There is certain methods you can use to cut down on the amount of rerecords you need to use, and I'm proficient at TASing 2p games as a result of experience gained from doing it over the years. The programming errors were subtle. One being on the Behemoth fight; the other being on the crystal pillars in the diamond palace level. The luck manipulation is in the volcano level in relation to the falling rocks; the bird boss fight; Geist and the final boss. The game is mostly hold right for the win as a result of the bird being able to clear the path of enemies for you. It's also easy to find the first frame of opportunity to land hits on the bosses. Not to mention the game has various amounts of idle time. Which makes the rerecord count make perfect sense for such a game.

They are certain periods of history I know a lot about. The problem is aspects of it are hard to discuss when you're dealing with people who have significant shortcomings in knowledge, or worse people who're blinded by their own political or ideological beliefs. The main thing I've learned from it is how cyclical it is. There is nothing happening now that hasn't happened in the past; only technology and scientific advancement is linear. For example what's going in Europe now is very similar to what happened during the final days of Rome.

I've noticed there is no tutorial for multiplayer. Is anyone considering doing one? I've given consideration to it, but I'm unsure of what capture software to use.

Urgh! When will people learn to record footage from their phone in landscape. Anyway, it's great that someone finally pulled it off on console.

Could someone please update this page so improvements between each movie is properly documented. http://tasvideos.org/SM64TASHistory.html

I haven't got my choice set in stone, but I was looking into Elevator Action Returns, but first I'll need to get my Saturn USB controller, as it will make it easier to control two players.

Clockwork Knight 2 is a bit more complex, and would require research in terms of strategies and route planning. However, there's other game I'd rather do than this games sequel.

I tried it with Burning Rangers; Nights is also a good game to test it with.

I've just tried using the virtual pad to replicate analogue movements on the Saturn, and can't register movements which fall between 340-20 degrees and 160-200 degrees.

Originally I thought I was using the American one because I had "Sega Saturn BIOS v1.00 (US)" in my firmware folder. However, Bizhawk interpreted it as the Japanese one. I didn't think it was a big deal so I just continued TASing the game, but I'll take note of that in future.

Can I request to one of the admins to provide an option which allows the submitter to state what system bios is being used.

I wanted to see if I could play this back on emu and it worked. Admittedly, I had to mute the sound, because Saturn games don't run well on my 2010 laptop. However, I did enjoy the run and there was some really nice touches. BTW I did try TASing the first level of Clockwork Knight and there wasn't the glitched out scores at the end of the level. So I'd assume on that basis the game isn't going to crash after the first boss. Link to video

I'm surprised you managed to TAS a Saturn game. Every one I've tried repeatedly desyncs. I tried TASing Clockwork Knight a few months back and it desynced seven times before gameplay proper started. Edit: I wasn't aware there was a recently updated version of Bizhawk. I'll have to watch this movie back on emu and then see if I have any luck TASing other games.

It's fair to say that WIP was dedicated to the memory of Michael Jackson :-D

It depends on how the checksum is generated. For a very basic test, try increasing one byte by one, then go 4 bytes ahead in the file and reduce that value by one. If it doesn't work, restore the +4 byte value to its original value, then try reducing the +8 byte by 1. I can dig up the code I used to generate a valid checksum for God of War's saves if you think it would help.
I tried altering one of the stats by one, then decreasing the next by one, and it corrupted. So there might be more to it than I thought there was. I did find this guide on GameFaqs https://www.gamefaqs.com/saturn/578114-shining-force-iii-premium-disc/faqs/24967 However, since it was written published in 2003. I can't imagine the guy being around anymore.

I figured I might as well take a punt on this forum, because it's hard to find an answer to this fairly technical question. I've been playing playing Shining Force 3 on the Sega Saturn and have been trying to alter ingame stats using a hex editor and then transferring the modified file back to my Saturn. It can also be done with emulators as well. However, even the slightest alteration will cause the file to corrupt because it doesn't match up with the checksum. I believe I found the checksum after an hour or so of looking, but have no idea how to calculate a new one. Just wondering how I would go about doing this? There is a save file editor, which calculates it for you. However, it's buggy and incomplete, and has been abandoned years ago. I've tried contacting the original author to ask for help, but there has been no reply. Before anyone asks here's my unmodified .dat file I extracted from my Saturn and here's the save file editor for Shining Force 3 if you wish to see it. I believe it's possible to use .dat file on SSF if you rename it to "InternalBackupRAM.bin"

Why is final boss skip glitch one of the labels on the publication? It's not even necessary to fight the final boss during a regular play through.

I remember doing the twisted bombchu trick by accident many years ago at the start of Dondongo's Cavern, but was never able to replicate it. I did enjoy the run, but I didn't like the use of the wrong warp to Ganon's Castle and the Temple of Time skip. As it would imply to an uniformed viewer. That you don't need to collect the stones or medallions in order to complete the game.

Donkey Kong Country is probably the earliest example of Arbitrary Code Execution. In terms of wrong warping between levels 1 and 2. A of people including me accidentally stumbled across it back then.

I knew the solution was likely to be something similar to Bobo's. My method was largely based on guesswork and logical deduction. For a start I knew the values were going to be in some form of linear progression. After all, how are you supposed to make the equation balance out when you don't actually know any of the values? I knew A had to be the lightest so I assigned a value of 1 to it. That meant B had to be 2 and C had to be 4. Then I knew D had to be the heaviest so I assigned a value of 7 to it, which meant Z would have to be 6. Using that I could figure out X was 3, Y was 5. Meaning that A+B+C+D = X+Y+Z Not a particularly scientific method, as it was largely based on bold assumptions. I don't think it would have worked too well on a more complex example.

Have a fun puzzle for you people to try. I'm not too interested if you get the right answer, but more how you arrived at it. Personally, I think I lucked into the right answer when I did it earlier but here goes. There is seven items, each with a fictional value attached to it. You must determine the weights; put them all on a scale and get them to balance. You don't know the weights of any item are but you know that... B is twice as heavy as A C is twice as heavy as B Y is as heavy as B + X Z is as heavy as A + B + X X + Y is as heavy as B + Z D is as heavy as A + Z

I've tried TASing Saturn games on Bizhawk, and it's not practical due to the amount of desyncs. Not to mention having clear emulation errors across most games. This is as a result of still using Yabause as it's main core. However, SSF emulator has come on leaps and bounds in recent times. So I was wondering if there was a possibility of switching to that emulator in the future?

I did this game using one life! And I took less than an hour! As for TASing in general, I don't know what's worse TASing something off screen, or AI/RNG manipulation. Congrats on getting the run finished. I didn't think I'd ever see it get done. This gives me hope of one day seeing 100% Majora's Mask, DK64 and all tracks TAS for F-Zero.

I've been following this from the beginning. So I'd already seen it before it was submitted. The only trick I wasn't aware of was the warping trick into the pool in level 2. Was that done by sidestepping after pulling the lever? I must admit it was amusing to see high risk/suicidal tricks which save minimal amounts of time.
