The only one I can think of is Scyther. Does someone on the S.S. Anne have one? My memory is fuzzy.

You mentioned python! Hooray! I can personally guarantee that python is a suitable language for games programming (unless you want heavy 3d stuff). In conjunction with SDL (check out pygame.org), it is possible to rapidly program games by checking feedback straight away in the interpreter. I translated a C++ raycaster into Python yesterday, and it runs at a paltry 12-50fps inside a 100x100 window. I haven't tried compiling it, but that usually makes it run a bit faster. First, you really need to pick what sort of game you want to create. Bad ideas for a first time programmer: FPS, RTS. Your first game will probably be some kind of Puzzle game. Clone something else (like Tetris, as Bisqwit suggested), or make up something you haven't seen before, but keep it simple. Once the simple bit is done, you can keep adding bits to the game until it isn't so simple anymore, and you have gained valuable experience for tackling bigger projects. You'll encounter bits that will be difficult to modify from your original program, and that will tell you what to look out for in the future. Feel free to badger (PM) me for more specifics. The world needs more competent programmers, instead of goddamn companies full of content designers for Source.

I'm afraid I only have Nesmock v1.4.0 which came with FCEU 0.98.15 (though when writing movies it claims to be .13, heh). Good job with this, though. I was thinking of doing it myself. I will do if JXQ doesn't want to at some point.

I used to play the Trumpet and Tenor Horn, but I haven't done any of that for years. I'm barely competent on a keyboard. I much prefer listening to and composing music rather than playing it. I have a couple of pages on my website for releases: original stuff and remixes. Notice that hardly any of it is finished. I'm like that. :)

I did a LOT of testing on how the ending works. I am fairly sure I managed to get the Queen to appear when bypassing the +8 trigger, but I am uncertain if the 'correct' ship was there at the end. Still, secret worlding through the game and killing metroids embedded in walls will make an entertaining demo as it is.

Yeah, in IPA, myrrh is /mɜː/. I prefer to pronounce it with a fair amount of rhoticization, though. Rhythm is an interesting one, though obviously the y is a semivowel. It's definitely two syllables, /ɹɪ'ðm̩/ by my guess. Though you probably knew, 'data' is pronounced 'day-ta' in English (along with its singular word, datum.) :)

No, you're heading down the right track. 'The Government' has learnt that projects with non-material goals have often turned up useful results. Now I guess they're willing to shell out a certain amount for a project like that. The general pure maths topics - prime numbers, factorisation etc. - are often of use in de/encryption. Presumably a large-scale project about primes would turn up something of great importance, like RSA.

However, if you do not use v20, you may encounter glitches that affect the game adversely, like with that Wario one.

For your information, it is also widely considered the worst game of all time. Well... let's see. TASing (and speedrunning in general) actually extends the lifetime of games, by giving the player something to do after they have already beaten it, etc. So, uh, yeah. Guess we won't be seeing much of you anymore.

That's definitely true. Blinx has quite average music, but in combination with the sheer difficulty and frustration of the game, it has been assigned (in my head) a kind of 'triumphant' feel. Especially the end-level music, haha. I would say the same for most of the music on Sonic 1, because it's almost all lame pop songs. I still enjoy it though (I was a Mega Drive kid).

I just downloaded and listened to it. It's just so... obvious. The rhythm, the instrumentation, the tune - it's like music by numbers. Also, the SNES poor string sounds hurt it a fair bit. It's okay, but it's just too simple to be anything special.

Never understood Elly's fascination with the Lufia 2 soundtrack (though it may be a carry-over from her love of the series). It seems very bland to me. The battle themes are particularly 'motorbike music', even moreso than Final Fantasy Mystic Quest's. Ugh! Not a big fan of the 'SNES sound' in general, though I agree, Super Metroid has an excellent soundtrack (it doesn't try to use strings like most RPGs on it, hah)

re: Bisqwit Yeah, that's exactly why we need relativity so much, absolute position/velocity etc. is too hard (at least, for us) to pin down. Also, relative measurements are often useful enough to do calculations and such on. I don't believe in ether. It's good for restoring MP, though.

Yeah, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon immediately struck me as a modern-day Rogue clone when it came out. And it got a bit of discussion on the forums here, but not that much. AFAIR the luck manipulation was more irritating than in older games (a common trend).

Wow, nfq, that was some pretty illogical ranting. The problem might be the terminology you're using, though. In most everyday usage, "X moves away from Y" is usually the same thing as "X becomes further away from Y", but it is not necessarily the same. Also, the universe might not actually be 'infinite' as you expect. I seem to remember learning some stuff about closed loops or 'infinite with a boundary', as odd as that sounds, at college. To go back to the balloon metaphor for a moment, let's say that instead of there being drawn dots on the balloon, instead there is a single molecule of ink attached to a single molecule of balloon-rubber. That ink is not moving relative to the rubber it's on, but it is moving relative to the other side of the balloon. Again, important distinction but a subtle one.

I really hate most of the stuff on there. The ones which work best are the quiet ones that try not to be cool or hip etc. The Cid one is hilarious, but not good.

Absolutely! I love the music on that, it's just so perfect for the game. I forget my choices last time, so...: Klonoa 2 (huge crazy orchestral and electronic arrangements), Blinx the Timesweeper (somewhat trance-y and bland, but works well), Red Alert 2 (no-holds barred techno awesomeness) and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (incredibly relaxing, folkish harmony).

I'm sure a lot of you know England lost to Croatia yesterday night, thus denying them a place in Euro 2008. In the buildup before the game, one 'expert' on a program remarked that if England were to lose, the "entire british economy would fail". Make of that what you will.

There's nothing anti-english/uk about that. It's anti-"the idiots who lost it", which could be any random post employee. Quote from local news story this evening: "Here in Germany, many shops use biometric technology to identify the buyer instead of cash, credit cards and so on. I'll show you how it works... here's a bag of sausages; this is Germany." argh

Yep, just about all of those specs you'll see were either released by the companies back when they had balls, or have been reverse-engineered. I'd assume companies now would offer (incomplete) specs as part of their 'design toolkits'... or maybe not. Those SDKs tend to be rather expensive, though. That's why the XBDN or whatever it's called seems a really good initiative.

It's very cool. If I had a (working) machine right now, I'd try it out. It can be VERY VERY fast with some clever use of L/R and using Aang's dash.

If you don't mind, Saturn, could you possibly stop trying to persuade other people to stop sharing their tricks in a useful and community-centred fashion? Thankyou.

Ok, what the hell? This thread is about voting for the TAS, not about the voting system. By all means, explain your votes, but arguing with other people's votes isn't really going to get you very far. Surely this should be split?
