The bulk of the optimization in this run seems to be entirely based on a trick that exploits how god-awful the movement physics are. Figuring this out required a fair amount of outside-the-box thinking: The trick is rapid-firing left or right in order to reach max speed/turn around faster, which would in fact save a substantial amount of time over the course of the run. A full minute seems high to me, but I'm sure I'll be proven wrong about that whenever someone actually feels like improving this. It sounds like something that could be easily stumbled upon, but really, it seems like multiple people missed it, starting with Rolanmen1's old WIP, continuing into the site-only Speed TAS Competition where only TASeditor picked up on it out of a crowd of entrants that included Tompa and MESHUGGAH, and up to today where DrD2k9 completed a full run without figuring it out and I completely missed it as well while knowing full well there was a improvement based on the movement physics. You could say that the speed TASing aspect was what caused them to miss it... But, well, it's a very simplistic game and the 2 hour time limit was pretty generous in terms of giving time to research and TAS. One person still figured it out, yes, but that leaves 7 others in that competition alone. As for there being a known faster record: To further expand on that, it's one game out of three. If it were being submitted by itself, that would warrant an easy rejection, but this is a different category altogether, where almost 90% of the run is two other games that are as fast as I can find. Sure, they can be improved, but the method of doing so is overly complicated and optimizing it would probably take weeks longer than this run took to make. "Rapid-fire L or R" sounds easy, yeah, but from my experimenting with it, it's horribly inconsistent, and it needs to be applied in a huge number of places, even at times when you're unable to move. "But it would've been found with the proper research!" The research... That exists... In the Sites category of the forums, from a thread that hasn't had a post in 2 years with a title that doesn't imply anything about the actual game itself. Even if you wrangled the forum's Search function into working, which I wouldn't expect someone brand new to the site to be able to do, you likely still wouldn't figure out that the Speed TAS thread contains the only real information on Bible Adventures TASing. I'm pretty sure the only reason anyone even remembered that thread existed in the first place was because it was brought up by Spikestuff, who participated in the competition. Take this like my first Umihara Kawase Shun run, where there were indeed known improvements and faster times out there that were somewhere I and others had no logical way of finding. Even the person who brought it up said it was a OneDrive link that was only shared on Twitter to a small group of people primarily consisting of non-TASVideos members. Yes, this is different in that the information is on the site itself, but there's no logical way of knowing that the information is in fact there without doing some counter-intuitive digging. So, honestly? I think I'll let my decision stand.

Safe to accept for now, then. Got it. Thanks for reaffirming my decision.

Quick question for hyper: why did you not use FFM? Was it a stylistic choice because you prefer to start from clean RAM? Or was FFM discovered after you had started the TAS? (Or maybe it was both?)
The answer to that is in the video with comments. If he used FFM, it would have to start from a savestate with verification video. Or it would have to start from playing through Grunty's Lair on a pre-saved SRAM, then trigger the glitch, and that would be the first few minutes of the TAS. You can't start TASs from a savestate here.
1. FFM was discovered after the TAS was started. 2. FFM doesn't save nearly as much time in 100% as it does in any%. 3. You absolutely can start TASes from SRAM here as long as you provide a verification movie that sets up the exact conditions you'll be using for the run. If no verification movie is provided, then we cannot judge the run, let alone verify that it is legitimate. 4. FFM in 100% would kill a lot of the entertainment value, I think. Part of the appeal of 100% is the actual collection of items and moves, not just having all the moves available from the start of the game and not having to bother with them. It wouldn't feel like a 100% to me.

Yeah, keep it going without me. Been too busy with real life, Gunstar, and judging for any other projects right now.

We wouldn't be able to accept it anyway until the emulation improvements are merged into BizHawk proper. Custom builds are a no-go for publication as it's much harder to verify authenticity using an emulator build we know nothing about.

Dunno if this was known or not but RTA runners have recently found a way to skip most of the endgame boss rush.

This submission: My low-effort test attempt: I'll keep testing, but this doesn't bode well for the rest of the submission. Even just watching the encode, I can see numerous moments where things could be done a few frames faster.

No need to. I can't see that being allowed at the moment. It sounds like a nightmare of potential desyncs.

Do it before the run. I.E, have the cartridge loaded before you start the run, and leave it there until the run finishes. It's stable that way, unlike changing settings mid-run.

Plus, we can't actually judge the run without a verification file, as we would have no way of knowing the exact setup used for the run, and thus we wouldn't actually be able to play the submission, and thus we would reject the run because we can't verify it, and because it doesn't follow the site rules. And keep in mind this strictly has to be a movie starting from power-on that achieves the exact state that the submission starts in. Providing just a save file is not enough, as we would not be able to conclusively prove that the save file is legitimate and unmodified.

It's probably an acceptable category, though I wouldn't count it as an any% run. Only way to find out if it's acceptable here is to finish it and submit it and see what the audience thinks, though. Please though for the love of God make and provide a verification movie that sets up this glitch so we don't have another DKR shitstorm on our hands.

Since it's the vanilla contest, there won't be any groundbreaking new gimmicks within the levels themselves, just new presentations of old gimmicks.
This is exactly how I'm seeing it from the videos presented. I'm not really impressed. If we're going to accept a new SMW hack on the site, it has to be significantly different from the other hacks and especially from SMW itself. If it just takes pure vanilla mechanics and redesigns levels around them, that doesn't feel like enough. It would've been enough before we had Super Demo World or TSRP2 or Kaizo 3, but at this point we're going to need more substantial differences. Changes in physics, ASM hacking, as much custom stuff as possible... Something more along the lines of the VIP series or Brutal Mario. We may obsolete another hack with this one, however, if enough people argue (and we agree) that it does something better than one of the published runs, but that's going to be a real tough sell.

Like I said on Discord, the differences between Saturn's TAS and this one could easily be chalked up to emulation differences. Looking back, he made his TAS on a completely deprecated and unacceptable version of Snes9x due to how inaccurate and garbage it is (I thought it was at least 1.51, but nope, 1.43). No matter what happens in terms of losses compared to Saturn, his run as a whole is still 100% invalid in our eyes, enough so that comparisons probably wouldn't even be made at all during the judgement process. If you have to sacrifice a few frames for something, it's not a problem at all.

Okay, so what are these gimmicks? What specifically stands out? We need specific examples, not one single vague piece of information.

What was the specific Dolphin version used? Was it the 5.0 release? Or was it one of the development builds, and if so which one?

Please correct me if I have mistaken. This period of time is used for voting, right?
In a way, yes. The 3-day grace period gives runs a chance to collect feedback before being able to be judged, which helps inform the Judges and ensures they're not making any hasty, biased decisions. Voting can still happen as long as a run is on the Workbench, though. Generally, long Wii/GC runs are unstable and require a lot of effort, so we're not exactly jumping at the chance to be able to judge them. It's much more efficient in the long run to take care of the easier submissions first.

What does this do differently from the other published SMW hacks? Apart from level design and graphics, obviously.
