I have a question about the using two players. I'm working on Kirby's dream land 3. It is a one player run. Player two can be created as a helper. What I'm wondering if it would still be considered a one player run if I only made my helper twice in the entire game to save time. He would only be out for a few seconds before I get rid of him. granted, it would save a ton of time, so I'm not sure if it should be allowed. I'm currently trying to find a glitch that may let me get through the part without using player two, but no luck so far. I'm hoping I can find a glitch though since it would be the greatest moment of the whole movie if I could find one. I'm only thinking of using player two as a last resort.

Two videos I made myself. They really are crap quality. They are montages of in game footage of the DS games I had at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeLOf_Jh4vc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2op0hJUvhc

Cool stuff indeed. It's probably a good idea to keep it on hold for a bit as it seems this game probably isn't near being 100% broken. It would suck if you were near finished with your TAS and you found another game breaking glitch.
I had actually made a comic about this previous to reading this. In case anybody cares to read it, here's a link. http://pekopon.deviantart.com/art/This-better-not-happen-69648770

I'm very glad you think this way. It would be boring, and it would mean a ton more work for dumb stuff. I'm having difficulty figuring out how to beat the bosses the first time. I have a planned strategy for Ado, I have a tentative plan for Acro. (I'm not sure if the way I do it would save time. It looks in favour of it, but I'm not sure) I have no plans for Pon & Con. (All of Sand Canyon is hard) And I'm pretty much stuck with needle for Dedede (You get Needle in the last level) Dark Matter and 0 are my biggest fear in this run.

Read up on the various arguments for when to end a movie. Like I said, I'm a fan of option #1, from the way you're writing it sounds like you're more a fan of #2. There's no right answer, so just chose which one works best in this case. Hope this helps.
I'm still a little confused. I'd like the credits to roll. I know how to turn it off. What I'm thinking is that on the frame that the final hit is delivered is when I end the movie. The only problem with that is that Kirby can still move around while the boss' death animation is going, and during the fade out of the screen after he's died. If I were to end the movie on the final blow, Kirby would just be sitting there for a few seconds. Would this still be okay?

Oh yeah! I get it now. I remember that now. It's just like in the runs posted it says "Movie End" when the last input was made. I guess in the case of Kirby's Dream Land 3, It would have to be after the 0 battle screen disappears since you can still input movement during that fading out part. The battle with 0 is the part I'm the most afraid of. I have to figure out if swiping it with the actual stick rather than the heart is stronger. I know it is for the first form at least.

Hmm. I'm not quite sure what you mean by ending input, or stop the move and let the credits roll. Is there a way to stop frames from counting, but letting the credits roll too?

Hey Pekopon - I just watched your WIP and I'm mostly impressed to this point (hurrah for Coo zipping around at full speed continuously). I do have a couple of comments I wanted to raise:
  • In 1-3 in the downward scrolling room immediately after the minigame it feels as though you could get to the door there sooner somehow. I am wondering if avoiding inhaling the enemies would help (despite how awesome that is, as I know it's darn near impossible in real time).
  • There are a couple of points in 1-4 where you take damage; I believe this is faster than the alternative of waiting for the enemies to move out of the way, but you should still make this clear in your notes when the run is done and you have submission text to write.
  • There's a point in 1-6 in the tall room where you reattach to Kine only to drop him again a few seconds later. I doubt there are any savings in time from doing this, much less enough to warrant sitting through the associated animation.
.
First off, I'm glad to see someone else has watched my run. I thank you. Now I shall answer your questions. #1 Yes, I probably could have gotten down there a bit quicker. Just worked out that way. Though I might have died by going too low to the bottom of the screen. It was (I think) very near as close as I could go. As for inhaling the Nruffs, It is actually much quicker to eat them rather than try to avoid them or take damage. Also, Swallowing all four at once with Coo is impossible unless you know that pressing (A) can make you swallow in the air. If you were to go against the ground to swallow, you wouldn't make it in time. #2 Yes, I will probably mention that, though it's a given that in Tool assisted runs, you only ever take damage to save time. ;D #3 While it is a bit clumsy looking, it is by far faster. After I get back on Kine, there are a lot of tall jumps that Kirby can't make on his own jumping ability. (maybe if he had Hi-Jump) :P The one thing I'm disappointed with is the Mini-boss fight. It was nearly as fast as possible, but didn't look too impressive. I'm also amazed that nobody (all 4 people following this) mentioned the Kine jumping in the last room of 1-5. I will now say that it was overall faster to jump than run on the logs. It's faster to run on the logs as Kirby, but not with Kine. One might think "Get rid of Kine then!" I need him to make his wife "Mine" Happy, (that is Kine's wife.) and he is important for the next level. I hope you continue to follow this. It's nice to see Dream Land 3 fans. And keep in mind, I'm not doing the sub games after the game (boss butch, jump, and MG5) Using the turbo fly would take a lot of time since Kirby would have to do his air puff and start his running again. It may look a little strange, but it's worth it. Also, I was able to get a precise spot for kirby to stoneify for the big drop a lot easier with Kine's spit. It should also be known that Kine spitting Kirby out is actually faster than his run. (only useful in certain circumstances)

