I'm wondering about this myself too. Why is the current any% slower than this movie?
The SNES any% run is on a different version, on a different system, without the specific major tricks of the PSX version (like Doppler skip). Besides, this run is itself certainly not any%, so it makes no sense to consider it for obsoleting an any% run.

I talked with Masterjun about this one before he made the decision. The main argument was that when a movie improves upon a previous movie, it generally would stay within the same tier, unless there is a visible difference in entertainment value between this one and the previous. I haven't watched both runs to compare, but evidently according to Masterjun, there wasn't. And yes, movies that are improvements do often get a disproportionately high amount of yes votes. People tend to lean towards judging only the improvement rather than the entertainment value of the whole run, and the improvement itself is almost always favorable.

BizHawk 1.11.9 has been released! The new release features some nice additions to NESHawk, including VS support, fixes to mGBA memory domain reading, and several improvements to TAStudio. See the full release notes here: http://tasvideos.org/BizHawk/ReleaseHistory.html

Starting on January 1st, 2017, 00:00 UTC, TASVideos will drop support for submitting movies from certain emulators. The list of emulators that will be dropped is: Mupen64-rr, PCSX-rr, PSXjin, Dega and FCEU. These emulators will be dropped for various reasons, depending on each emulator. Largely, they suffer from emulation accuracy issues, have poor game support, have poor sync stability that make the jobs of judging or publishing runs on them more difficult than needed, are hard to encode for, or have already largely fallen out of use. For more details about each specific emulator, see the links to the respective forum topics below. For each of these emulators, a better alternative exists that does not suffer from all of these issues. For those working on a TAS project on one of these emulators that may not meet this deadline, a continuance may be requested. To do so, post in the appropriate forum topic for: Mupen64-rr movies, PCSX-rr or PSXjin movies, Dega movies, or FCEU movies. Continuance requests are accepted until December 15th 2016, 23:59 UTC.

Starting January 1st 2017, 00:00 UTC, movies submitted with Dega will no longer be accepted. Dega is notorious for being a poor emulator with many issues in things such as accuracy, playback and AVI capturing. It is vastly improved on these aspects by BizHawk and has been for years. It also has been dead as a submittable platform for years, as the last submission made with it dates back to 2011. Just in case anyone still somehow has a Dega run in progress that they may not finish before the given deadline, you can post in this thread to request a continuance. Continuances will be accepted until December 15th 2016, 23:59 UTC. EDIT: Continuances are closed now.

Starting January 1st 2017, 00:00 UTC, movies submitted with FCEU will no longer be accepted. FCEU is not necessarily a horrible emulator, but it is simply out of date, with more modern emulators such as FCEUX, NESHawk and QuickNES all surpassing it in emulation accuracy and TAS tools. Practically everyone already has moved on, of course (only three .fcm movies have been published in the past three years, one of which was an unrejection and another was originally created in 2008), which makes it safe to say that it is not popular as a TAS platform anymore and could be dropped more or less safely. Note that FCEUX also supports importing .fcm files with a good rate of compatibility, so those that still use FCEU may also consider converting their movie over to FCEUX and submitting their movie as a .fm2 instead. In case anyone has a run in progress and still wants to submit a .fcm movie after the date, you can post in this thread to request a continuance. Continuances will be accepted until December 15th 2016, 23:59 UTC. EDIT: Continuances are closed now.

Absurd hypotheticals get an argument nowhere. The author's encode conforms to publication standards, therefore we allow linking to it. It is as simple as that.

Why? I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but that filter is just plain ugly beyond reason. It distracts from enjoying the TAS. Why that one has to be the official encode shown along the publication, rather than the better one, is beyond my comprehension. I know it doesn't have much weight, but please take my protest as noted.
sonicpacker wants the YouTube link to his own encode for the publication link and that's that. Even if you don't like the filter, we still consider it acceptable enough to link as an official YouTube encode, so we will use it.

Because VBA is not a console-accurate emulator, and does not run at a console-accurate timing.

It is probably possible to TAS the PSX version. Windows is much more unlikely, especially if it requires the mouse.

It was sort of neat for one or two phases, but after that it just left me wondering whether it is really worthwhile to publish alongside the 2p run. I personally don't think this run has enough in it to publish it as a separate, slower category.

I agree with True on this one. This basically entails running arbitrary code as a part of the movie, which would count in practice as an external modification, which we do not accept.

Also, what RAM state should I use to submit a run of this game? Are we just sticking with the default FCEUX state? Should I use all zeroes? There still has to be something in RAM at startup.
We can accept either the default starting state of the emulator (hard to stop accepting these after 10+ years, and we at least know it to be a standardized and unbiased state; future versions of FCEUX/BizHawk should standardize to a known valid state), or an arbitrary known valid state (which are yet to be researched/figured out).

I'm still disappointed that you decided to do an X-only route that isn't going for the bad ending (where you do not unlock Zero). I think having to avoid defeating Nightmare Zero while still getting items to pass Gate 1 would have made for some interesting routing options. Still expecting the TAS to be plenty of fun to watch though :)

I think it's time to look for an expansion of our current judging staff. The queue is filling up and some of our judging staff is busy this time of the year with personal commitments, so now is a good time to hopefully bring in some new judges! So, I'm opening up a thread for judge applications again. The requirements for becoming a judge are not entirely strict, but I will require applicants to follow at least a good amount of these qualifications:
  1. You have at least some published movies on the site. Having more player points or active player points is a bonus.
  2. You have shown some variety in TASing different systems, genres or games. Being restricted to single series or single games is a negative point.
  3. Generally, you have some evidence of being an accomplished TASer who knows how to make an optimized movie and can recognize signs of suboptimality in a movie.
  4. You are able to playback movies on common emulators, i.e. BizHawk. You also have experience, or are willing to figure out playing back movies on more exotic emulators. Must be able or willing to playback movies on at least one of the likes of Dolphin, JPC-RR or Hourglass.
  5. You have at least some history of productive feedback on workbench submissions or WIPs.
  6. You are reasonably active on the forums/IRC and in decent or good standing with the community at large.
  7. You are able to communicate clear enough in English.
  8. You are trustworthy and able to act and judge submissions in accordance to the movie rules, tier-specific rules, and the judge guidelines.
If you think that you fulfill these qualifications well enough, then send a PM to me and tell me why you think you'll make a capable judge!
