1. Yes. Buuuuuuuuuuut... 2. I feel that the safest approach is to expand gradually. We don't want to overwhelm ourselves. So "safe" things to accept to standard earlier include unlockable modes, difficulties, and characters. Convenience things (cutscene skips etc) I could see accepting at some point to standard but maybe not right away. Any sort of glitched goals that involve sram need to be explained thoroughly for all classes. 3. So there's two different goals in play. SRAM verification movies can be annoying but absolutely provide legitimacy. Some sort of hacked save is more convenient, but lacks the potential legitimacy. IMO, a SRAM verification movie should be provided if it is convenient enough to do so. If there is a good reason for not providing an sram verification file, we can accept it on a case by case basis.

So I didn't really take part in any of this discussion when I really should have but I guess it's better late than never since implementation has stalled. I don't think having playground as a submission status can produce the desired actual listing of playground movies. There's no way for the site to know for example if two submissions share the same branch, short of say a branch label string comparison but that's not good coding and branch labels are easily changed. If all that was desired was for one playground run of each branch be displayed at all and given the playground submission status, this would be enough. However, for a leaderboard style implementation, it is not enough. A process similar to, but much simpler than publication is required. "Add Playground listing" should be somewhere as a page that people with the proper permissions can go to. The page should be a form with
  • Submission
  • Branch label
  • Any existing encodes (in case they are not in the submission text)
  • Any existing previous fastest playground listing that is beaten. I know people would like it handled automatically but this fails to take into account emulator differences, which is a common occurrence in TASing.
Anything I am missing?

Found multiple improvements throughout the first few stages and I expect this trend to continue. Part of the issue I am seeing is that you appear to be optimizing for the y-axis at times where the x-axis is actually more important. Delaying jumps can allow you to switch your x-momentum faster to the opposite direction in cases where you need to do a sort of u-turn.

This thread is not for requests for people to tas things. This thread is for questions regarding movie rules etc.

Nice work attempting something a bit more complicated than your previous projects. Pinball is rather difficult to do well. I think there's still a good amount of room for improvement on this one, I found a 162 frame improvement so far on stage 1, this was just what a couple hours without any looking up RAM gave me. Encode of said improvement: Link to video

I feel breaking a hack is bad when none of the hack is on display. If one immediately ACE'd to the finish, yeah that'd be really boring. But I feel enough of the hack was on display here to make for a unique run.

I didn't feel this TAS was broken by the glitches on display in a way that felt identical to a base game run. The only exception was the stun glitch maybe but even that wasn't that bad.

As somebody who doesn't really know this game, was the NOVICE mode used or not? Kinda hard to tell from reading the text.

imo, allow max score universally, and allow for max display score. If it tracks more internally, that could supersede max display score but should not be required.

It appears this TAS uses a bad dump. It doesn't sync on a good one either. Any plans on redoing?

Is Wille Coyote's position universally tracked throughout the level or can one despawn him by having him go off screen? If the latter, could you intentionally despawn him (by stopping or otherwise) to reduce end of level delays by having him spawn sooner after you reach the exit?

Really nice TAS, Klonoa games appear to have fun and interesting mechanics when in a TAS setting.

I pretty much agree with what was suggested in the opener. I'd be ok with some additional external cheats but it'd definitely have to either be moons or playground.

Is anyone planning to either complete ezgames69's wip or look into the trick that I discovered?

Was ingame time the focus here? Shortest gameplay? Or shortest input?

Found new damage boost technique where if you jump and take damage in just the right way you get a ton of height. Shown off in this userfile at around frame 3500.

Hack seems ok enough, but some of the movement seemed questionable to me. I've found 24 frames worth of improvement so far. Haven't synced to the end yet but I have no doubt that most if not all of this can be carried.