I'm working on my Kirby's Dream Land 3 run, and I was wondering the rules about watching the credits. In Dream Land 3, you can skip the credits. I was wondering if I had to watch them or not. Is it a rule that you have to watch the credits? Another factor is that If I go for the 100%, I'll have to watch the credits twice, only, the second credits has different drawings from Ado. I was thinking that since the both Credits are different, would I have to watch both? I think the best approach would be to skip it the first time, and watch it the second time. If anyone can help me with this problem, I'd be grateful. Though I'm thinking I won't do the extra three things to get the 100%, so I would only need to watch it once. To get 100%, you have to get everything in the main game to get 97%. After the game resets, you have to beat three sub games that take a long time and are extremely random.

Yeah, I know it's only one level, but I do a lot of neat stuff in it. In this level, you have to water the sprouts for them to grow into flowers. Everyone should know by now that sprites have a certain area around them that is the point where you can make contact with them. (poorly explained again) What I discovered, (or I'm at least pretty sure) is that the sprouts' area of contact is the same as if the whole flower sprite was there. This results in me being able to leave rooms before the water blob actually hits the sprout, and have it still count. I also did some neat jumping tricks in this level. I have supplied a state save file so you don't have to fast forward through the movie. I'm not sure if it will work though. It works for me at least. Movie file http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1469050302/Kirby%27s%20Dream%20Land%2038765%20%28U%29.smv State save file http://rapidshare.com/files/69279261/Kirby_s_Dream_Land_3__U_.008.html Also, just in case anybody cares, I made a comic about my biggest fear in making this run is. Don't worry, I'm not gonna turn this into an art thread. "Discovered a Glitch Comic" http://pekopon.deviantart.com/art/This-better-not-happen-69648770

Wow! such praise! Well like I said, I couldn't have done it without you and the others here. You may not know this, but my other hobby is drawing. You may find this comic I drew about me doing the speed run mildly entertaining. Though my speed run comics didn't go over well on a certain other speed run site. :( And no, I'm not a girl. I just use the orange haired girl to represent me since she's my favourite of my characters. I have a feeling other TASers have experienced what I have in this comic. http://pekopon.deviantart.com/art/Grass-Land-complete-69568470

What?! I replayed that video lots of times and never saw that. Perhaps you got confused at the unlocking part though. when you get all of the Heart-Stars in a world, you blow up a black piece under that world and get to go to the next world. If you didn't get all heart-stars in a world before beating the boss, it just shows the next path being opened. (very badly explained.) Oh, and for improvements in the first two stages, did you mean by using two players? cause this is a one player run. Oh and I'd like to thank floogal for his damage chart. I already knew that parasol was strong, but I will now have to consider Keeping Rick from 4-5 to use through 4-6. I always get needle at the end of that level to use at Ado (which IS the same character as Adeline) So keeping Rick may be worth it for the faster boss fight. Am starting next world today.

