In the case of the SMB low score run, it isn't criticized due to its category, but rather because said category stretches out the game length considerably, turning it mostly into a long playaround. Sure, it would take skill to do all that and get to the flagpole at exactly the right time, but watching heaps of wall kicking for over 10 minutes really puts off a lot of users.
People don't have a problem with categories that take a much longer time to complete than the maximum (many people will find the Super Metroid 100% run more entertaining than the glitched any% run, for example), but in some cases the goal can take away much of the entertainment.

Hitting his weak spot is not benefitable in a noticable way. It only allows 1 extra point of damage for an entire combo. And I'm pretty sure that not getting hit is faster, as it'd probably take too long to get behind him due to the water and ice.

The floor is ice, and due to the water it's not possible to go fast enough to get dash jump speed. Therefore, dashing over the ice in the water is faster than jumping over the water. (Notice how Ashe only gets normal jump horizontal speed when jumping to the door).
EDIT:Oh, and I also tested Megamerging into Model L (which negates both water and ice effects) and it turned out to be slower.

As far as the game goes, I just need to do the final two stages - Underground Volcano I don't see myself have much problem at, and Ouroboros is mainly going to be long due to the boss rush, but half of the bosses will probably beaten with the same tactics as they were done before anyway. Then the final boss's second phase will require some thinking for an optimized way to beat him.

Yes, it is. It's not possible to go to the Doppler stages just like that (I tried every input combination there, it does not work). Also, if it weren't a level select code it'd be more well known, instead of the other way around.
It's also even totally different from what you described earlier, so how can you be so sure to say it isn't a level select code?

Actually, I don't really think so now that my route is better than gstick's. I didn't expect Phazon Multiball to be able to be selected so quickly in Pirate Frigate (probably faster than using it in Tallon Overworld), and I guess using power bombs on bosses is faster than using them on missions anyway.
Also, could gstick be contacted to submit his TAS here? It's very probably worthy of publication here.

He ended the fight with a jump kick into the star; we did a jump dive. Ours takes 1 frame longer, but it doesn't look as cool imo. It's an easy fix of just activating the text closer to the star.
I'm afraid I have to disagree. You shouldn't submit a purposely suboptimal run. Or the publisher should flag it as "contains speed/entertainment tradeoffs" which would be ridiculous. Hex in that other frame, please.
I agree. This is one of the, if not the most frame-whored game in TAS existence, so there really shouldn't be any speed/entertainment tradeoffs in the TAS.

It's a nice run, athough there's a few sloppiness points and optimizations that I think could be done better.
For instance, it should be possible to get into the target of Artifact Temple right at the start. I've done that several times in realtime.

When I made my ancient WIP (not posting that here) of this game, I thought that it'd be faster to do Tallon Overworld first, use Phazon Multiball to do all missions and then do the bosses so you have Power Bomb on the Frigate. You'll need to suicide one of the Phazon balls along the way, though, because you can't exit the level while having both of them.
Some missions can be instantly cleared with a Power Bomb as soon as they start and you'll instantly start a new mission. I think it's better to have Power Bomb on Frigate, because you can't use Power Bombs during Phazon Multiball.

Also, this run doesn't seem to be optimal. This TAS by Lord Tom seems to be faster, and at MrFixitOnline the world record for Mute City 1 seems to be 1'06"006, significantly faster than your times.

First track only TASes are ancient and not preferred nowadays. The F-Zero (SNES) TAS you mentioned is from 2004.

It's only faster if it's rolling down a slope, although it wouldn't be worth it to Megamerge into it just for that.
