I just want to know why he does some particular things to speed up the run : - luck manipulation - trade-off - entertainment - plot to advance, events to trigger - etc.

The Langrisser series make the only TAS lasting more than 20 minutes, that I can watch without skipping. It's all thanks to you ars, so congratulations ! Voted yes. Only drawback ; commentary was not enough for me, had to read description while watching to (try to) follow what was going on.

I voted yes, but I have a feeling the entertainment value would improve if the waiting moments of the ant were replaced by carefully planned moves. Like, during the toppling, going as far as possible from the exit, then suddenly turn around and arrive at the door the moment it opens.

I showed the encode to TAS first-timers, and they wouldn't believe me when I told them the input was the same. Are the 4 videos sync'd ? Would it be possible to display the input on the Youtube encode ?

-- english You need a bios file to run the emulator. The bios of a (modern) console could be compared to the OS like Windows to the computer or device. You need to find it on your own and set it up in the emulator.

Great movie, it's the first time I managed to watch such a long TAS without getting bored... in 10 years ! Any updates on the subtitles ? There are so many things that raise questions, like, why wouldn't the player attack commanders ASAP when they're in range, or, is it possible to manipulate the enemy to move less ?

C'est non, je trouve ça carrément louche venant d'un arrivant. Tu débarques et tu veux qu'on aille sur ton site ? C'est pas très poli. Pourquoi ne le fais tu pas ici, il y a la fonctionnalité que tu cherches.

I agree, overall speed is low and the flying does not help showing any skill thus entertainement. Also, music was a real show-stopper.

Reminds me of Castlevania. It looks great so far, if the speed is sustained it'll keep watchers entertained. How long do you think the final movie will last ?

TAS Quake ? Human records are already very high, games have been done to death. How do you intend to (help) make a TAS more entertaining ? Is it even worth the effort ?

You'd get a lot more interest if you'd show what the game is for the 99.99% of people who'd never heard of it.

Brandon, do you think you could insert the subtitles in your Youtube post ? I'd be very grateful.

I'm actually very interested in the subject. I'd really want to make my own (SMS) emulator. I tried to read the code but failed, because it lacks everything a shared programming project has : specifications, build instructions, KISS and reusability. Also, I loath C/C++ and low level programming, maybe because I do Java for a living. For those reasons I feel entitled to proclaim that this project failed its educational purpose. If anyone managed to do his/her own emulator thanks to this, please enlighten me, I'm lost. All in all, it's a raw demonstration of skill, that I truly admire, and wish I could reproduce, but to me the best developer still is the one whose code can be understood by the most people. If the topic had presented the project as art instead of education, things'd have been very different. Narcissism would become personal creative touch. Also, I'm sorry if it sounded harsh. I'd really like to hear more of the process that turned the console's specs into code ; yet I disregard any "only doers may criticize" as I'm too old for this shit, Riggs.

Too bad the narcissism and the code golf killed all the educational purpose.

Looking good so far. Keep'em coming. I tried the game myself but everything was in Japanese. What's your ROM good name ?

I've downloaded every picross game faq I could find on gamefaqs and processed them in my (crude) tool. I've played many, included the 30x30 that are usually proposed as 4 separated 15x15 puzzles, and guesses are actually very rare, thanks to the efforts from the Nintendo game designers. So it's possible to work with just the indications, I just have to find how to extract the memory addresses... when my analyzing algorithm is decent enough. I'll try to learn LUA by reading your code and plug my tool into yours.

Hahaha, will do. I'm guessing it reads the solution from memory and try the shortest path. I still have that program that plays with just the screen indications. It solves maybe 50% of the GB levels and 30% of SNES. I work on it when I'm very bored. See you again in 5 years !

How far are we from an encoding process triggered by the submission ? Setting up a box to encode automagically for the older 8 bits consoles, then upload it somewhere... I'm also wondering if an embedded application (Java Applet or Flash, likely) could run from a server with the submitted movie, thus removing the need for encodes. Yeah I know, it would need some serious development skills to improve existing emulators to work remotely, but many of them already support command line options, especially rom and movie replay. This would solve (in a not so distant future) the problem.