Sorry to double post, but an important discovery has been made. As I had previously mentioned, The ideal jump mini game is to jump instantly and land on the fourth square. However, the first frame the you are allowed to jump on, changes between different item set ups. This meaning that on some setups, the first frame you are allowed to jump on will only get you to the second square. Because of this, you need to get one of the set ups that lets you jump the first frame possible. I have discovered that for some reason, the (Y) button determines what the set up will be. This is why I could only get it to work in the second stage by inhaling (Y button) It changes the set up for each frame you hold it down for. It doesn't only effect the set up in the heart star room. any time in the stage you press the Y button, it will change the set up. This is also true for jumping (B) but I don't know if it changes for every frame you hold it down for. Holding (Y) also effects (to a much lesser extent) which Gordo will appear first in the first mini game. I also discovered that the next gordo face is affected by the frame you select the answer for the previous one (was that too complex or just poorly explained?) So therefore, you may see me randomly inhale in the heart star room. just so you know. It's much harder to do properly with an animal friend (or at least coo) since their inhaling sequence lasts a long time before it stops. Kirby can jump and inhale without wasting frames since he can shut his mouth before hitting the ground. I'm not sure if this applies to Chu Chu and Rick (or Blob and Hom as my brother and I call them) since they don't have actual inhaling animations. I discovered a small form of Luck manipulation! *Woot!* And just so you know, stages 1-3 are done....again I still have desync issues, and I have some lag on stage 3. I hope that doesn't affect the publishing chance too much. *dreams* *edit 1* it seems that the (Y) manipulator only works when you don't have an ability. So if you want to keep an ability to the next stage, you either have to do the jump manipulation, (which I technically haven't checked to see if it works whilst wielding an ability) or just get danged lucky. That is what happened to me in stage 3 and 4. Speaking of stage 4, for the very first time, I'm not only IN stage 5, but nearly finished it! Granted, it is a very short stage, if not the shortest in the entire game. I still need to keep stone (or "heavy" as my brother calls it) for stage 6, so I'll need to get lucky on the jump game thing. Nobody has posted here for quite some time except for me, so I'm beginning to wonder if all interest has been lost. Oh well. I'll keep working on it since I've got nothing better to do. *edit 2* Finally! Grass Land completed! Go check it out! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/304874474/Copy%20of%20Kirby%27s%20Dream%20Land%203%20%28U%29.smv My Whispy fight was very fast. The Boboo Mini boss was fast, but looked sort of sloppy. I thought about going back, but I was already half way through the next stage, and I did not feel the urge to go back to stage 4. (I had never gotten a run to last past stage 4 before) There are some lag problems in stage 3, but sometimes they don't occur. I'm very proud of this run! And just so people don't ask, I'll mention this. At one point in stage 6, you can get Coo. Coo's turbo flying is pretty fast. I did not get Coo because I would lose a ton of time with the way I play this stage. There was some sort of graphic error in stage 6 in the room where I get parasol. By using Stone there, you're supposed to go below the screen. for some reason or other, it stayed centered on kirby. You may also find it strange that I took my Parasol out in the last room of stage 6. I did this because I needed to press (Y) to manipulate the ending jump game. The (Y) manipulation works to a much lesser extent when you have an ability.[/url]

Majora's Mask has always been one of my favourite games, although not for it being fun to play. The Atmosphere of the game is what draws me to it. The sad, creepy, scary, depressing feeling I experience while playing or watching it make me love this game. On to the run. I really loved this run for several reasons, but I can't think of them all off the top of my head. This was the very first time I had seen the Bomb glitches, (except for bomb goron jump) so that was the big reason. I loved how everything was planned out so perfectly since this is a very hard game. The Romani Ranch "them" sequence it the scariest part of the game, and is the scariest part of any game I've played. (I play non scary games) I loved how casually they were delt with. I always slow time for that because I always fail if I don't. Not only was it done in fast mode, but was done so recklessly (let the thing go (most likely) to the last possible frame before "them" got to the barn) that I was almost frustrated by it. I'm always franticly running around during that part, so that was something I was impressed by. I loved how quickly boss and mini bosses died (those mini bosses that you actually fought) I loved how many of the necessary items were skipped. The things I did not like about the run (though granted, unavoidable) were how the credits didn't have any of the happy endings, and I found the part were you got past the goron without the lullaby to actually be long and boring. I hope you continue to make runs as awesome as this one! It's one of my favourite runs on this site!

