Yeah, that's registry. Nothing much you can do about that really unless you recompile the plugin. Or just use a slightly different one, jeez!

Oh, of course it isn't failproof. What is? However, it's close enough, and considering what a niche activity speedrunning is anyway, it's good enough.

v20 is recommended for GB games because it actually emulates them properly (probably).

There's a bunch of ways (and people have been caught before). I'm not going to list them because security through obscurity might not be airtight, but it sure is useful.

Yeah, there's lots of effects in the game that are subtly screwed up by the video plugin TASers have to use. Not to mention the freaking music. :)

As previously mentioned, most FMVs are not entertaining. In fact, as a fairly avid Suikoden II played I can say the FMVs are completely optional for watching even if you haven't seen them before, they're so throwaway. Concentrate on grazing those corners :p

Kahn has one. I don't think you can take it off his equipment though.

There's nothing arbitrary about 'no calculators'... it's more entertaining, which is the point of TASes.

Well, I was thinking of trying to persuade someone to coop with me and record a (single-segment?) Diablo 2-player run on the PSX port. That would have very little cheating and tricks in it. :p

I like it! My username is predictable. I got an SS rank on FF9 battle. :D Most of the 'hard' versions of songs are way too picky for me.

You can also use other cars to move faster, for example ramming them off the road by richocheting when it's a hard corner. Of course, stuff like that glitch might somewhat reduce the need for driving prowess. :)

This would be one of those movies that would gain a lot from commentary/captions in the AVI. I suggest this.

Says Swordless 'Link'. Maybe one should step back a little and stop nominating whatever game you're currently trying? They can't all be the hardest. The TASes I'm 'working' on are actually quite easy. Ha! Buck the trend!!!1

But most FMVs are boring. And poorly scripted. Because video game directors are not (good) film directors.

I know 6 and have identified 3. Still yeah this is horrible, it's like a music quiz except afterwards I want to strangle things.

R-Type Final does not-very-much to you if you die, which I appreciate, because I die a lot. Thunderforce III (a shmup I have actually beaten) is rock-hard, and it's not bullet hell. It's only memorization if you make it. I prefer to react to things and play it differently every time.

Yeah, that's just something you'll have to deal with. :) Does entering a location without encounters (if such exist) reset the counter, or does it freeze it ready to count down again once you leave? That could be your key right there. For example, on some games the step counter still lowers when you're in towns, but once it reaches 0 it generates a new N to count down from; this means you can walk into a town for a couple of steps then walk out again and finish your main map journey with no encounters. Just a thought.

Usually it can be manipulated, yes. If there are any random events in the battle (very likely unless the game is Armed Dragon Fantasy Villgust) it will jog the random seed to another value. Ending the battle on different frames tends to give different 'N steps' left before the next battle occurs. Final Fantasy VI works like this I think (it also has a complex thing where different tiles subtract different amounts from the remaining step counter, though)

Yes yes yes. 2-player perfect (or horribly flawed) fighting is incredibly entertaining. Please do at least one round of this, preferably more.

Well, from experience Pokemon (I know that isn't pure classic RPG), the Suikoden series, the Megaman Battle Network series. There are plenty of others, but there are probably an equal amount of 'get battles every N steps' games too.

If you're not comfortable with hex-editing directly, try using TAS Movie Editor or whatever it's called. Find it on this forum or links in the FAQ pages.

I've got Blaze & Blade (JE only) which was quite hard to actually find an ISO for a few years ago. That's about it really, most (r|R)are games suck!

I think you have to unlock some kind of mode in Options in order to fight Akuma EX in Arcade play. I may be mistaken. Still, this is one of the PSX games I own and I love it to bits even with all its flaws. I'm not sure it will make a good run though. I'd much rather see slightly broken (+ large hit count) combos but I'm not sure if there are really any available. I know Kairi and Garuda can get very large hit counts but I'd much rather see odd stuff with say, Allen and Hokuto showcased.

As for the 'sound continues when you exit PCSX' thing, you can stop that by hitting Escape while playing then clicking the X, rather than just clicking the X on the game window. That same problem annoyed me a lot before I starting doing this. :p
