I've been excited to see a Myst TAS since I first realized that it was released for TAS-able consoles. Unfortunately the PSX version doesn't run for me, and in the Saturn version the quicktime movies don't play sound for me. So I gave the DS version a shot. This port is universally panned. The graphics are lousy and too small. It apparently crashes frequently. Stylus control is finicky. Oh well. I still did a very rough run through in about 1:13, 1 second under the purported PC unassisted record. (Yay?) This is not frame optimized, nor route optimized (but both are pretty good). Also, it might be advantageous to enable "zip" mode, but from my earlier tests I did not notice any difference... I stop it at the "traditional" ending... there's an extra age afterwards as in realMyst, but who cares about that :P Meh, didn't want to spend a lot of time on this :) Enjoy! I found it to be as interesting as the SDA run. What specifically about it isn't optimal? (I might try doing a run) zip mode saves time only when you go to an area you have already visited. So, route wise, do you visit any previous areas? Hm.... if my calculations are correct, zip mode should save a little bit of time. Lemme test both. Currently 178 frames faster, and that's even with selecting zip mode.

I didn't always click on stuff as soon as possible. Route-wise, it may be faster to hit some of the marker switches on the way back to the dock instead of beforehand. Also keep in mind that to "finish" the game there's another whole section to complete :). Might want to wait for Saturn/PSX version to work (though then you have to control the cursor with the d pad -- you can set it pretty fast in the Saturn version at least, but it's still harder to optimize). I look forward to a faster version! edit: oh, and my version is 1:23, not 1:13. bloody arithmetic.

Ok, finished. 465 frames faster than your test. Should I post it here or submit?

Depends on how sure of yourself you are :)

Well, tech wise, I think the route is solid; I abused as many zip paths as possible (which is only two), I made every click as soon as possible, and I remember that alternate paths exist, but they use the same number of clicks. I also tested both of the cutscene skips that the SDA run uses, and those skips are exclusive to that PC version. Now whether anyone beyond you and me likes it, well. I dunno. Youtube Encode Movie File Interesting fact: The percentage of lag frames in the run is 88.78%.

Nice! My only comment is that I think it would be nice to do something clever while entering the elevator code... I was thinking of trying to spell something but I don't think there's enough room. But something other than just entering it left to right top to bottom would reinforce that it's a tas and not just a fast tapping human ;)

Bumping an old thread but meh. I've done a run of this game too, and this is the result: Youtube Movie File So... should I submit this movie? It's 4018 frames long, which is 501 shorter than the one Comicalflop did. But as that one desyncs for me, it might just be the new version of DeSmuME causing the difference. Ah well.

From the looks of it, it does seem the 501 frames comes from 1) using a new version of desmume and 2) not using skip mode, since I think it'll only save time given the slightly longer screen transitions in the older desmume. I wouldn't recommend submitting it; I had a lot of meh/cool feedback when I showed a big audience in IRC, and while a cool concept, I don't think it's entertaining enough to a large enough audience.

I say submit it, unless your fragile ego cannot bear the possibility of rejection :) I can guarantee it won't be accepted if you don't submit it
I would also like to point out that earlier I wrote:

And I still think that's true as long as it doesn't waste time.

I thought about that but couldn't think of anything... I'll try again though :P

Welll, I don't think it will tip the scales either way so don't kill yourself ;) But I think just doing them randomly would look better.

Thought of something after all: Youtube Movie File I'll just go ahead and submit this, let me know what you think.