I for one would love to see this game. I was never any good at link to the past since it was pretty hard for me. (I've beat it maybe twice) I read the description for the rom on a site and it said that you had to really know your tricks from Link to the Past to beat this. I don't dare play it. So I'd love to see this as I would otherwise never see it. (same as it was with super demo bros. I was never good at super mario world) :P Answer for Q1: As much as I don't like being called J, (Although JXQ was heard to say in his commentary for OOT "It's a SWEET #%!@ing name!") I think it would still be a good idea to just put "A" or something. You'll be skipping all of the text anyways, so it's not like it'll "ruin" it like it would if you read the text. Answer for Q2: Oh I know! blow up all the walls! XD I've never played the game, so I don't know :P Answer for Q3: I'm not sure what determines a "good game to run" If it's a zelda game, chances are it's a good game to run. (except wind waker. All of that sailing? Boring!) One thing I don't know if you already asked is that Hacks generally aren't allowed unless they're approved by the authorities here. I assume this one would be fine since It's a whole different game layout wise, and is a fairly famous hack. I'm not sure who you'd ask about that. I'm sure I read something about it in the FAQ in the front page. The stupidest Hack I ever played was Kirby's Adventure "Evil Kirby Hack" All it was was that the walking sprites have a line connecting at the top of his eyes making him look (not really) evil. It only had the evil eyes on the walking and running though. All other sprites were left the same. stupid eh? I will try again to find the proper rom to download. Where did you get the rom? perhaps you could send me a link to where I can get the rom through Private Message. Good Luck on this!

I have a big problem here. I started recording my run and have got to the point where I need player 2. To my horror, I never selected the 2nd joypad for recording. Is there someway I can keep my file, but have the second joypad selected?

Don't get the wrong idea by the title. I don't drink. I don't know if it's just me, or if it's cause I'm new at TASing, but after about an hour (sometimes longer) of using the frame advance, when I get off the computer, it feels like everything is going in frame advance speed for about 5 or 10 minutes. It's an odd feeling, but it happens when I've been working on my run for too long. I was wondering if anybody else gets this?

Not trying to be smart or anything, but I'm just doing 97% For the 100%, you have to do the mini games, the jump game, and the boss butch. I'm gonna skip that. *edit* Now have stages 1 and 2 done. 169 frames faster than Comicalflop's due to spark chu chu. (not bragging) http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/993442708/Kirby%27s%20Dream%20Land%203656%20%28U%29.smv can anybody actually view this? because if nobody can even see it, I'll stop posting my WIP every stage. Stage 4 will be a major pain since I might have to do it twice. I'm gonna see if taking nago at the half way point in the stage is faster than taking coo. Nago can beat up the mini boss a lot quicker. (only two hits required) and navigate through the cave part quicker. I have to see if taking coo at the last section of the stage would make up for it. I think it probably will, so I may have to redo part of the stage. I can get through the first two parts of that stage with coo very quickly and skillfully. Unless anyone can view these, I might wait till the end of grass land to post. I'm very anxious to finish the fourth stage since I've redone this run a few times and always ended up restarting at the end of stage 4 *edit 2* speaking of restarting.......... I have to bloody restart again. I'm getting lots of desync issues, and I looked in a thread about Snesx9 desync, and noticed I had one of the things selected that causes desync. Also, I fast forward through my run during playback. I'm not supposed to do that. So yeah. Restart. @%&! At least I got to the point where I knew taking nago in the fourth stage was slower. So I'll have to take Coo. I am quickly losing enthusiasm since I still haven't gotten past stage 4. It's nice how stage 3 is relatively short and easy though. *edit 3* I had some really weird desync problems at the end of stage 2. I eventually got it working though. This run through is much faster than my last one so far. By jumping right away at the end of stage jump game, you jump to the fourth square and save tons of time. Though getting that to work is a nightmare. It seems that it only works in certain set ups. The set ups are determined by something, but I'm not sure what. The first stage I got lucky and it worked first try. The second stage is where I had desync trouble. I could get the setup to work and jump it properly, but the playback didn't like it and made me jump else where and then desync. Half of my re-records are because of this. The only way I could get the right set up was to inhale while getting the Heart Star. If I just ran and got it, it would give me a set up that wouldn't work. Somehow or other I did get it to work. It was either by redoing the run from a certain room, or by turning the right+left/up+down on. I did both at the same time, so I'm not sure which fixed it. I hope changing the setting doesn't further desync my video. This run is way faster, but I can't compare to my last video anymore since that video had desunk by the point I'm at in my new run

