It's only a tradeoff if doing something entertaining costs time. If it doesn't matter timewise, it's not a tradeoff.

The problem with Swellow is that it would have to get statused every fight in order for Guts+Facade to kick in and do the big damage. It's probably possible, but it would require some stupid manipulation for every regular Frontier match, and wouldn't work for some of the Frontier Brains. Latios could be caught pretty quickly after the Elite Four with some luck manipulation, and is probably worth more than Hariyama. Hariyama would practically require a Quick Claw to do anything useful, and I don't think he has good moves either. Latios has a better movepool and better stats. Base 110 speed would probably outspeed most other things. EDIT: I guess you could do something completely stupid with Hariyama with Belly Drum, Guts and Quick Claw and proceed to OHKO basically everything, but that still takes a turn of setup and wastes time every round. Besides that, Medicham is probably an overall better choice, who can also be caught in Victory Road.

Having seen the run now, I really don't like the way the run ends. There's no visual indication of any sort that you completed the game, and the way you die after 'finishing' the final boss just makes it look like the opposite. I don't think it's possible to make a speedrun of the game in this state. There just isn't a clearly definable win condition, as far as I can see. Even now it's not even obvious (outside of watching RAM values) that you are actually progressing 'as far as you can go' in the bossfight/game. So yeah. I vote against publication.

Could you elaborate about this? I couldn't find any reference to trading off speed for entertainment anywhere else in the run comments.

I will never understand the logic behind "coarse language" being ranked significantly worse up the age-scale than "bloody violence". Apparently, a 13 year old is considered old enough for graphical pixelly depictions of bloody violence, but still considered way too young to watch a video in which the word "sucks" is said. How exactly does that follow?

You make it sound as if it is something completely trivial to do. Also, some more words from IRC to answer this: [16:17:51] <adelikat> the fact is that bizhawk fell behind retroarch in core integration because we lost our dedication core importer guy (natt) to RL [16:17:57] <adelikat> we need someone to step up [16:18:03] <adelikat> that and we have a LOT more requirements for putting a core in [16:18:54] <adelikat> it must be up to a TASing standard, has way more hooks (like reading/writing core memory, lua, etc), and we are a pro-user UI so we have demands of more tools and pro-user features [16:19:20] <adelikat> and in many cases (like bsnes) it takes a lot of time to work it to be deterministic since that isn't usually a concern of cores, nor a concern of libretro [16:20:17] <adelikat> many cores in libretro are probably done substandard for our needs but just fine for a casual gamer To put it simply, the reason BizHawk supports less cores is because it has higher requirements for cores (like core determinacy, memory reading/writing, etc.). RetroArch is aimed at a more casual gamer crowd, which doesn't care about such things. To put the same tools in RetroArch, some of the cores probably have to be adapted for these requirements (and the tools themselves from BizHawk have to be reprogrammed in another emulator, which is also a significant work investment) - and in that case, why bother using RetroArch in the first place? It'd make more sense to make the cores rr-compatible and then put them in BizHawk, instead of building on RetroArch. (Though we do need somebody to actually do that work).

Next WIP, with Ice Man and Fire Man's stages done: Link to video User movie #10304706261130180 Comparison:
  • 10 frames saved in Ice Man's stage (10 in stage, 0 in boss)
  • 28 frames saved in Fire Man's stage (21 in stage, 7 in boss)
  • 16 frames lost by longer menu loading times
In addition, before the start of the first Wily Fortress stage, I saved 193 frames by skipping through the Wily Fortress cutscene faster. (Yes, it's possible to do that by pressing A or B at certain frames. It's subtle, but makes a difference of multiple seconds.) The total amount of frames saved is now 88 frames at the end of Fire Man's stage, and 271 frames by the start of the first fortress stage.

Yes. (I know for sure at least in X5 jumping advances the RNG (because of the random jump sounds X and Zero make). The same principle probably applies in X4 as well.)

This is sometimes necessary to get the luck manipulation in Heat Man's battle working. You can see the published MM2 run also fire a few missed or blocked shots. That said, the manipulation itself could be much better though. :/

8+ year bump! :D I've been working on an improvement on BoMF's published run. Not that the run itself didn't look very optimized - I'm just making it even more optimized. So far, every improvement consists of minute single-digit frame improvements in rooms, using slightly different tactics, lag optimization and heavy subpixel optimization. (The majority of improvements come from the subpixel optimization.) Here's a WIP of the first two stages (Cut Man and Elec Man): Link to video User movie #10078756355232612 This run improves Cut Man's stage by 23 frames (22 frames in the stage, 1 frame in the bossfight) and Elec Man's stage by 51 frames (44 frames in the stage, 7 in the bossfight). However, due to using a different emulator, it also loses 18 frames by longer loading times in the menus. (The game also lags slightly more overall.) So far, the net gain is 56 frames. (Note that the frame counts are compared by AVI frames, because VBA's frames are inaccurate).

Personally, I didn't care much about the DDR display. I think the real charm of the menu playaround is the music beats produced by the inputs, instead of the external display. I don't know what the other voters may think, though. I guess/predict that the movie ratings will hold up well enough to retain a Moon. Can't yet tell for sure, though.

(Bump.) I found out Frieza can do the same thing as Goku with his punch+kick (anti-projectile) attack, in some matchups even faster than Goku. Compared to Goku, Frieza has advantages and disadvantages. Frieza's move is slightly faster, and he has a better fireball finisher, but his move causes more hit pushback (causing the move to be slower outside the corner) and his spin kick is worse than Goku's for when the opponent is stunned. I don't know yet which of the two would be faster overall in a full run. This clip of Frieza vs. Cell defeats Cell 00:00.50 faster than the Goku run. Link to video

I didn't get around to read the kickstarter page until this morning. As soon as I scrolled down to the mockup design screenshots, I immediately decided I absolutely must get it. And pledge money to it - gotta have that retro game manual and game box.

Admittedly I was a bit on the fence about this one. However, the approval going by votes is only around 70%, which is good but not that great. Most videos with about that rating go to the Vault. (Some examples: this, this, this and this) Moreover, having looked at the movie, I just didn't see enough in the movie to warrant a Moon. The movement is not exactly speedy, and to me, the walking right and jump-kicking mooks for justice was funny, but got repetitive after roughly a minute. The boss battles and autoscroller didn't do a whole lot convince me either. That's why I didn't think this run deserves a Moon. Of course, if enough people disagree, it can always be changed.

Quite simply: don't troll. I understand you may find it fun and all, but when your trolling becomes obnoxious to other people, their community is not going to like you, and you are going to notice the consequences of your trolling. So just don't do it. Certainly you can think of some other way to have fun, that doesn't involve annoying other people and alienating yourself from every community you come across.

I didn't vote no because the game was a port. I voted no because I wasn't entertained while watching the run. (Which might well be partially because I don't like this game/port, but the fact remains I wasn't entertained).

It's actually only 01:26.58 faster than the previous submission. The other submission only stops input after the credits. That said, it's still over 3 minutes slower than the NES version. Don't think the version switch makes remotely near that much difference.

Looks like deception. I can't think of any other reason. The VBM file looks like it was deliberately tampered with before he submitted it, as VBA automatically corrects the value in the header when loading a file. (Though it isn't really effective deception either way, because as soon as you load the file in VBA you can see the correct length).

For the record, it turned out that the author modified the frame count in the VBM header in both movies (which is why those only showed up as 1 minute long). I've fixed both movies.
