Another hex edit? Can't you just make a fresh movie, and try to improve it everywhere?
What, again? :P Or maybe I'm thinking of a different sonic game. There sure have been lots of sonic runs lately. What happened to the curse of sonic games?

Could you improve the search slightly by making it look at every object in the room to see if they're cream pies/etc? I think there's a command that cycles through every object in the room.

Tasing a mixture of originals and hacks just to round it out seems fundamentally wrong somehow. Why not do as many hacks as you can at once?

It doesn't seem to be a good game to TAS, anyway. Like other 'mystery dungeon' games, optimal play consists of manipulating the stairs to be as easy to get to as possible over and over again.

As long as every hit is as early as possible, just make sure to keep him on screen as much as possible and make him do silly antics/near misses/other oddities. If there are any movement glitches that aren't useful for saving time, boss fights would be a good place to show them off.

As much as I enjoyed the movie (Sonic Battle! man, I haven't played that in ages) I don't feel it's appropriate as a movie on tasvideos because: 1. It lacks a goal that can be optimized towards 2. it doesn't hold the universal, obvious showoff of TASing ability appeal that the tetris playaround video has It certainly has its place on youtube, though!

Getting max everything on Emerl would take hours and hours and hours. (Well, I guess you could put it on fast forward and come back to verify that it does give maximum stats.)

As far as TASing goes, if something is controlled by 'luck' and there is an easy way to change what the game is using for 'luck' (i.e. taking any action that forces the game to roll a random number) then you can make luck do as you please with enough effort.

It would be an entertaining novelty if any emulators supported the effects of 'crooked cartridging'

It would lower entertainment value, most importantly. Keen has quirky controls and is easy to kill (and the time penalty for dieing is high), so a good TAS should show off as many levels as possible, imo.

Thanks for responding. Sounds like all the 'delays' before phasing through pits were to get the glitch to work then.

Tasvideos specifically allows hacks now, and the hack seems good, so unless you feel the run is suboptimal why reject it? Going through the youtube videos. I haven't played this hack so I'm just raising everything that looks like it's worth looking into. Video 1: bubble man: 0:29 - could you have jumped early to maximize falling speed or would that make the phasing fail to work? 0:42 - could you have jumped early here? It looks like you'd hit the mines but just making sure. 1:04 - jump earlier so you don't hit your head against the wall and stop moving forward? 1:05 - jump earlier to fall through the floor faster? unless, again, it makes the phasing fail. perhaps questions like these would be answered with an explanation of the conditions under which bottomless pits are 'phased through'. is it caused by sprite limitations? 1:08 - the wait is long enough to look deliberate, I'm just curious as to what it manipulates metal man: 2:32 - take a hit from the first spike crusher and phase through the second? 3:05 - I presume the enemy here can't be spammed to death faster than taking the hit? 3:35 - gut feeling says this boss fight could be improved, but if you've made sure all hits are as early as possible then okay quick man: 5:31 - jump a bit earlier? video 2: heat man: 0:20 - jump earlier? (bottomless pit again) wood man: I'm amused that his level is glitched up like in the MM2 wood man's TAS. coincidence? clash man: 4:24 - assuming you don't use up the rest of your jumping charges later, this would be a good place to grab the ladder at a higher altitude video 3: (btw you could have uploaded video 3 and 4 as one video, the limit on youtube is 15 minutes) wily 1: 1:49 - LOL, this is the best use of the 'phase through bottomless pits' glitch so far wily 2: 3:35 - not a speed issue but entertainment, you could consider messing around more during the parts where you're waiting for the next boss part to spawn video 4: wily 4: 0:57 - lmao you completely broke it, good job overall I was impressed with this, it had clever use of the jumping/invincibility powers and bottomless pit phasing and aside from a couple of areas I highlighted didn't seem obviously suboptimal.

Feasibly you could have a movie format which came with snapshots of the game's RAM at every X frames built into the file, so that a request to go to frame X could be carried out by jumping to the closest savestate that's earlier than it and fastforwarding until you're at that point. Not sure if it'd be worth it or not.

The Simpsons Arcade game is known for its cheapness and unfairness. While the TNMT machine is also really unfair, it might not be as obvious to people that have not played it. The good thing is that most enemies last only one hit in this game, so it has a better rythm than most arcades of its kind. On the other hand, I think you could have made a more entertaining use of 4 players in this run. Voting yes.
Oo, I'd love a Simpsons Arcade TAS!

It sounds like it'd be a lot less of a headache to 'casually' TAS it, as oppose to optimize it.

A better goal than coinless might be 'ascetic' where you're allowed to get no points, or when you're forced to the minimum number of points possible. (One would assume end of level bonuses would be ignored to minimize boring waiting.) To show how many thing give you points, there's a level in a Super Mario World hack that kills you if you get points, demonstrated here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzcKU6L-88s

If it needs to be objective, how about things like: -Doesn't exit the field of view -Doesn't enter walls

pretentious java code golfing (with line breaks added in)
class A{static{try{for(int i=0,j,z=System.in.read()&7,k=z*6-2;i<k;i++){ for(j=0;j<(j<k?3*Math.min(z+i,k*5/6f-i):0);)System.out.print(" \\__/ ".charAt(j++>3*Math.max(z-i-1,i-3*z)?(i*3+j)%6:5)); System.out.println();}}catch(Exception e){}}}
Encodes on youtube should be tagged with as many terms related to the game itself, to TASing, to speedrunning, to glitching, etc as one can come up with, to maximize the chance they'll come up in a relevant search. For instance, you might tag a TAS with alternative names and spellings for the game, the platform it's on, what company made the game, potentially other games closely related to that game, generic terms like 'tool assisted speedrun speed run beaten glitch glitchy glitched zipping'... Unless there's evidence that adding too many tags lowers the 'power' of each tag?

Technically a sufficiently in-depth gameshark code could alter your character and then patch other places in the code to not crash in light of this, but it's probably the case that no one wants to go to all the trouble of figuring that out.

Likely the game just isn't designed for the main character to be changed like that.

I believe the moon's purpose is as a super-star, akin to how the moon in Super Mario World is a super-1up (a 3up). EDIT: Nevermind, apparently it's the other way around.
