mistake to only care for the prize when I bought mine. Specs are only important for playing games, encoding videos and other stuff that only nerds do. ;)

Wow, I love those improvements. o_o Congrats to the three guys who've found these. ^^ And thank godness Launch Base 1 got improved. Entertainment wise it used to be the worst part of the run imo. That spike glitch can't be used anywhere else?

Btw. it's not like this comes as a suprise to us. Jijos route is heavily based on our TAS-route and we helped him planing here and there. We also saw this run when it was being made, through live streaming. ;)

One of the few runs where I couldn't resist showing it to my friends before it's completed. :p

Wow, it really is the single most optimized run so far it seems. Mad props to NameSpoofer. ;) And the only in game frame versions are so much more watchable than the normal encodes for SMetroid runs. Thx for the encode. ^^

@FODA: Well, yes, that's one way to look at the problem. But if punishments were harder, new problems would come up and some problems that are already there would get worse.

What's the difference between an excuse and a reason? Point of view? Does the consumer have the right to know what they're buying before they buy it? For games and music it's often hard to know without pirating anything first. This is my excuse, lol. I know there's no law that says I have the right to try those things out first, but I think there should be. Else, I'd have to buy 10 products to get 1 that I really like. Advertisments and reviews are seldom enough for me. The law isn't God given and if I think there's something wrong with it, I'm not going to obey blindly, but only to avoid being punished. I'm listening to music that isn't advertised anywhere through the media. At some point I used the internet to illegally get it. I can't buy 1000 CDs to find out if I like them and had no other way to get a glimpse at them. Whereas with other artists, I get free samples on the radio because they were more lucky to get signed by more powerful companies (which in return very often have negative influences on artistic freedom). If downloading those mp3s was totally prohibited (in a way that you get instantly imprisoned if you did it), what would the result be? That the media has nearly total control over what products are being sold. I don't like that idea. I've given away "best of" compilations to friends. Why isn't this considered advertisment? Because the companies didn't agree on it? I don't think they should be able to decide on it because they aren't neutral parties in that case. In my country such a case would be taken to a court of lay assessors (Schöffengericht) "jury court" (Geschworenengericht). It means a number of randomly selected (more or less, there are restrictions) ordinary people would vote on if what I did was unjust. The judge has no vote, but has an influence on the height of the penalty. I like that idea much better. Edit: Also, I don't know what they're called, but there are some shops which let the consumers decide on the prices of the products they're buying there. And they almost always seem to do fine. So maybe you don't have to force people that hard to pay to make profit.

That's a perfect example of a straw man argument.
No it isn't, you simply interpreted as an argument. In fact I've never intended it to be one, it's only food for thought.
There's a big difference between two people listening to the same record and copying the record to other people. The latter is distribution, and it's a completely different thing.
Whether the difference is small or big is subjective. There is a difference. But if the idea is that people buy licenses to use the product (or listen to it) rather than the product itself, then it's a small crime to let your friends listen to it. Like it is a crime letting your friend use a program they haven't obtained the right to use.

"Would you please leave my room now? I want to listen to this CD I've bought, but you haven't bought the right to listen to it, so... Really sorry, but I don't want to get into trouble with the law!" And how the hell is multiplayer even legal? You buy only one copy of the game and suddenly the whole world could play it with you for free? Yeah, right. Now if that isn't ridiculous I don't know what is. I also think we should make this site a pay-site and send the money to those companies we're hurting with our movies. People can watch entire games being played through here for free without ever having owned copies of those respective games. That's obviously not legal either. We make members buy licenses to watch the movies and licenses to TAS games and thereby make this world a better place. :D

All runs with arbitrarily set goals to squeeze some more entertainment out of games (even if only for a limited audience) should be put into that section. But that opens a new issue and that's in which section "no major glitching" runs should be put in. I can see why Nach considers moving the low glitch any% to the concept demos section. At first I was against it, but it seems this is the only way to have clear cut rules on what to put into which section. "Low glitch" is somewhat arbitrarily set, excluding only specific glitches also is. I feel like it would be good to include a link on the submission pages of the heavy glitched runs to their low-glitch counter parts in the concept demo section then, especially on those with sram corruption. (as some people might not think of these as true/legit speedruns)

I think the point that this topic is trying to make (save-corruption may be not emulated correctly) is great. But the whole argument about recording resets doesn't equal to recording yourself playing the game is highly subjective. The reset button isn't on the controllers because the console needs only one in total. Pressing it does not equal to modifying the hardware or anything.