I really think that a two player run would be too complicated for me. Keep in mind, this is my very first run, and quite an ambitious one if you ask me. I'm a newbie at TASing, so don't ask the unreasonable. (that may have sounded rude, but it was not intended to be so) It's like asking a kindergardener to read Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix. (which is hard by my standards. I don't read too much) I'll probably end up using gooey sometimes, but not always. He may pop out once and a while to save a bit of time or carry an animal friend, but that's probably all. Also, I figured out how to properly work the left and right turbo. You only turn the turbo on for like, one frame. IF I ever finish this one, I MIGHT (but highly unlikely) do a full blown two player run, eventually, some day, maybe. Aren't there separate categories for 1 and 2 player runs anyway?

Well it's nice ta meet'cha! I didn't know you could record files on ZSNES. Like I knew you could record, but I didn't know you could save the files outside of the program. just a quick note that I thought I'd mention. I'm losing lots of time by not being able to start running at the start of a room right away. I cannot find a proper turbo for left and right. I'd love it if someone could tell me a way to use it. The turbo left and right with the hotkeys don't really work for kirby's running. Also, I'll explain why I got spark (now that I know it saved time by getting it) At the very end of the first level, I got spark. (i used the go in door and get power at same time glitch (which I really got to figure out how to make work every time.)) In the second level, to get into the room with the green spring guy, (he has a name, but I'm too lazy to look it up. Did you ever notice he looks like a butt? (that's what Chu Chu said to him in the Kirby's Dream Land 3 4koma manga)) you have to break a bunch of Star Blocks blocking the door. Comical flop broke them by getting off of Chu Chu, sliding into the blocks, jumping to destroy the ones above, and then get back on Chu Chu. With the spark ability from the previous level, I can use Chu Chu's spark attack (the equivalent of Laser from Kirby's Adventure) to break all the block in one go without having to get off of chu chu, and wasting time with the animation when you get back on chu chu. By doing this, I saved a whopping 183 frames! :O Akk! My show's starting! *logs out*

That must be a hassle. Too bad your brother left. I now have a great accomplishment (in my opinion) that has really got me into this now. I was able to beat Comical flop's level 1 by *drumroll* 4 frames! :O Yeah I know. It's not much, but it's a huge success and enthusiasm boost for me! But I have Comicalflop to thank for this. I got really motivated and vowed I would beat his level 1. My original attempt was crap compared to this. I saw little things in his run I knew I could do better, so I had the confidence to do it. So here is my Stage 1 "super" run! YOSH1's 2 player run is about 86 frames faster. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1571632398/Kirby%27s%20Dream%20Land%203654%20%28U%29.smv *edit* I've looked over this level carefully, and I can't find anything I could do to improve it. Looks like this is the one after all! Thanks again for motivating me ComicalFlop!

Yes, well please take into consideration that you have two people and I don't. Am starting over once again to try and fix things up. I'm not sure if taking nago was faster though. *edit* my stage 1 is going really well so far. At the point where I am in the level, I'm only 139 frames behind Comicalflop's time. I actually had a little trick that might have put me ahead of him, But I needed to sacrifice time to get spark. I need spark for the second stage for a trick that will hopfully make up for the lost time, if not put me ahead. If at any point in the run I can get ahead of his time, that will be a motivation boost. Though I may end up losing time in the fourth level. I am going to use coo until I can get nago. I will then make gooey and let him take nago. Hopefully the way I do things can save time in the long run. Though Coo would be nice to have for the first part of stage 5. We'll see what happens. Flop got rid of stone, but I have a good use for it in stage 6. Hopefully that will make up for some lost time. *edit 2* Having realized that I can get spark at the end of the level without wasting any time, I am now only 21 frames behind Flop. A small enough number to easily make up for in stage two with my spark trick. (though I have not yet finished stage 1, so I may be further behind by then.)
