Wow, a Nitemare 3D TAS! I was wondering when this game would get a look. And wow, the movement is ridiculous! I'll have to watch this on 50% speed when an official encode is out. Yes vote.

My question is, why isn't DonkeyKongGenius's TAS on TASVideos? I mean, why make a TAS and not bring it here?
There are lots of reasons: -It takes time and effort to figure out how to submit to TASVideos, including documentation, writing notes and assembling supporting material. -Some people don't even know TASVideos exists, or if they do, or what the submission process involves. -There may be a language or cultural barrier. -You may not be stopped by any of the above, but for personal reasons or due to a dispute not wish to submit to or support the site. -You may not consider the TAS worthy of the site, or want it to stand on its own/'just for fun'.

How many games have that DPCM exploit?
AFAIK: -Every NES game that uses DPCM has a high likelihood of having DPCM glitch ACE -Only a few games have been confirmed to have it work, among them SMB2 and Open Tournament Golf

I think games that have ACE only using DPCM glitch should be listed separately. ACE is ACE, but DPCM glitch related ACE is so far removed from any semblance of having to follow the game and its programming that it feels unfair to the game. (Similarly, ACE that requires modifying save data separately, or sending invalid data along a link cable or similar device, should be listed but as a separate category)

The implicit, but unstated, rule motivating Warp's posts seems to be that a playaround can't use ACE, only a demo can.

I think so, more information here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=443235#443235 If FBA doesn't work for your TASing purposes, try FBA Shuffle.

If xy2_'s posts here http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56374. are still accurate, then FBA is now the best rerecording emulator for making arcade TASes in, not FBA-rr. (FBA-rr was a very old fork made to provide basic TASing input, then never really updated. So FBA itself getting rerecording functionality means you're working with the most up to date version of the emulator AND officially supported tools.) I am interested in all score attack shmup TAS work, I'll keep an eye on this too!

Edit: And just to add to my frustration, I figured out a way to save about a minute to a minute-and-a-half (over the whole run) in the autoscrolling parts by dying at the right spot in the level and abusing the game's "halfway point" markers. Not much fun to watch, though.... :)
Well, if optimizing the game's clear time is now non-trivial, you can aim for Vault... ;)

There's a PC Super Meat Boy TAS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JHPrmQS29k It was ALMOST possible to do in Hourglass and submit. The biggest problem is that the loading times were non-deterministic each time you tried to play it back. So instead, each level was TASed and recorded separately, and then it was all spliced together to look like a continuous playthrough. There is one other concern. Super Meat Boy's physics are tied to the framerate. So if a frame takes longer or shorter, the physics will act differently. (The most extreme example is that by doing something to freeze Windows Super Meat Boy briefly, you can lag-glitch through walls, Donkey Kong 64 style) I'm not sure if this is also a problem on consoles that causes indeterminism or not. To my knowledge it has not been TASed on any system besides PC. So you'd be the first to explore it if you go that path.

So the solution is to add X time for each loading screen, where X is how long the average loading screen takes on the strongest realistic computer you could play on (high end consumer computer, best CPUs/GPUs/SSDs, $10000 budget limit say). That way you're simulating speedrunning and timing on optimal hardware.

Yeah, if it doesn't ever save time, you shouldn't take damage/miss attacks except for rhythmic or entertainment reasons/etc.

Other good choices for April 1st: low% with underflow, moonwalk%, OoB but no ACE, 99%, Spore Spawn RTA

I'm thinking of picking up this game within the next couple of months and am wondering what people's thoughts are on normal vs hard mode. I know that the site rules are generally to avoid such modes when it just involves buffing enemy HP, but the nico TAS does use Hard Mode. What do you guys think?
If hard mode requires fundamentally more interesting strategies, rather than just 'do the same thing but for twice as long', it's worth considering.

When it comes time to obsolete Secrets of Evemore 100%, you should talk to TheAngryPanda - author of the current any% TAS, and they've figured out routes for various 100%-like categories (including all bosses) that would be suitable replacements for this old TAS.

Do we know if it's a glitch or an intentional way to access the debug menu? (Analysis of the code may be required at this point.)

I actually went out of my way to do some careful measurements of my own and physically count the number of pixels on the screen. I can say with a very high degree of certainty there's 176x104 pixels after counting. So to me, this value would make sense as the proper one. I'm just curious as to which one is correct and how would we know?
Is there a high enough quality photo that could be used to independently verify the number of pixels? EDIT: Spikestuff wants me to post this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellivision#Technical_specifications > 159 pixels wide by 96 pixels high (159x192 display on a TV screen, scanlines being doubled)

You can't just add weird rules to your run and expect it to make it better. Giving this a No.
While slightly arbitrary, it has merit for being impossible to accomplish RTA.

Oh, that reminds me. When (if?) the FF9 100% TAS is finished, it will be the longest TAS on the site - over 12 hours in length.

It's sadly not the longest, but this April Fools style TAS of Rampage is amusing. Every time you use a continue, the game advances slightly no matter where you are, so if you just continue for 7 hours, the game beats itself with no meaningful gameplay. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5400&highlight= If every speedrun category had a TAS, the longest TAS would be the same as the longest speedrun - Baten Kaitos 100%. https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/3s2rk5/wr_baten_kaitos_100_in_3450312/ Because to get 100% in Baten Kaitos you have to wait for the Shampoo to evolve, which takes 2 weeks in real time, it is impossible to complete the run any faster than that. (Time losses are to menuing during the 2 weeks, getting the shampoo from the start of the run, and going from the shampoo evolving to beating the final boss) AFAIK all the real time speedruns that are theoretically longer but have never been finished single segment are so long because of huge amounts of RNG, so TASes of them would probably be faster than a Baten Kaitos 100% TAS. Another good candidate for an absurdly long TAS would be Super Mario 64 "120 stars, minimum A presses", as many A press minimizing strategies require you to perform repetitive actions for hours at a time (for speed to build up, to overflow/underflow water level, cloning over and over, etc).

Some of the timing and randomness changes are possibly suspect. It has to be deterministic for playback, but actually altering the behavior is questionable. I'll let others weigh in on this what they think.
Based on 'Such an execution is always consistent with a possible execution in the base game.' I think it's OK. (I think the idea is that it's morally equivalent to RNG manipulating each screen shake so that relevant entities don't load sooner or later, which you could eventually do by e.g. changing what system time the TAS is started on, or whatever causes the RNG initial state to change.)
