According to Fractal Fusion, this is easily reproduced in real-time, unlike say, monopoly or King's Bounty. Given that information, it may be exploiting a timing glitch, but, it doesn't seem like TAS material if it can be reproduced in real-time with minimal effort.
He didn't say it was a good run, he just said we shouldn't judge it by the level of chess you see. It's a video game, not chess.

Definite yes vote, I've given this game a try for TASing but wasn't capable of pulling off the glitch, which makes this run all the more impressive to me. And Peffse: Whenever you hit a boss they start to flicker to indicate their invulnerability period, Robert hits them so quickly after they become vulnerable again that there is no period in which they do not flicker.

And I'd like to throw in my support of this TAS too. Good job Weatherton, I think you're making very many people very happy with this project.

How do I open the file with the ram addresses (.wch)? It's kinda messed up if I open it in notepad.
Open it with the memory watch function in DeSmuME itself.

someone should run duke nukem forever
Here's an interesting theoretical question. Is the world record for completing Duke Nukem Forever 0 seconds, or infinity seconds?
The world record for completing Duke Nukem Forever is still in progress, but so far it's taken them since 1997. If you mean completing as in playing... Well, it's true that every completion of the game has taken 0 seconds. It's also true that every completion of it has taken infinite seconds. Hm...

As far as I understood from a Half-Life TASing thread (same idea as here, basically) on SDA a while ago, that game contains either coordinates or coordinate displacements per frame, both of which would allow you to complete any level with an "exit point" point in exactly 2 frames: a start frame, and one to "warp" you to it.
All 3D games have variables for X, Y, and Z. Thus, that technique can be done in any game.
There is a great difference however between the movie files being plain input (which can only produce "genuine" movies) or consisting of the player's position per frame. The first would enable TASing as we know it, the latter would allow one to simply do with the coordinates whatever he wants. As much as you may be capable of altering the file, if the movie is input-based there is no way to move at over 9000 times the maximum speed (excluding glitches), but coordinate-based movie files easily allow this (heck, they allow traversing the map in 1 frame, and even further). In the end, if we want a way to check the legitimacy of movies that have been produced using a special rerecording version of the original game, this would both require the movies being playable in the original game (which limits our choices to games that have replay functionality) and the movie files being input-based (which limits our choices even further).

I really liked the concept but I found only Mario and Mega Man useful. Mega Man because he's the only one who actually hits enemies and Mario because he has actual jumping distance. Still, the physics are off so I tend to keep dying with Mario (leaping over the Piranha Plants in 4-1 is impossible in this game).

Heh, not my first TAS (Myst DS didnt get published though). And yeah, the first levels are quite boring, but later levels present much more of a challenge, so this might just make an interesting run. So far I haven't been able to find any glitches and considering it's a run'n'jump platformer it's not very likely I'll find any.

I'd say "doable in real-time" basically mean that it should be doable in real time. Thus, no slowdown, only savestates (which is basically like restarting real often). Honestly, I don't think this would make for very interesting runs, even though they might be useful to unassisted runners.

There's also the issue that pressing B for a single frame already results in a pretty high jump, making it look like I jump more than necessary. Now I'm at the first balloon-bit of the Toy Store*, which means there's about ten seconds of waiting I have to make entertaining. The one thing I hate about TASing... Ah well, I still did the first part of the Toy Store as fast as possible, because so far it seems everything is triggered by the camera's position, so probably the walking of the clown too (and you want it to start as soon as possible). *) For those of you not familiar with the game: the "balloon bit" consists of a wall too high to jump over. There's a clown walking around in front of it that releases balloons you can hang onto. You can use these to get over the wall, but the clown walks awfully slow, so it takes quite a while before a balloon gets close enough to the wall to jump on it. Also, balloons go up slower if you hang from them... Pretty darn hard to make entertaining and fast.

Frankly, the hitboxes are so incredibly odd that each jump you see IS done at either the first or last frame possible. Also, jumping is quite a bit slower than walking (about 25%) so I refrain from jumping as much as possible.

Here's the first level: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1020808200/spirou_01_4881.smv There is a small chance the "electric rope" can be done a few frames faster, so I've got to test that. Anyway, enjoy and please comment.

Search turned up nothing, so I thought I'd make a new topic. As far as I could find, there's never been a release for this game outside of Europe, but ah well. It does mean however, that the default language is French, and I'm in doubt as to whether I should change it to English. This takes approximately 300 frames (it's simply pressing down and start when it asks for the language, but it's a long animation) but the only text you see in the game is in between levels, and that's skipped as quickly as possible. Also, should I switch to hard difficulty? I have, so far, noticed no differences between medium and hard... Anyway, if anybody knows anything about this game, is working on their own run or just wants to see this done, I'd like to hear about it.

I've played this game enough to know this is sick fast. And the razorwind glitch was simply brilliant. Definitly a yes vote.

My TAS didn't get published. Bummer, but ah well. Better luck next time. Still, I'm glad I've submitted this. It stirred up more discussion than I had imagined and quite a few people seemed in favor of publishing. I'm very much aware that making this TAS isn't the greatest feat ever, but I made this for it's entertainment value (hence I didn't submit after I edited it to include the smiley). And the popularity of the game, at least for me, adds somewhat to that value. But I'll just continue working on my Layton TAS now... More puzzles, should be more impressive.

Just something I was wondering about. Considering there's plenty of programs capable of emulating Flash games out there (most of them called browsers), how hard could it be to make a Flash-running program with TASing tools? Most browser allow stuff like "play", "rewind" and "stop" already when you right-click the Flash object... I don't have the programming capabilities to extend this to "Frame Advance" and "Savestate" but hey, it should be possible, right?

Sorry about the submission text, it's my first one, preview didn't work and I'm getting the referrer stuff when I try to edit it (vanilla Firefox, though). Ah well.

Thought of something after all: Youtube Movie File I'll just go ahead and submit this, let me know what you think.

Nice! My only comment is that I think it would be nice to do something clever while entering the elevator code... I was thinking of trying to spell something but I don't think there's enough room. But something other than just entering it left to right top to bottom would reinforce that it's a tas and not just a fast tapping human ;)
I thought about that but couldn't think of anything... I'll try again though :P

Bumping an old thread but meh. I've done a run of this game too, and this is the result: Youtube Movie File So... should I submit this movie? It's 4018 frames long, which is 501 shorter than the one Comicalflop did. But as that one desyncs for me, it might just be the new version of DeSmuME causing the difference. Ah well.

Or TAS the story. You can only use the Blue Falcon there, no spaceflying possible. And if you're actually TASing the normal GP's, just use whatever you have unlocked, if it's faster to select (or build) that trough the menu than just racing the races with default vehicles.

Well normally it only moves you forward a teeny weeny subpixel or so, but here that might just be enough.