I don't think piracy is bad if people act somewhat reasonable. I wouldn't even have bought a quarter of the amount of games and CDs in the past years if I wouldn't have had the chance to try them (or similar games/CDs) for free. Why do I try them first? Because I don't want to waste money by buying a pig in a poke. And re-selling them would be too troublesome. Why do I buy them after trying? Because I can identify myself with them, and I want to have them in my room. So that people get to know me better just by looking around my room. And I don't want to have any garbage that I regret buying lying around. My point is that maybe piracy benefits the industry more than hurting it. It's just difficult to display the positive effect in numbers. But I know the PS1 outsold the N64 for reasons like that. Piracy is free advertisment. :p Shareware doesn't work as well because it never shows the whole picture.

That's why I put "I guess" into parenthesis. I wasn't sure if it's really possible. I see no problem with only the gmv in the zip-file and a 100% completion file somewhere in the submission text or elsewhere. Keep it like that until the gm2 format exists, then the submission could be updated. (repeats himself and leaves the thread)

It's possible to submit sram and movie file in the same zip (I guess). Or just the movie file alone, as a 100% completion file should be easy to obtain anyway. Then it could be updated to gm2 somewhen. But I get the point.

A Hyper Sonic run should start of SRAM and be called a new game+ run imo. The only reason we have this submission here and trouble with deciding if it should be published is because such a thing is frowned upon for some reason. I think the reason is that it's generally a bad idea to start of SRAM in games, so a rule was created to prohibit it. However, starting of SRAM makes perfect sense for this game as another category (100% complete files are identical and let you start as "a different character". It avoids repeating elements seen in other runs and adds new exclusive elements to its category). Sticking to rules where they are counter-productive shows poor consideration of the environments the rules are applied in. It's not wise decision-making. It's like saying you should never fire a gun at people. That's a good rule. But if there's a person running amok in front of you and killing many people, it is probably a wise decision to shoot anyway. Just an example of how the environment should be taken into consideration when applying rules. Well, now it's too late and all of this has led to a Hyper Sonic run with boring elements in it that the audience now wants to have cut out of the movie. Those elements wouldn't have been in the run in the first place, if that rule wasn't applied to that run category of the game. Now, this doesn't provide a solution to the question if this should be published or not. But I guess it addresses the source of the problem.

It has to have a very steep learning curve where it's almost impossible for new players to catch up. Hard to perform techniques for extra points or other advantages are also cool. In short it should promote elitism. I've found that those games are the ones with the highest long-time replay value. Multi-player isn't a must. Prize and graphics aren't relevant except if it's a very bad case. Oh, and it should be fun. :p

Few people know the different between bits and bytes. Higher numbers are better. Even if all companies displayed it in bytes, some company would eventually start displaying it in bits (again). More people would buy their product. They'd think they bought a superior product for a cheaper price. So other companies would have to display it in that awkward way too. And that's exactly what they do.

For those of you who want to see proof that there is a tradition of metal acts with a comical element in Japan (I know there are only very few of you), here is a link to a 10 year old video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0gZEn3sUng The song even features one or more video game tamed puns! (lyrics/translation) For some reason the quality seems to be higher in the lq version (or maybe it's just louder). I promise I'm going to be quiet about stuff like that (for some time) from now on! XD

Nach, can you prove that your cap is actually from a game/movie and that it was not drawn in paint or anything? It looks a bit suspicious..
