It just gives me a black screen. Do I have to switch to the Japanese BIOS or something since it's a Japanese game?

Every time I go to play a Genesis/Mega Drive game I have to set up the controls. I click save so I don't know why I have to keep doing this. Not sure if it happens with other consoles, just Genesis. None of the other emulators I use have this problem.
