the movie is saved within the savestates to help the player always having a synchronized movie when he switched between slots (bullet proof), but the opposite is false. savestates are only a way to redo, and rerecord some parts of the game into the movie, which is saved separatedly. they are only employed during the making of the movie to assist the player. the movie is a mere recording of the input (it also saves the number of times the movie was rewind ie some parts were redone, rerecorded thanks to savestates). players only submit this movie, the rules forbid to submit savestates and the first command in the movie MUST be a hard reset (optionnaly SRAM files are accepted). then, you playback the whole movie which is now continuous ; that's how the divx here are done. hope that clear things, and I did not say anything wrong u_u.

it's called desync(hronization). say, the input recording (the movie) is stored in a separated place from the savestates. you use frame advance (frame by frame playing/recording). you record up to frame X, savestate there (slot 1), creating segment A. now you keep recording up to frame Y, savestate into slot 2, that makes segment B. now you load slot 1, and start doing the segment B differently, let's call it B'. if you accidentally load slot 2, your movie is screwed : the input recorded so far, and the state the machine is now at, represent 2 different branches (B and B') and the sync is lost. if you start recording again, you will append incoherent data to the movie, since the new moves you're recording only have a meaning into a context where the previous input cannot lead to. playback of the movie will show the intended movie up to frame X, then the character will do crap. if you have bulletproof recording, the movie that brought to the state in slot 2 was saved within the state, and has been loaded with the state, keeping both in synch. hope that was clear enough (I neved tas'ed <_<). I highly recommand that you get in touch with upthorn. he already coded rerecording features into others emulators, he will be able to answer programming questions, as he said he wants to help the community to get a sms rerecording emulator.

*cough* so I guess Bock's option is dead now, and xebra left. upthorn, I know this sounds a bit heavy for your shoulders, but would you take on the infamous task now ? you proposed to add sms support to the rerecording version of gens. what basis would you take ? Meka's, as you said it gave good emulating results ? from scratch ? do you have plans to, say, find time to code this during this year ? please keep us in touch. to the other people : if you really want to see sms tas, please post your interest in this topic and try to encourage coders to create that missing emulator for us. (yeah it does look desperate.) let's keep hope and sms ftw ! :D

it means that you have posted more than 500 messages, but you never submitted a movie, hence you're not a player. http://tasvideos.org/MostActivePosters.html

it does not matter. people are free to vote whatever they want, whenever they want, even if it's not based on good reasons or blatantly break the rules. the voting system automatically takes care of this, a bit like in winter sports when the best and worst notes are excluded before calculating the average note in ski jumping or ice skating. no need to blame anyone.

a simple copy/paste in google gave : http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~wilkins/writing/Handouts/vgs/lincoln.html I guess the whole text is a mix of famous (parting) speeches. see you soon xebra, we count on you to produce sms tas once (soon) the emulator is there.

Golvellius and Golden Axe Warrior, the 2 sms zelda-like. but there is already a sms wishlist topic around. thanks for creating a sms section though. I guess it includes gamegear games too, since a lot are equivalent.

here's one. when you reload a gun using magazines, even if the one you remove is not empty yet, you won't have to worry of what it will become. the magazines in your backpack are always full (except the last one). even if you fire only one bullet from every magazine, a magic elf will always transvase bullets between magazines to ensure they're as full as possible.

summary : upthorn tested all the open source emulators, but only Meka gave good emulations results (read : many games were badly emulated on Dega and gens+). then the author of Meka (Bock) came (invited by xebra if my memory is good) and proposed to include rerecording (since savestates are already good at the job). satisfied by this response, upthorn trusted Bock, and denied any proposition to take the job since, because someone was already "doing" it. this was 9 months ago. the long story. upthorn, if you would change your mind, you would be very welcome ;) until then, we will stick with DrSMS. it's poor but it's there.

yeah ! neat, it has potential, as expected. of course, OgreSlayeR meant that you should patch the "Wonder Boy 3 - The Dragon's Trap (UE) [!]" rom, not wb2 (check xebra's topic about a run on this game). it does not look perfect but but it's a pretty good job, it totally ignores the annoying momentum human players get on this game and blazes through enemies at a pretty decent speed.

I support you in this operation. I totally suck at the game though, so I will be of no technical help, just the usual "yeah !" reply. I just want to see the game beaten soooooooo bad.

the bomberman series, especially the later SNES versions (super bomberman 5 (jp) anyone ?) are playable 2 versus on the same console/emulator (don't know if the 5 players mode works online though), and are very funny. easy to find and to play, and perfect for either short and long sessions.

a good place to do researches would be http://www.vgmuseum.com/ where screenshots of lots of games are available.

with a ps3, it's perfectly legal. as for, how to upload your own ps1 isos into your psp, it requires a custom firmware, created by some guy called Dark_alex. I said enough I believe.

the possibility for the character to go at extreme speeds, needing inhuman reflexes and control. a speedrun would have to be played carefully, but a TAS would show godly control. think about sonic.

you can buy ISOs online with a PS3 (when it's out :x ). there are tools to convert your own ISOs into the appropriate format. as for speed issues, I don't know for N64, but I had no problem with SNES emulation, but yeah it's mostly homebrews, and downgrading is illegal to begin with ; but we all know that emulation is, roms are...

fantastic coming-back, Huffers. nice to see that all that time spent to study the game wasn't for nothing. even if you don't consider that it beats the human world records (which I don't care), the speed achieved is still very impressive. the lakitu trick to skip laps made me want to watch less of it, and more of the speed racing, but I guess that's the price to pay to beat the times.

there is a GBA emu for the PSP, so I don't see why a DS would be needed. even the N64 games can be played, and recently Sony upgraded the latest firmware to let their portable console PS1 retro-compatible.

I hope I speak for the silent majority. this is ridiculous. it's just some description about some 20 years old game. most people don't care if the guy is called zelda or whatever (intended pun). there shouldn't be such a thread at the first place. I thought adults wouldn't post things like that.

this is a tool assisted speedrun. it's merely a file that stores the player's input. this file was recorded with special emulators, allowing to unlimited undo and frame by frame playing. the divx is just the file, hence the total of the inputs, played at normal speed. so, no, there is no cheat involving, any human with perfect reflexes could do this, but here players are assisted by tools. the goal of this site is not to establish human world records, but computer assisted art. hope it clears things up. the long answer : http://tasvideos.org/WhyAndHow.html
